UCC Happenings
EIM Basic Workshop A 3-hour Ethics and Integrity in Ministry (EIM) Basic Workshop on child sexual abuse (formerly titled Protecting Gods Children), will be held on Monday, February 13, from 6-9pm, at the UCC. All are required to complete a one-time Application for Ministry prior to attending the workshop. Please RSVP for this workshop by visiting our website at utcatholic.org/eim-workshop/ or by contacting Daniel Gonzalez. Registration opens today (January 15) and will close on February 5. Please do not bring children to an EIM workshop. Also be aware that parking will be limited. Volunteer at the UCC The UCC is in need of 2-4 student volunteers to work the front desk during the evenings. There will be 2 shifts, 5p-7p and 7p9p. Duties include answering phone calls, taking messages, and greeting visitors. This will also be a great opportunity to get some studying done. Texas Catholic Pro-Life Day

Join us for the annual Texas Catholic Pro-Life Day on Saturday, January 28! This state-wide pro-life event begins with a prayer vigil at 7am (meet at San Jose Parish, 2435 Oak Crest in Austin) and the Rosary for Life at 9:45am followed by the pro-life Mass celebrated by Bishop Joe Vasquez at San Jose. The Texas Rally for Life begins with a march to the south steps of the Capitol starting at 1pm. After the rally, Catholic Longhorns For Life (CLFL) will host the Party for Life at the University Catholic Center. A Brief History of the Paulist Fathers From our very beginnings, the Paulist Fathers have been different. The Paulist Fathers were founded in 1858 by Fr. Isaac Hecker and four other priests, each a convert to Catholicism. Father Hecker was an intellectual and idealist - a friend of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He spent many years searching for a spiritual home before discovering it in the Catholic Church. Hecker firmly believed that Americas democratic ideals and respect for individual rights and freedom created the perfect atmosphere in which the Church could grow and thrive. Pop Pius IX approved Heckers plans to establish a congregation of priests, and in the spring of 1858, Archbishop Hughes accepted Hecker and his confreres into the New York archdiocese, giving them a parish on 59th Street for their headquarters (close to where our mother church is located today). The Paulists were the first native Catholic community of priests founded in North America. Father Heckers vision was to establish the Catholic Church as a major influence in the lives and values of people through the continent. With boundless energy, Hecker traveled thousands of miles, criss-crossing the country to spread the Gospel to largely non-Catholic audiences. He died of leukemia in 1888, but the seeds he planted - a uniquely American, vibrant, and optimistic missionary community of priests - has grown into the Paulist community that you are a part of today.
