A frigid wind was whipping across an ice and freezing his ears. He wrapped his head in the scarf, but the scarf was uncomfortable. Besides, the wool was itchy and the scarf kept on slipping. Chester had the idea. He would make the covering for his ears. He bent two pieces of wire so that they would fit over his ears. Then he joined the pieces of wire so that they would fit over his head. After he returned home, he asked his grandmother to sew pieces of fur over an outside of the earpieces and velvet over the insides. He adjusted the wires

so that each ear was covered with a fur piece. Later, Chester used the steel band instead of wire. A band could be adjusted so that the pieces of fur and velvet would fit over the ears.
