Ethernet communication port utilizing a network patch and/or crossover cable. This port is standard on PanelView Plus HMI 700 to 1500 and optional on 400 to 600.
Description of cables: A standard patch cable available from your local computer store or your ICT group. The cable will transmit data via a hub or switch box. A standard cross over cable available from your local computer store or your ICT group. The cable will transmit data directly to the HMI from your computer with out the use of a hub or switch. Correct IP addressing is critical for communication. The HMI, laptop and the network have to be set with in the same range in order for proper communication. Compact Flash Slot utilizing a standard compact flash card with a specific folder structure. This port is standard on all PanelView Plus HMIs. A USB Memory Stick can also be used with the USB port. Description of port:
This is a standard Compact flash card such as used in cameras and mp3 players. The *.MER file can be transferred to Compact Flash [CF] card via your windows explorer and a card reader into a specific folder structure to allow the PanelView Plus HMI to see the file. USB Memory sticks can also be loaded via the USB port with the same folder structure.
Folder structure: \Rockwell Software\RsViewME\Runtime
Configuring communication drivers in RSView Studio ME for the purpose of transferring a *.MER file to the HMI.
RSLINX Enterprise ver. 4.00.00 is different from RSLINX Classic ver. 2.50.00. RSLINX Enterprise is used with RSView Studio ME Software to communicate to the PanelView Plus HMI; RSLINX Classic is not used to communicate to the PanelView Plus HMI and
should be shutdown or you may have trouble loading a RS232 Driver.
In order for the user to be able to download to the PanelView Plus HMI using the Transfer Utility, you will need to set up a driver in the RSView Studio ME Software communication section. The most common way to communicate to a PanelView Plus HMI is to use the RS232 port, which is installed on all PanelView Plus HMI models 400 1500. This may prove to be the slowest way to download to the HMI, but it is the most consistent.

Explanation of IP addressing
What is an IP address? Internet Protocol Address; is information containing your network address and computer address. What is a Subnet Mask? Determines which part of the IP address is your network and which part is your computers address. What is a Gateway? This address is how computers on a specific network gains access to other networks, outside of their own. You will need the IP and Subnet Mask address, but it is not necessary to have the Gateway address.
Example:
IP address = 100.100.100.1 Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0 Gateway = 100.100.100.30 In the example above the Subnet Mask has determined that the 100.100.100 of your IP address is the network address and the 1 is the computer address. Note that the 255.255.255 is under the 100.100.100, designating the network part of the address. The 0 of the Subnet Mask is under the 1 of the IP address indicating the computers specific address. The Gateway address is usually given to the start up technician by the customer and will match the IP network address of the system.
25
When setting your IP address: Make sure that the IP numbers that are over the Subnet mask 255 numbers are all matching for the Computer, RSLinx and the PanelView Plus HMI. The last section can vary from 0 to 254; this is the unique address of the computer on the network. Example: IP address = 100.100.100.1 Subnet Mask = 255.255.255.0
The same principle is used in addressing a house. If you live at 22 Internet Drive, Louisville, KY. 40299 and there are other houses at 23, 24, 25 and so on, all of you share the same part of the address as in Internet Drive, Louisville, KY. 40299, but you have your own unique address setting your house apart from the rest on that street, in that city, in that state, under that zip code. 100.100.100.1 Is computer #1 at the network address 100.100.100. The subnet mask uses the 255.255.255.0 to determine that all computers on this network will communicate to each other with the same network portion of the address under the 255.255.255 and the 0 is open to any number from 0 to 254. Your PLC would have an IP address of Your HMI would have an IP address of Your laptop would have an IP address of All would have a Gateway of The Gateway could have an IP address of 100.100.100.1 100.100.100.2 100.100.100.10 255.255.255.0 100.100.100.50
