get breast cancer do not
have a family history of
the disease. Surprised?
On Friday, the conference hall
of Tidel Park played host to a dis-
cussion where more than 50
women techies educated them-
selves about breast cancer, one of
the deadliest and fast spreading
cancers in the world.
The lecture-cum-discussion on
‘Be Breast Cancer Aware’ was
jointly organised by U. S. Consul-
ate General, Chennai, eWIT (Em-
powering women in IT) and CAN
STOP.
“It is the duty of each and every
woman to be aware of the chang-
es in their breast.
"The early the disease is recog-

of treatment and recovery. Other-
wise, the cancer spreads to other
parts of the body with or without
any major symptoms,” said Dr.

Dear Jeevesh,
When you sell land anytime before 36
months it will attract short-term capital gains
tax. Since you have brought your land with in
the past 24 months, your gain (profit) will be
added to your annual income and then taxed as
applicable.
The gain is calculated as follows:
1. Full sale price
2. Less expenses
3. Less cost of acquisition
4. Less cost of improvement or development
during the 2 years.

■ AUM: Asset under Management – Is the cur-
rent value of funds that a mutual fund handles/
invests on behalf of its customers.
Example: If 1000 investors each invest Rs
1000 on Oct 1, 2008 then AUM = 1000*1000 =
1000000. But say on Oct 5 the value of each Rs
1000 grows to 1010, then AUM on Oct 5 will be
1000*1010=1010000.
■ NAV (Net Asset Value): It is the worth of
each unit of a mutual fund. For example, say
you buy 100 units of XYZ mutual fund for Rs. 10
each. Hence you have spent Rs. 1000. The AUM
will be 1000. But to run the mutual fund there
will be certain expenses and liabilities like tax
etc. Say it amounts to Rs. 80. Then the NAV is
calculated as follows –
(Value of assets – Sum of Expenses and liabil-
ities) divided by number of units.
Example:
NAV= (1000-80)/100=9.2. Assuming the value
of the assets (investments which the fund has
done) grows to 1400 and expenses rises to 140
then the NAV will be (1400-140)/100 = 12.6

A
t a time when Internet busi-
nesses are increasingly look-
ing for professionals in web
development, Revmakx, an
online firm started by three Chen-
nai-based final-year Engineering
students, has been having a suc-
cessful innings. The firm was start-
ed four years ago and today boasts
of over 50 loyal clients.
Revmakx, short for ‘Revving to
the maximum’, was started by Vi-
nodh David Vikram in 2004 to
plunge into the web development
market. He was later joined by Am-
rit Anandh and Yuvaraj Senthil
Nathan, two of his classmates from
Jaya Engineering college. The firm
offers services relating to logo de-
sign, website design, software de-
velopment and brochure design.
“We wanted to cash in on the
current trend towards web devel-
opment and we believed we could
make a difference. Our services are
innovative and custom-designed
to fit our clients,” says Vinodh.
“Our motto is ‘make a difference in
whatever we do’.”

ent websites to spread the word
around. “It was tough initially but
as the word spread we started get-
ting more clients, who brought in
some more. Then the path became
a lot smoother,” Amrit explains.
While Amrit dons the designer’s
cap, Yuvaraj and Vinodh are the
developers. Vinodh also manages
the projects and clients. Every cli-
ent’s project is discussed by the
three through intense brainstorm-
ing sessions and the package is
then executed only when they are
satisfied with their ideas. Current-
ly, Revmakx caters to clients from
around the globe, including the
US, UK and most of the European
countries.
“In the beginning, we used to get
just a project or two a month. We
then worked on our consistency
and quality of the project. Slowly,
we built up our reputation and
now we get a couple of big or a few
small projects on a monthly basis.
We have 50-plus major clients and
they keep bringing in more all the
time.
There’s no fixed number be-
cause we never say no to a project,”
Yuvaraj smiles.
Going ahead
These final-year students plan to
take up the venture full-time after
they complete their education next
year. They feel Revmakx has motiv-
ated them enough to continue it
full-time. “It’s been four years and
we’ve learnt so much from Rev-
makx. And it’s been unbelievable
fun. It’s still fun for us and we love
our job.” ■

two years ago, the producers of
the world’s longest running movie
franchise had announced that the
new generation Bond will be suited to
the tastes of the newer audiences.
None of the old world charm, oozing
suave, tastelessly wonderful innuendos,
sexist names (there have been a few over
the years from Honey Ryder in Dr. No to
Octopussy in Octopussy to Onatopp in
Goldeneye) were to remain. This is a fran-
chise that is reinventing itself.
Craig’s Bond is yet to find inner peace in
Quantum of Solace, easily the most ridicu-
lous title for a Bond movie in decades and
one that utterly lacks a punch. What the
title lacks, the sequence before the open-
ing credits and the ones that follow
make up for with aplomb.
The movie begins with Bond cap-
turing the mysterious Mr. White to
find out who blackmailed Vesper
Lynd to betray him of his casino
money. But what Bond does
not know is that the orga-
nisation – later revealed as
the complex, well-net-
worked ‘Quantum’ – has
people everywhere, in-
cluding within the MI6.

Mr. White goes utterly
wrong, Bond begins a
manhunt that takes him
from Italy to Haiti to the
heart of South Amer-

like Bond, has her own vendetta to settle
with Medrano. In the mix, Bond loses
some more loved ones, before settling his
score. In the end, the audience walks out
assured that there are more Quantum vs
Bond encounters coming.
In taking off where Casino Royale left,
QoS does a decent job but still falls short
of expectations because this is not the
Bond most of us are used to. Daniel
Craig’s Bond utterly lacks humour and
suave. The script does not allow that. Ulti-
mately, QoS suffers from bad writing and,
though comparisons are odious, I cannot
but remember how Timothy Dalton’s stint
as the superspy that was cut short because
of thoroughly uninspiring episodes. He
too went rogue in License to Kill for similar
reasons and made one of the worst Bond
movies ever. Mathieu Amalric as Greene is
the new age sophisticated villain. Olga Ku-
rylenko as Camille must be the Bond fe-
male sidekick with the least exposure ever,
both on screen and in screen time. Judi
Dench is fantastic as usual. The action se-
quences are good and edited far more ed-
gily – fast and furious but sometimes
blink-and-you-miss. Bond has had some
serious superspy competition at the box-
office this century from the American am-
nesiac Jason Bourne.
The Bourne series have surely set the
standards for unrelenting action sequenc-
es and somehow one hopes that Bond’s
future outings be much better. ■
