This is with reference to your editorial Hurry for Foreign Universities in April II issue. The proposed legislation to import foreign universities to India only confesses that the Indian universities are nowhere near their foreign counterparts. There is no guarantee that by importing foreign universities we can create intellectual climate of Oxford, Cambridge and Harvard in India. There is no doubt that the foreign universities have ample funds to attract the students through their libraries, laboratories and new techniques for innovative teaching. But only the affluent can have access to such universities. Improvement of higher education cannot be achieved by expansion of universities but by upgrading each college, technical or non-technical with public and private participation. Indira Gopalan, Bangalore.

EDITORIA

CAN WE CREATE CLIMATE OF OXFORD?

Your eye-opening editorial In the Guise of Witch-Hunting (April I) reveals the fact that in India witchhunting is not merely dark part of history and is still happening today. It is reported that assaults are widespread in rural areas, where dozens of women die every year after being accused of witchcraft. Superstitions are deeply rooted in our society, and the belief in witchcraft is one of the worst forms of this. The practice of witch-hunting can be fought effectively only by under standing and exposing the links between this practice and its supporting structures. Neelu V. Dixit, Ahmedabad.

EXPLORE STRUCTURES SUPPORTING WITCH-HUNT

In this nuclear age, the young generation has disintegrated and become selfish and self-centred to care a hoot for the aged parents. They consider parents a liability and a parasite in their way of modern living. It is ridiculous on the part of the writer to project the image of the parents in poor light and degrade their self-respect. R. A. Bahadur, Faridabad.

A LOOK AT ARRANGED MARRIAGES

This is in response to the article , Do not burn your fingers... beautiful article highlighting all aspects and forms of marriage and courtship except the most commonly prevailing one forced arranged marriages. When a girl out of love or emotional insecurities chooses a partner to marry, then in most of the cases her decision is criticised and the guy is proved wrong if he is a bit less than perfect, because every ones eyes are on him. However in realistic Indian society most of the ideal marriages are arranged by the mature well-wishing parents. If we really go and ask the miserable daughters, they will tell us how they are surviving their pathetic marriages with their perfect man, their parents and society chose for them. A MISPLACED ADVICE?

RIGHT TO FOOD BILL FIRST

In the context of the editorial Right to Education (April II), I want to raise the issue of child labour. Anywhere you look 90 per cent of the teastalls have the poor boys delivering tea to the customers for a meagre salary of Rs 50 per day. Nearly 40 per cent of the labourers in cracker making factories are child labourers. How it is possible for state or central government to implement Right to Education until parents of these children and mostly orphan girls and 146

This refers to A Word for Visiting Parents April 2010, issue. I take strong exception to the unsolicited advice given by the writer (Snehlata Baliga) to the elder parents How to become comfortable without rocking the boat at your kids home elsewhere? The advice given by the writer is not so innocuous as has been projected to downgrade the elders and I believe the writer must have undergone such a situation in her time, the experience which she is using to malign the elders in a clever manner. There were times when the young generation would give due regards to the parents and understand their problems in old age. Even Sarvan Kumar was loyal to his blind parents and served them to his best ability. Womans Era June (Second) 2010
