Chapter Eight

June 23, 2003 Sunnydale

Angels long, thin sword deflected Spikes blow. The younger vampire howled at him wordlessly. Step aside, Angelus, he roared. Drus mine. I dont have to kill you like Im gonna kill the others. You were one of us once, you could be again. Angel gripped the sword tight. Never, Spike, he growled, his demonic features frowning in the firelight. Suit yourself, Spike spat. Boys! A pair of Fyral demons, tall and broad shouldered, each sporting long rams horns, came up behind Spike. Tear him into little pieces, Spike instructed them. Make sure you separate the head from the body. They grunted in response and moved in toward Angel, who shifted his stance and tried to keep them both in front of him. Spike dashed off toward Druscilla. Buffy threw her spent water pistols to the ground and drew a bottle of holy water in one hand and a stake in the other. She was already surrounded by a ring of ash from the vampires she had slain, and many had seen the wisdom in avoiding the Slayer. But a few of the braver amongst them shifted course and made for her. Buffy swept underneath the outstretched arms of one and tripped a second; the third she staked, flinching as he exploded on her, showering her with dust. She dropped down and rolled, her thumb unstoppering the holy water, and ended up on top of the vampire she had tripped; she doused his chest with the divine water. Smoke spiraled up, and Buffy rolled off him as he clutched at his chest ineffectually. The water ate through to his heart, puncturing a large hole in the organ; once it did so, the vampire turned to ash. The third vampire grabbed at her, nails raking across her injured shoulder. Buffy snarled in pain and jabbed upward with the stake; she pinned the vampires wrist to his chest. Thats gotta hurt, she admitted, drawing her machete and slicing his head off. Faith, not far off, dodged the superheated stream of breath that issued from the Kathol demon; a vampire coming up behind her was not so fortunate, and he found himself briefly engulfed in flame before he burst. Faith danced behind the Kathol and drove another stake into him, hoping to hit something vital this time; but like her other attacks, the wood merely went up in flames as soon as it penetrated his skin. Pain in the ass demon, she groused silently, rolling away from another deadly exhale, leading the demon to turn toward the advancing vampires. A number of them caught on fire, cursing and screaming. Those that werent instantly incinerated fell to the ground to attempt to roll the flames out. Geoff and Karina had opted to make a stand over Simons corpse. The man had been burned almost beyond being recognizably human. Karinas water pistols were dry, and she didnt have time to refill them. She wielded a stake with considerable prowess, stabbing a slender vampire and whirling away from another one. Geoff fired the blessed water from his rifle only sparingly; he still had some left, and he used it to good effect, aiming at faces and scattering a knot of vampires who gathered nearby. Those that didnt fall to the ground clawing at their faces ran off, presumably to find easier pickings. Bravo team, talk to me.

Im in trouble, John replied. He didnt exaggerate; a Kaliff demon and half a dozen vampires had him ringed, and his hydro gun was empty. Peter? Geoff wondered. No response. He went down a minute ago, John answered. He was fighting this big bald vampire, and-- Suddenly John grunted, and Geoff looked over where hed last seen the man long enough to catch the Kaliff demon impale the Hunter on a long knife. John gripped the demons wrist and stabbed hard with the stake he held, piercing the demons throat and killing him. They fell in a heap. Johns down, Geoff relayed to Karina. She nodded grimly and lashed out with a stake; her opponent danced back. Willow and Daisy stayed within the protective circle they had hastily drawn when they had first spotted the vampires. Anything even remotely demonic wouldnt be able to get at them. Willow had used her water pistol with care, but it had nearly run out. Daisy continually muttered a protection spell as she watched the battle rage around them. A vampire separated himself from the crowd, seeing the two women alone, assuming they were easy prey. He came at them full tilt and smashed into an invisible barrier; momentarily stunned, he didnt even raise his hands when Willow spurted the last of her holy water at him. His face spilt open and he fell to the ground, clawing at his seared skin. There are so many of them! Daisy called out over the din. Theyre not my main worry, Willow replied, tossing away her plastic pistol and drawing her stake. Payne is. Xander watched Giles back as the Englishman tried to find a way to penetrate Paynes barrier. The younger man had attached to his bandoleer several spare cartridges of holy water for his super soaker. He still had three left, and the water gun was so powerful he was actually able to hold the vampires at a decent distance. His mouth dropped, however, as a Polgara demon stepped up from between two vampires, brandishing his arm spikes. Giles! Xander called out. Very busy right now, came the clipped reply. Bad guy who laughs at water comin this way, Xander reported. Looks really, really mean. Giles spared the briefest of glances. Its a Polgara demon. They are really mean. Great, Xander muttered. How do I kill it? Giles shook his head. Tuman mallari nema neh konar, he chanted. A language the living still use, Giles, Xander entreated as the Polgara advanced. Giles nodded. Of course. Ive punched a hole in Paynes barrier. I suggest we move. The two of them headed straight for the Hellmouth.

Oz sniffed at Jordis inert form, trying to rouse his cousin. This is bizarre, he realized. I can think and feel everything I normally feel, but Im a wolf. The spell worked, I know it. He pawed at Jordi and rolled his cousin over, licking at the young boys vulpine face. If I just had fingers I could check for a pulse. Nearby Payne and Druscilla were locked in a battle of wills. Jordi had shattered the circle of protection that Payne had set up around Druscilla, and the second he had done that the

vampire had leapt into motion. Shed hit Jordi with some kind of spell -- hopefully not fatal, Oz prayed -- and had thrown herself at Payne, heedless of the fact that Oz had sunk his teeth into her leg. Payne had commanded him to continue to attack her, and Oz had been compelled to obey. But when he saw that Jordis body made no movement whatsoever, he had broken free of Paynes hoarsely hollered instructions and run to his cousins side. Oz checked around for any potential threats that might be making their way toward him, but so far something seemed to be stopping to investigate them. He smelled Xander and Giles moving this way quickly, and turned his attention for the moment to Druscilla and Payne. I said sleep, Payne hissed at the vampire. No no, dearie. Once I knew that was your little trick, I prepared for you. Your voice wont work on me. The two circled one another warily, until Xander pulled up short and raised the super-soaker. Tell Spike to call it off, everybody, everything, now, or I swear Ill kill you, Xander threatened. Payne glanced at him, then looked at Giles. Rupert, she spoke. Giles turned toward her and clocked her, slugging her across the jaw and knocking her over. You greedy woman. Why take control of the werewolves? Payne rubbed her jaw, glaring at Giles. It didnt work anyway. I-- she pointed behind him. Look out! Giles turned to see the Polgara raise up a long spike and start to swing at him. Deus immolare! Payne cried out, one long arm outstretched toward the demon, who burst into a brilliant white flame. Giles blinked at the glare. What spell was that? he wondered. Fire of the gods? Payne nodded. Holy fire. And youre welcome. Lower the gun, sweetie, Druscilla coaxed Xander, her wide brown eyes drinking his in. You dont want to hurt me, do you? Of course not. I-- she stopped talking. Spike! The pale-haired vampire had found the hole in Paynes shield that Giles had created and came barreling toward the love of his life. You lot clear away from her, hear me? Get back! He pushed past Giles and knocked Xander over, sliding into Druscilla and gathering her up in his arms. Dru! Youre safe, baby. Its all okay now, he said, kissing her deeply. Spike, call this off now, Giles beseeched him. Youve got Druscilla back. We wont even try and stop you. Just take her -- and the rest of your army -- and go. Spike turned to him, his arms still locked around Druscilla. You know what, mate? I dont think so. Im tired of you lot mucking in my life. I know weve been doin this whole live and let live deal for a few years now, but I think its high time to forget that. Tonight, Ive got the chance to kill all you sods. So tonight, its live and let die. At Ozs feet, Jordi stirred. Oz nuzzled him, and the younger werewolf rolled to his feet, shaking his head. You dont wanna do this, Spike, Xander warned, climbing back to his feet. Two really pissed off Slayers, remember? Spike smiled, showing off his long fangs. So where are they, little pansy man? Right here, asshole, Faith spat, drop kicking Spike from behind and sending him sprawling. Druscilla fell to the ground, skidding in the dirt, and Spike rolled into a ball and came up ready to fight, fists raised. Ive been itchin for a piece of you all week, Spike hissed at Faith. Youre supposed to be miss bad ass Slayer, arent you? He clapped his hands together. This ought to be a ball.

You wanna up the stakes a little? Faith asked, raising an eyebrow. Spike nodded hungrily. Im game, Slayer. Lets have at it. No vampire has ever killed three Slayers before. Divine flame time? Giles murmured to Payne. She shook her head. Only works on pure demons. And you wont be the first, Faith told him. She pointed a hand at Xander. You stay outta this, Xander. This is between me and asshole. He coulda got the girl and bugged, but no, he wants to play tough guy with us. Thats right, Spike agreed, leering at her. Think youre the only one whos got some stones around here? He raised an eyebrow. Come on, Slayer, show me what youre made of. He gestured for her to come at him. I guarantee I can take it. Faith flashed him an evil smile. Wanna bet? She feinted to his left, nodding as he set his defense, anticipating her approach. Then the dark Slayer turned suddenly, pivoting on her right foot, and threw herself in the air, arms outstretched, one of them holding a sharp stake. Spike tensed, ready to throw her off to the side and follow after her. But her leap took her past Spike by several feet. She landed on top of Druscilla, rolled the female vampire over, and plunged the stake into her heart. Druscilla screamed in pain, a keening, final wail of despair, and exploded into dust. Spike stood mute, unable to say or do anything. Faith looked up at him and saw the look of shock in his eyes, the sadness and loss there, a pain so deep she knew at once she had never felt anything remotely like it. Nor the rage that quickly replaced it as Spikes yellow eyes bored into her.

*
Valeria whirled around, staggered by the blow the Fyral demon gave her. Angel had dispatched his pair earlier, but apparently Spike had brought several of the mentally slow but physically tough demons with him. Valeria could only barely hold her own against another vampire; she was completely outclassed by a Fyral, and she knew it. One huge beefy hand grabbed her shoulder and forced her to her knees. She tried to pry the fingers loose, to no avail. Hey! Buffy spat. Big, dumb, and ugly! Pick on someone your own size! She leapt up over Valeria and landed a hard kick to the demons face. Long sharp teeth flew from its mouth with the impact, and the Fyral released his grip on Valeria, turning to face the Slayer. Buffy dropped her stake and jumped high; she grabbed the Fyral demons long horns, one in each hand, and twisted, her body reacting instinctively, calling upon the gymnastics training of her youth. She flipped up over the demons head, snapping its neck, and somersaulted gracefully to her feet, checking to see if any other attackers loitered nearby. Youre really quite a fighter, Valeria commented. And youre really not, Buffy replied. No offense, but make sure Angel shows you the ropes in L.A., okay? Valeria nodded, surprised. A moment later Angel approached them, blood oozing from a cut above his eye. You okay? he asked them both. Both women nodded. Angel rubbed at the cut with his thumb. I think we have this area cleared out, but-- A savage roar, hellish, filled with pain, carried to them. They turned to see Spike, his head thrown back, body bending backward, howling at the top of his lungs.

What the--? Buffy wondered. Angel felt the hair on his neck stand up. Dru. Somebody must have killed Dru. They shared a look. Now, Buffy said, taking off at a run. Angel and Valeria followed close behind. Payne saw them coming, from the opposite direction of the hole in the protection shield she had erected. She closed her eyes and lowered it, allowing them to come racing past its outer boundary and skidding to a halt ten feet from Spike. Fury seethed from him as he rounded on them, his yellow eyes glowing, fangs bared. Youre all gonna pay for this, he rasped. Drus life was worth more than any of yours! Spike, Angel spoke, look at the odds here before you do anything stupid. Quicker than the older vampire would have thought possible Spike lashed out, punching Angel across the jaw, knocking him from his feet. Buffy rushed him with a stake; he grabbed the Slayers wrist and sent her flying into Xander, sending them both sprawling. He twisted around and threw the stake at Faith; unprepared for such a move, she dodged too late, the wooden dagger imbedding itself in her abdomen. Spike made for Valeria, drawing a long knife from his pocket, when a loud growl made him stop and turn. Wickedly sharp claws raked across his torso, shredding his shirt and leaving deep gashes in his chest. Gaaah! he cried out, stepping back. Goddamn bloody werewolf! He buried the knife in Ozs shoulder; the wolf-man howled in pain, leaping back, and Spike surveyed the situation. You! he shouted at Payne, pointing at her. This is all your fault. You and that bloody spell! Your time is over, Spike, she told him. This is the last night the vampires can walk free on this Earth. After tonight, youre a hunted species. Spike ran toward her, but Giles stepped in front of her, holding up a large cross. Begone, Spike. Youve already lost Druscilla. Leave Sunnydale before one of the Slayers kills you. The blond vampire shook his head. You dont get it, he growled. Im already dead. My life means nothing now except to see you all die. He pointed at Giles. And I will do it. You and what army? Buffy queried, getting to her feet, pointing Xanders super-soaker at Spike. Yellow eyes grew wide as Buffy fired a long stream of water at him; Spike turned and wisely ran, the long trail of divine water splashing harmlessly on the ground, mixing Druscillas ashes with the dirt.

Simons dead, Geoff spoke into the phone. Simon Taltos. A pause. Thats right. And Peter Daube, and John Starkey. He slumped on the garbage can as he listened to the response. No, Karinas with me. Shes pretty banged up, but I think shell heal. In time. Geoff rubbed his throbbing forehead as the clipped British voice on the other end of the line issued instructions and asked more questions. No, Spike got away. Druscilla is dusted, though. He waited a moment more as the conversation wound down. I understand. Soon as Karinas healthy.

He hung up the phone. Is it bad? Giles asked him from a discreet distance. Im gonna be formally reprimanded. He looked over at the ex-Watcher. I think they were more worried about Karina, he admitted. Giles nodded. She might very well have become a Slayer tonight if Spikes aim had been a little better. Faithll be okay? Geoff wondered. Giles nodded. Its your turn for medical attention, he told the younger man. Come on, the Watchers Council will pay the bill. Geoff waved him off. Ill be fine, he assured Giles. That may be, but Ill only take the word of a medical professional, not a Hunter. Geoff frowned. Im a doctor. Not of medicine, Giles pointed out. Geoff relented. Fine. He allowed Giles to show him to the nurses station, where one of the women began taking down his information. Is the Council upset with him? Willow inquired, sipping on her tea. Giles scowled. Theyre more upset that Karina is hurt than that they lost three perfectly skilled operatives. Geoff will probably be drummed out of the service. Hell be in good company, then, Willow remarked, giving Giles a slight grin. He nodded, removing his glasses. Thank you, Willow. I think. She patted his arm. How is it that you and Oz -- and Jordi, for that matter -- communicated what was going on after the demonic forces withdrew? Willow shrugged, sipping on the hot tea again. He cant speak, but hes Oz. Oz doesnt use a lotta words when hes human, either. Its not really all that different. She shook her head. I never noticed how cute his furry little ears are, the way they-- She stopped as she noticed Giles frowning down at her. Sorry, she mumbled. But hey -- the spell worked. Jordi and Oz are sentient now. Along with hundreds -- or thousands -- of other people all over the world. Giles shook his head. I cant believe she tried to take control of them. Well have a talk about that in the morning, Willow stated. I dont want any woman having control over my man except me. Giles laid a hand on her shoulder lightly. I appreciate you staying here with me, Willow. Each group gets a Wicca, remember? she told him. Besides, its not like I can really go home to my husband or anything. He and Jordi are out testing the limits of this new control thing they have going on. That pretty much leaves me open to help you out in any case. She looked up at Giles with tired green eyes. Im glad Im here too. Yes, well, that makes two of us, Giles nodded. Im going to go check on Faith. Ill look in on Buffy, Willow offered. Giles nodded and headed for Faiths room. She greeted him with a surly gaze. I trust youll be alright? Giles asked. Faith glared up at him. I hate hospitals, she complained. Last time I went to one I stayed two years. That wont happen this time, I assure you, Giles confirmed. How is your stomach?

Hurts like hell, Faith allowed. Doc says I wont be eating anything solid for a while. Giles took a seat. Faith, I dont have to tell you that you fought extraordinarily bravely this evening. Your presence on the battlefield likely made the difference between some of us being here tonight and some of us being in the morgue. Faith shrugged, unused to kind words directed at her. And you killed Druscilla. No mean feat. That will make Spike desperate and unpredictable. But it will also unbalance him and force him to be rash. Giles gave her a kind look. You may have made our job here a whole lot easier. Faith looked away. Killins what I do. Giles leaned forward. There is more to it than that, you know, he spoke softly. More to what? Faith wondered, frowning. Being a Slayer, he continued. Faith snickered. I know. Ive been doin it for -- If youre going to continue to stay in Sunnydale, and fill the role of a Slayer properly, youll need a Watcher, he pointed out. She furrowed her brow. Buffy doesnt have a Watcher. Buffy doesnt need one any more, Giles admitted. Shes past that point, really. Faith moved to cross her arms and winced at the shooting pain in her midsection. G, I dont think its a good idea to go gettin some greenhorn from England and tryin to get me to walk the straight and narrow, yknow? She settled back on the bed. Not my style. I was thinking more a watcher who is familiar with your particular style, your history, who knows full well what hes getting into. Faith gazed at him through narrow eyes. She caught on, and she blinked. No shit. Really? You would? If youd have me, Giles spoke. Faith nodded, a shy smile slowly coming to her face. Yeah.

Rupert certainly can pack a mean punch when he wants to, Payne mumbled, holding a damp washcloth filled with ice cubes over her jaw. Rupert did that to you? Joyce asked, a flash of mean satisfaction coursing through her. Payne nodded, working her jaw. Yup. Pretty good right hook for a librarian. Might have had something to do with you betraying us, Angel reminded her. That tends to make people angry. People get angry, they hit harder. Joyce stared at Payne. Betrayal? It wasnt betrayal. Not in the strictest sense, anyway. She frowned in pain as she moved the icepack. Maybe we should ask Oz and Willow about it, Angel rejoined. Or Jordi. Payne? Joyce pressed. She altered the spell so that the werewolves would follow her orders, Valeria spoke up, placing a hand on Angels shoulder. He glanced up at her but allowed her to leave it there. Theyre still aware of what they are doing, Payne defended herself. Its not like I lied about it. I promised to make them sentient and I did. You just conveniently forgot to tell us about the rest of what you were going to do, Angel told her.

Payne flashed angry eyes at him. You wouldnt have let me do it if I had disclosed that. And its not like we had the option of your approval. I had to do this spell. There wasnt a choice. Sooner or later, it had to happen. Why? Joyce asked. And why try to take control of the werewolves? Seems pretty selfish, Valeria added. Payne ignored her. First of all, youre going to need someone to organize them. Right now you have hundreds, or maybe thousands, of people all over the world waking up or going to work or what have you, and theyve all been hit with the realization that when the sun goes down -- and for some of them it already has -- theyre going to turn into large furry vulpine creatures and run around and hunt things. And theyll remember all the times theyve done it before, and all the animals theyve eaten, and the people theyve killed, and everything. Everything theyve ever done as werewolves. So you have that to deal with. Theyll be confused, scared, theyll wonder why it happened to them, and how. And unless someone can connect with them, give them some answers, who knows what will happen? Theyll go nuts trying to make sense of it. Not all of them, Angel volleyed. No, Payne admitted, not all. Some will be like Oz and adapt to who and what they are. And some will revel in the newfound power. But the majority of them will just be confused and scared. Think of the first time you woke up as a vampire. Was someone there to explain it to you? Did you have a guide? Darla, Angel provided. And this Darla -- she answered all of your questions? He nodded. See? And the werewolves will need this. And now because the spell went wrong, they wont have it. And who knows how many of them well lose because theyll have themselves put away for insanity, or theyll turn themselves in for the murders theyve just discovered theyve committed, or theyll take their own lives because they cant live with it? She shook her head. We cant afford to lose many of them. And now that they can control themselves, its not likely well be adding to their number. What makes you think that? Valeria queried. Would you willingly make anyone a vampire? Payne wondered. Of course not, Valeria replied hastily. And theyll feel the same way. They wont want to spread their curse to anyone else. And trust me, thats how most of them will see it. Payne set the wash cloth down and touched her jaw tenderly. You gave them their souls back, Joyce whispered. What? Payne asked. Like with Angel and Valeria, Joyce pointed out. You gave them awareness of what they are, and knowledge of what they can be. But you also gave them guilt for their actions. Just like these two. Theres no way we can get to all of them, Angel realized. Thats why I wanted to give myself control of them, Payne commented. Because we have to get to as many as we can as quickly as possible. And calling them all here would have been a great start. Because...? Valeria inquired. Payne placed her hands on the table. We need them. We need as many of them as we can get. She looked over at Angel. There is a war going on, a war between the forces of light

this entire document copyright writer42@postinbox.com

192

and the forces of darkness. Its been going on for centuries, ever since the demons first walked the earth. And itll keep going on until one side gets the upper hand for good. Thats why the Slayer was created, Angel spoke. To make sure the forces of darkness never got the upper hand. Payne nodded in agreement. Thats also why you were targeted by the forces of the light. He shook his head. What are you talking about? Angelus, she told him. The one with the Angels face. The vampire king no one could resist. Her dark eyes met his. You could have ruined it for all of us. They saw that. Thats why they gave the Kalderash that curse. Sure, for the Gypsies it was revenge, revenge for what you did to them. But the Kalderash, in their own way, were pawns for the forces of light -- fate, whatever you want to call it. You were taken from the darkness because with you at their head you could tip the balance once and for all. They all looked at him. Angel shifted uncomfortably. Like you almost did with Acathla, Payne added. Angel fidgeted uneasily. Hes not that person any more, Valeria told her. He was cured. Hes good now. He helps us more than anyone except Buffy. I know, Payne concurred. But even he can lose his soul again. She shifted her dark eyes to Valeria. You could too. That wont happen, Angel growled. To either of us. What does this have to do with the werewolves? Joyce queried. Payne sighed. Fate tried to create an army first, the werewolves. Intended to be the opposite of the vampires -- they even transmit their power the same way. But the werewolves didnt work. So they created the Slayer. And she worked out really well. So with all these werewolves all running around now, Joyce spoke quickly, fixed, so to speak, you wouldnt need the Slayer? Wed need at least one, Payne responded. What about Faith? Joyce pounced. Joyce, Angel spoke, but she held up a hand to quiet him. Faith has agreed to help us in the war against the vampires, Payne told her. Then how can I help you contact these werewolves? Joyce wondered.

How is he? Buffy asked. Hes -- theyre still sleeping. Sos Uncle Ken. Willow paused. I think in some ways this was harder for him than for anybody else. Xander downed his orange juice. Must be tough knowin your kids gonna be a werewolf the rest of his life. I dont care how laid back the Osbornes are, thats gotta be wiggin time. Like my mom, Buffy noted. How do you deal when you find out your little girl is the one chosen to stop evil in her time? Willow nodded. I just wonder if our kids will be... you know... Buffy looked at her through lowered eyebrows. Will, youre not --

this entire document copyright writer42@postinbox.com

193

No, Willow shook her had, though Buffy was surprised that the response lacked the sharpness that her own would have held. Will probably wants kids, eventually. I dont. But I just wonder, you know, if Ill be having these wolf babies instead of these cute pink little shrivelly things. Kinda doubt it, Will, Xander said, cutting his bacon, and Willow and Buffy looked at him. Well, think about it. I mean, if every werewolf who ever lived had wolfie kids, and werewolves have been around longer than the Slayer, and we know that Slayers have been around, what, three thousand years? He shook his head. That would be a lot of lyco... lycra.... wolf people running around. And there arent. How do we know there arent? Willow wondered. Weve been living on the Hellmouth, what, all our lives, Will? And weve met how many werewolves? Three? He ticked off fingers as he listed them. Oz. Jordi. And that Russian one. Veruca wasnt Russian, Willow corrected him. Whatever, Xander answered. You get my point. If people were giving birth to wolf cubs all over the place, someone would have noticed by now. Probably someone British, since they seem to care so much about weird stuff like that. Willow frowned, sipping on her tea. Youre right, I guess, she sighed. Why dont you ask Giles? Buffy suggested. He knows everything like that. Or if he doesnt, he can check with somebody. Yeah, Willow agreed listlessly. Will, whats wrong? Buffy inquired. Willow pouted. I dont like this whole Payne controlling the werewolves thing, thats all. I dont like anybody controlling them. They should be able to control themselves. Payne said that didnt work, Xander put in. Yeah, like I trust anything that comes out of her mouth, Willow sulked. Lying bitch. Me-ow, Buffy commented. I hate to admit it, but she did help us, Will. Who did? Kens basso voice rumbled from the doorway. Morning, Uncle Ken, Willow piped up, offering him a smile. Coffees ready, and theres hot water for tea. I didnt know what you wanted so I made bacon, eggs, and toast. And theres some fruit in the fridge. Ken blinked. Mind if I stay here more often? Willow chuckled. Its not like Aunt Maureen doesnt keep you guys fed. Ken laughed, padding barefoot into the kitchen. I have to get up before Jordi to get anything even remotely in its intended state. Speaking of, Xander ventured, how is the little man? Ken finished pouring his coffee and turned to answer Xander. It was the damnedest thing, he told them, rubbing his nose. I had drifted off in the car. I drove around for a while after I left you guys, but I couldnt sleep. I figured I better stay away from here and from Giles place, in case things got really ugly and that vampire who burned Buffys moms house down struck again. Thats another thing I owe him for, Buffy groused. So I drove out to this nice neighborhood north of town, just to sort of clear my head and think about all this. And I guess I fell asleep. He slurped his coffee. I woke up and I almost peed myself. Standing on the hood of the car was this pale grey wolf, his tail wagging back and forth. And hes got the greenest eyes, just lookin at me, lookin right at me. And somehow I just

knew who it was. I rolled down the window and got out of the car. And he came over to me and started licking my face. Ken shook his head. And you oughtta see your husband when hes like that, he told Willow. I have, she confirmed. Not like this, I bet, Ken told her. He was... well, he stood guard while Jordi and I... talked. Hes so big! They both are when theyre like that. He shook his head again. Unreal. The bedroom door opened, and Jordi toddled out, still rubbing sleepy eyes. Im hungry, he mumbled. Ken moved over to him and scooped him up in two long arms, holding his son up and kissing him on the cheek. How you doin there, tiger? Or guess I should call you wolf, huh? Jordis green eyes widened. Hey! I remember everything! Me and Oz found you in the car, and you were asleep. We barked at you, but you wouldnt wake up. Thats when Oz rammed up against the door. That woke you up. Ken rubbed Jordis red hair. Im glad you woke me up. I was happy to see you last night. Yeah? Jordi wondered. His father smiled. Yup. Can I have something to eat? Jordi asked. Im starved. Sure, champ. Ken set him down. Lets go see what Willow made for you. Hey, little guy, Buffy waved to him as they passed. Jordi scampered over to Buffy and gave her a hug, then returned to his fathers side, escorting him into the kitchen. I wish Oz would get up, Willow whispered. He had a gash in his shoulder, and-- Mornin, Oz called from the bedroom doorway. Willow leapt up and ran over to him, hugging him tightly. Are you okay? she murmured, kissing him on the cheek. He nodded, a smile on his face. Im fine. In fact, Id have to say right now, everythings perfect. Willow hugged him again. Make sure you guys clean up when you leave, Oz addressed the other four. Where are you going? Xander wondered. Oz closed the bedroom door. Buffy kicked Xander in the shin. Ow, what? he queried. It was a fair question. She inclined her head toward Jordi and Ken. Not in front of Jordi, she hissed quietly. You sound so much like your mother, Xander teased her. Buffy stared daggers at him.

Are you done? the Kathol demon asked. Spike turned on him, his demonic visage still showing. Not by a long shot, mate, he hissed. The Kathol looked around the abandoned warehouse. I dont think theres anything left to break, vampire. Spike resisted the urge to start beating on the warm-skinned demon. Why are you still here? You hired me for a week, the Kathol grunted. Only been four days.

Spike shook his head. Doesnt matter. The rest of them left. If I cant kill the Slayer and her little pals with a hundred, what can I do with just one demon? He kicked a dented metal chair away from him. I hate that bloody Slayer! The Kathol looked up at him, red eyes glowing slightly. You got anything else to burn? Spike swore. You can go. I dont have any more use for you. Doesnt matter how much crap I set on fire, Im never gonna kill them that way. All that did was piss them off more. The Kathol shrugged wide peach-colored shoulders. Suit yourself. But Im on retainer for three more days. Ill be here until then. He leaned over and picked up a piece of wood from one of the crates Spike had smashed and blew on it; the wood caught on fire and burned up all at once. The Kathol shrugged and reached for a bent metal folding chair; he picked that up and exhaled on it; the metal turned to slag, streaming down the side of the chair and dropping to the concrete floor, hissing where it landed. Some of it ran down his arm, dripping from his elbow. Doesnt that hurt? Spike wondered. If it did, would I do it? the Kathol asked, blowing on the top of the chair, smiling as the metal buckled and warped under the heat. Spike went back to venting his rage on the already broken inanimate objects remaining in the warehouse. He failed to notice, in his flailing about, that he and the Kathol had been joined by a third being. Vampire, the Kathol called out, his breath twisting the metal table into shapes that would have pleased Salvidor Dali. Bloody Christ, what? Spike snapped from the far side of the warehouse, beating a sawhorse to death with a large wrench, Somebody here, the Kathol remarked, frowning as the warped table collapsed under its own misshapen weight. Spike emerged from the wreckage. Who the bloody hell are you? he asked the greenskinned demon who stood in front of him. I am a Mohra demon, he told Spike. My name is not important. Ive been watching your little crusade with some interest. Spike advanced upon him. If you found it so sodding interesting, why didnt you help me get Druscilla back? The Mohra demon caught Spike, grasping his wrist and spinning him around, pinning it behind his back. Ive heard of you, William the Bloody. How you keep coming to Sunnydale, and how you keep losing to the Slayer. Youre a slow learner. Sod off, Spike hissed, trying to twist free. The Mohra twisted his arm into an even more uncomfortable position. You cant beat her, William. Its not your destiny. Even a mentally deficient vampire like you must realize that. Spike settled for growling in response as he tried to break free. Youve done a lot in the service of darkness, though most of it was for your own pleasure. And you might yet do some serious damage, if you stop this juvenile temper tantrum and listen to me. Spike held up a hand, signalling that he was ready to listen. The Mohra released him, and Spike rubbed the arm, glaring at the green-skinned demon. Youve already lost Druscilla. They have taken a warrior from our side. So now Im here to help you even that score. I want that dark haired Slayer, Spike growled. No matter what it takes!

And I can help you get her. But it wont be with another frontal assault. Your name in the underworld is worthless right now. You threw a host of vampires and demons up against the forces of the Slayer, and you have nothing to show for it but horrible losses. The Mohra folded his arms. No one would follow you now. Spike gestured to the Kathol, who was wandering around igniting various pieces of debris. He would. Hes an idiot, the Mohra spoke. Spike started to reply, then nodded his head. I know why youre helpin me. Im just a little fuzzy on the how. The Mohra nodded. There is someone who owes me a debt. I will have him work it off in payment to you. The Mohra turned to go. Meet us in the graveyard at three o clock. Bring your friend here. He might be good for a diversion. Spike folded his arms. And what will I owe you for all this? The Mohra smiled, a most unpleasant expression. Just keep being yourself, William. That will be payment enough. Spike continued to scowl as the demon left.

Faith clicked the TV set off, sighing. Never anything on in the afternoon. Or the morning, or the evening, or... A knock on her open door caught her attention. She opened her eyes and was surprised to see Buffy standing in the doorway. Aint this a kick, Faith commented, You comin to see me in the hospital. Buffy entered the room and sat down in a chair. Actually, I came to see you the last time you were in the hospital, too. After you tried to kill me, Faith reminded her. After you tried to kill Angel, Buffy shot back. We wanna go over who hurt who first, Faith, we can. But thats not why Im here. Faith exhaled, lying back on the pillows. Me neither, she admitted. Giles is downstairs signing you out right now, Buffy informed her. Im not so sure its a wonderful idea, but youre way too vulnerable here. Spikes liable to do something crazy tonight, and we need you where we can protect you. Faith started to say something, but stopped, shaking her head. What? Buffy prompted. Faith frowned slightly. I think the hardest part of this is gonna be not gettin mad at you, she spoke softly. Buffy blinked. What? Im stayin, B. Im not leaving town. Im gonna stay here and train with Giles. Buffy blinked again. What? she repeated. Faith ran a hand through her hair. Look, Im not tryin to steal your place or take over your gig or whatever here. Im just... She smoothed out the blanket. Im tired of running. Im tired of always movin around. She shrugged. I know I aint had such a good history here, but I wanna make it work. G offered to train me, and I dont think Im gonna get a better offer than that. Giles offered to train you? Buffy murmured.

Faith leaned forward, grimacing as she inadvertently put strain on her stomach, and sank back, gritting her teeth. Damn Spike, she hissed. Look, B. He only did it because he said theres nothin else for you to learn. He said theres nothin he could teach you any more. Faith chuckled. Theres a hell of a lot he can teach me. Buffy closed her eyes, trying not to let tears well up in them. I dont know what to say. I know this aint good news for you, B. I know that. But the last few days -- workin with you guys and everything, and stickin it to Spike -- it really clicked, you know? Like it made sense I was here. Like I fit or somethin. She looked out the window. Maybe it wont always be that way, but I aint had that before. I never had people and I never had a place I could call my own. Thats your own fault, Buffy told her. I know! Faith replied. I know its my fault. Jesus, B, I coulda asked G to tell ya, but I thought itd be better if I did. I thought maybe if it came from me youd understand. I understand, Buffy agreed. I understand you still wanna take my life away, just step in where I belong. Faith frowned. No I dont! B, theres gonna be a war here, real soon. I wanna be a part of it. You dont. Your little boyfriend Xander, he dont either. Angel? Nope. None of you guys want this. She cleared her throat. But B, I do. I want it so bad I can fuckin taste it. She gestured at Buffy. I dont wanna go patrollin together or whatever. You can still do whatever you do. I just wanna kill things, same as always. I just dont wanna do it alone any more. You can understand that. Buffy nodded. I wish I couldnt, but I can. These people kept me sane for a long time. She looked at Faith. Caring about people makes all the difference, Faith. And you know, it scares me to say this, but I think maybe you finally understand that. Thanks, B, Faith said softly. Oh, I still dont trust you as far as I could throw an elephant, Buffy informed her. But if Giles sees the good in you, Im ready to give it a shot. She stood up. Ill send Xander up with the wheelchair. Thanks, Faith replied. A few minutes later Xander entered the room, pushing a wheelchair. I think I can walk, Faith suggested. Xander shook his head. No can do. Hospital policy says you go out in a wheelchair. So, in ya go. Faith slid out of the bed and into the wheelchair; Xander only had to offer minimal assistance. He started pushing her out of the room when he leaned forward and whispered, See, I told you, Faith. Give these people a chance and theyll forgive you. She nodded, glancing up at him. Thanks, Xander. He frowned down at her. Now dont screw it up. Buffy will be watching your ass like a hawk and I have to live with her. So make sure you really mean it this time. Faith nodded. I do.

Sure you wont stay for lunch? Giles wondered.

Id love to, thanks, but Im sure Maureen wants me home as soon as possible. She was pretty understanding on the phone, but Ill bet she didnt get too much sleep last night herself. Ken extended a hand. Thanks again, Ms. Hollis, Mr. Giles. Rupert gave him a firm handshake. Any time, Ken, really. Glad I could help, Payne added. You take care, little guy, she aimed at Jordi, who slipped behind his dad at her words. Take care, Ken told them, offering a final wave, and he led Jordi out of the apartment. He seemed uncomfortable, Payne commented. Ken? Giles asked. No, the child. George? Jordi, Giles supplied. Yes, he was unusually quiet. That was us, Angel said, making his way down the stairs with Valeria. He sensed there were vampires around. But he knows you, Payne argued. He would know better than to attack you two. I wouldnt be so sure, Angel disagreed. You turned him into a full-time hunter. Whos to say if he can tell us apart, or even if he can control that side? He should be able to, Payne replied. Oz was able to control his actions last night. Oz is older, Angel reminded Payne. But Jordis been a werewolf longer, Giles spoke. Its been a part of him longer. So his senses may be more deeply attuned. Valeria pointed at Payne. She gave them the Slayers gift! Giles and Payne looked at the blonde vampire. Buffy calls it her Slayer sense, Angel explained. All Slayers have it -- the ability to detect vampires -- and now the werewolves have it too, even in their human form. He glanced at Valeria. Vampires call it the Slayers gift. I should think you would call it the Slayers curse, Giles ventured. Angel shrugged, preparing to answer, when a knock sounded on the door. Giles checked at the curtains; satisfied that no immediate danger awaited them outside, opened the door and welcomed Geoff and Karina inside. Everyones okay, then? Giles inquired. Well enough to fly back to England, Geoff answered. Madre de Dios, Karina breathed. Angelus. Geoff turned to her. Not Angelus. Angel. I told you, thats history. Hes on our side now. Geoff gestured to the young woman, her wrist in a cast and a thick Ace bandage around one knee and the opposite elbow. Karina Lopez, Angel. Angel, Karina Lopez. Shes a Slayerin-training candidate. Angel paused for the briefest of seconds before shaking her hand. Karinas brown eyes widened as she took him in. They never say how beautiful he is, she mused as she released his cool palm. I just wanted to thank you, Geoff told Giles. I know how you feel about the Council, but you really worked hand in hand with us on this one, and I appreciate it. And with the spell going off as planned, well... Geoff trailed off. Maybe well get the chance to do it again, who knows? Giles nodded. Id like that, he told Geoff. The Hunter checked his watch. You think Buffy will be back soon? he asked Giles. We dont have a lot of time, and I was hoping to say good-bye to her before we left.

She went with Xander to pick up some prescriptions for Faith, but the three of them should be back any minute. Karina approached Angel and Valeria. You both have souls? she wondered. They nodded in unison. Karinas eyes narrowed. Whats that like? Just imagine every sin youve ever committed lurking in your mind all the time, maybe not in the forefront, but in there. You cant forget them and you cant ignore them. The best you can do is make up for them. Valeria shook her head. Its horrible, in some ways. But its also beautiful. You can appreciate what is good in the world, and you can protect it. She gestured to Karina. Like yourself. Its the closest we can get to being human again, Angel explained. Karina looked at them both. May God continue to watch over you. So many are lost, and so few return. Angel nodded. Thank you, he said simply. Buffy together with Faith? Geoff inquired. That must be something to see. Giles folded his arms. Theyve mostly patched up their differences. Accent on the mostly, Payne put in. Giles turned to respond when another knock sounded on the door. Hmph, he grunted. Seems Im rather popular today. Excuse me a moment. He opened the door to reveal Buffy, Xander, and Faith, who stood propped up by Buffy. Im okay, Faith sniped at the blonde Slayer. Youre not okay, you got a stake in the gut. Now quit whining and let me help you. I swear, B-- I know, Buffy interrupted. All the damn time. Ive heard you. Ladies and gentleman, Xander called out behind them, closing the door, this is my life. Feel free to rescue me from it at any time. Both Slayers glared at him. Ill be payin for that one later, he groused, moving into the kitchen. Buffy, Giles addressed her as she eased Faith into an easy chair, Geoff Kerwins here. He came to say good-bye. Buffy stood up straight. Youre leaving already? Geoff nodded. Fraid so. The Council wants a full report. Soon as possible. She gave him a brief hug. It was good seeing you again. Even if you are working for those guys. Somebody has to, Geoff replied. Better that its someone you trust. Buffy nodded. Slayer, Karina spoke softly. Buffy turned to her. It was an honor working with you, the young woman muttered. Same here, Buffy replied. Karina bowed her head in respect to Buffy, who managed not to show her amusement at the gesture. Well, we have to go, Geoff repeated. Take care, everyone. He and Karina left as those assembled all wished them well. As soon as the door shut, Faith asked, Hey? How come it wasnt a fuckin honor to work with me, huh? What, Im a second class Slayer or somethin? Buffy shook her head. Youre somethin all right.

Faith settled for giving her a sour look.

The bell hanging from the door jingled as Giles entered the gallery. Be right there, Joyce called from the back room. Giles nodded to himself and moved over to take a look at a tall, thin Ethiopian statue Joyce had on display. Sorry about that, Joyce spoke, issuing from her office. I was just heating up a cup of soup from next door, and-- She rubbed her hands together. Oh, hello, Rupert. Giles smile matched hers. Im sorry I havent called or been by before now, but Im afraid its been rather hectic. He gestured toward the door. I cant stay long. Ive got to get Payne over to Oz and Willows apartment, something about the spell. He adjusted his glasses. The longest days of the year, and still not long enough to get everything done during daylight. Its good to see you too, Joyce told him, her voice warm. Without a crowd, anyway. Giles shook his head. I didnt want to let the day pass without seeing you, he told her. I hope were still on for dinner. Joyce nodded. Certainly, Rupert. Pick me up at eight? Of course it will have to be take out, he reminded her. Damned Spike couldnt have the decency to die last night like Druscilla did. Who knows what ridiculous scheme hell have cooked up tonight? Joyce tried to reply casually. Who indeed? Giles removed his glasses. Joyce, he told her, his voice softening, I assure you we will do all of this right once things settle down. Well go on a real date at a real restaurant, we wont come home until late, and there wont be any vampires or Slayers or anyone else staying at my apartment, so we can have a glass of wine and relax and just talk. He smiled sheepishly. Or whatever you like. I think just talking would be fine, Joyce murmured. For starters. She leaned in and kissed him, lightly, on the mouth. After all, we do have a lot of catching up to do. Giles struggled to maintain his composure. I look forward to that, he assured her softly. Joyce ran a finger down his shirt front. Dont be late tonight, Rupert. A gentleman never keeps a lady waiting. Giles cleared his throat. On that score, Joyce, you have nothing to be concerned about. Ill see you here at eight o clock sharp. Joyce smiled. Cant come soon enough. Giles returned her grin. Indeed no. But now, Im afraid-- You have to go, Joyce sighed. So go. Take care of Willow and Oz. Giles started to speak, but closed his mouth. Until tonight, he spoke, turning to depart. Joyce grinned as she watched him leave. He can be so unbearably sweet when he wants to be, she mused, moving back to her office and her cup of soup. Giles, meanwhile, climbed back into the car and drove off toward Willow and Ozs apartment. He remained silent, lost in his thoughts, barely aware that Payne sat next to him, studying him, until at last he stopped at a red light. Yes? he said, after realizing she regarded him. Payne chuckled. You really like her, dont you?

Joyce has been a good friend, and very understanding. Not everyone would be able to handle a stranger essentially stealing her daughter away from her for the bulk of her teenage years. Payne brushed her hair away from her face. Thats because she likes you too. And she sees that Buffy is in good hands. Giles turned to stare at her. How do you know she likes me? Payne smiled. Rupert, its terribly obvious. Put her in a crowded room and she checks on her daughter first and you second. Every time. You dont have to be a genius to see that. Shes certainly had to put up with a lot over the years, Giles admitted, giving the car some gas as the light changed. She did it because she trusts you. And deep down because she knows you love her daughter. And that counts for a lot. Giles nodded. I suppose it does, at that, he agreed. Shortly thereafter they pulled into the parking lot, and locking the doors behind them, they made their way to Oz and Willows apartment. A quick knock summoned the newlyweds, and soon the four of them sat in the living room full of moving boxes, a futon stretched out along the floor, and a phone sitting in the corner. Looks like youre ready to leave, Giles remarked, unable to keep a trace of sadness from his voice. More or less, Willow agreed. Two days from now, well be unpacking our stuff in L.A. Youll love it there, Payne told them. I did. Lived there for eight years. No place quite like it. Oz folded his arms, staring at Payne. The spell worked, he told her without preamble. I hoped it would, she informed him. No, I mean all of it, Oz clarified. You can control us. Thats impossible, Payne replied. I ordered you to attack Druscilla, and you -- I obeyed you, Oz finished. The only reason I was able to shake off your command was because I thought Jordis life was in danger. Otherwise, I would still be stuck to Druscilla. Or youd have a mouth full of ash, Willow pointed out. Oz shrugged. Or that. Payne raised an eyebrow. Are you absolutely sure? she asked him. Oz nodded. Sure as I can be. Im still gettin used to the whole remembering things in the wolf body bit. If youre right, Giles spoke up, this has staggering implications. Ill say, Willow agreed. I dont want you controlling all the werewolves, she snapped at Payne. They should be controlling themselves, not slaves to some witch -- no matter how good a witch you may be. They have a right to choose their own destiny, just like we do. Youre right, Payne told her. I know. Im sorry. You should be, Willow pouted. So how can we fix this? Oz asked. I can just not use my power, Payne offered. Oz stared at her. I was thinking something a little more permanent. Payne sighed. I cant just make it go away. The best I can do is relinquish it to someone. Whod you have in mind? Willow asked pointedly.

I thought maybe your husband, Payne told her.

Two vampires walked alone in the moonlight; armed to the teeth, they made their way silently down alleyways and between houses filled with sleeping people, always careful to make sure they werent being watched or followed. The taller darker one led them, as he knew the way better. After taking a long route to throw off any pursuers that might be keeping far back, they arrived at the edge of the clumpy overgrown field that had been the site of last nights spectacular battle. Aside from heaps of ash and some burned grass, nothing remained of that great conflict. This is it, Angel told her, leading her across the field to a wide, circular clump of earth where nothing would ever grow. This is the Hellmouth. And on the other side is the demon dimension? Valeria wondered. Angel nodded. Yes. This is just an opening, a doorway, like a hole in the wall between their world and ours. Isnt there any way to close it for good? Valeria queried. Im sure thats been tried, Angel responded. Good never seems to be able to contain evil for long. Sooner or later evil always finds a way to escape its prison. Or turn good, Valeria reminded him. She moved to him, but he backed away. Why do you keep your distance from me? Valeria asked him. Its not safe, Angel told her. You already said your soul is in no danger from me so long as you love another. She reached out again, slipping a hand inside his coat. I dont mind that your heart is given to Buffy. I dont love it, but I can accept it with no problem. She looked up at him. Why cant you? Its your soul Im worried about, Angel told her. Angel, she murmured, dont you see? Im the answer to your curse. I was meant to be with you. You dont have to spend all eternity lonely. You have me -- Im here to keep you company. Till death do us part? Angel inquired. Valeria nodded. But were already dead. She frowned at him. You will outlive any mortal woman you give your heart to. Any woman you love enough to keep with you, to make immortal, make a vampire, will turn evil on you. But you already have me. Im already immortal and I already have a soul. She spread her arms. You need look no further. Im right here. Its not right, he spoke softly. How could it not be? she countered. We are the only two of our kind in the entire world -- vampires with souls. How can it not be right to share that, to comfort one another through the long lives we will lead? Because were cursed, he reminded her. So that means we have to suffer constantly? Valeria asked him. We were given souls to make us human, not to make us suffer. Well always have the guilt of what weve done -- you more than me because youre older -- and that will never leave us. But that doesnt mean that we can never know joy, or companionship. She closed her eyes. Or love. I dont love you, Angel told her.

You dont have to! she answered. You just have to not turn me away. Thats a start. But you love me, he pointed out. She nodded. It cant work. Youll lose your soul. No, I wont, she argued. I promise. I swear. Angel chuckled. Its not something you can control. You think I wanted to leave Buffys side and run out into the rain and feel my soul get torn out of me like a living, breathing organ? Like something reached into me and took everything good and worthwhile and just ripped it right out of me? He shook his head. You dont have any choice. You feel that bliss, and your soul knows completeness, and total peace, and then, bam, youre evil again. And angry and enraged and afraid, scared that you were once even a little weak, that you tried to beg for forgiveness. It wont happen to me, she assured him. You cant be sure of that, he pointed out. Is it better never to try? she queried. Is it better to spend all our lives in darkness and never, ever once even try to grasp the light? The light kills us, he told her. She embraced him, pulling him to her. Ill take that chance. He moved back. I wont. I cant. Not for me, and certainly not for you. Its too risky. He gazed at her with his dark eyes. Passion can take a hold of you and make you lose control no matter how strong you are. Its happened to me. She nodded, finally seeming to accept his words. At least let me stay with you, then, when you return to Los Angeles. At least let us be friends. Partners, if nothing else. If youre thinkin Im eventually gonna give in, Angel posited, I can tell you right now its never gonna happen. Then it will never happen, she repeated. And in at least one way my soul will be a curse. He started to reply when he heard something approaching, something lean and low to the ground. Angel slipped in front of Valeria and drew a knife; his sword had been melted by the Kathol demon in last nights fight. A werewolf reared up in the tall grass, a dozen paces away. Oz? Angel wondered, lowering the knife. The wolf nodded its head yes. You here alone? A no, this time. Oz flicked his head back, gesturing to the street. Angel peered beyond the lycanthrope and saw Buffy, Xander, Giles, Willow and Payne headed toward him. Another spell? he asked the wolf. Oz gestured in the affirmative. Its never dull around here, is it? Valeria asked Angel. Thats why I went to L.A., he joked. I needed some peace and quiet.

corner. Neither of them would ever win any awards for neatness; and Buffys lack of domesticity suited him just fine. Me too, he agreed, scratching his belly under his t-shirt. Its what, two? Buffy squinted at the clock on the VCR, stripping off her tank top. Two-thirty, she mumbled. He nodded, yawning, slipping his jeans off and folding them once, setting them on top of the easy chair. He took off his shirt and tossed it toward the walk in closet, where a pile of their laundry lay commingled. Shit, Buffy said, sliding off her sweat pants. We have to do laundry soon. Our favorite thing, he agreed, stopping in the kitchen to take a swig from the orange juice carton. I dont want the vampires downwind to know Im coming, Buffy told him. She flicked off the light in the closet. You comin to bed? Xander finished with the o.j. and replaced the cap, closing the refrigerator door. Yah hah, he answered, moving into the living room and sliding an arm around Buffys slim waist. Big day tomorrow, he spoke, kissing her on the forehead. Oz and Willow leave on Wednesday. Tomorrows their last day in town. Dont remind me, Buffy mumbled, sliding her arms around his shoulders. She looked up at him, hazel eyes drooping. Carry me? she whispered. Gently he picked her up, walking slowly to the bedroom, setting her down only when he reached the bed. Buffy tucked her legs up so he could let her down on top of the bed. Thank you, she murmured. He leaned over and kissed her again. Harris taxi, any time, day or night. Buffy smiled, shifting into a cross-legged sitting position. She patted the bed next to her, and Xander clambered up behind her, encircling her with his long arms. Buffy sighed, leaning back into his chest. Mmmmmm, she moaned. So, Oz is the big werewolf guy now, huh? Xander mentioned. Yup, Buffy said, yawning again, closing her eyes. If Payne really did what she said she did. Will and Giles were keepin a pretty close eye on her, Xander reminded her. Willow looked like she was gonna tear Payne a new one. I think she wouldve, Buffy offered. Or I would have, if she couldnt. Hey, Buff, you know, Im no big fan of Paynes, but seems to me this all worked out. Oz is like the central werewolf dude, all the wolf people will follow him and fight the vamps, and she didnt even put the moves on Giles. Yeah, Buffy mumbled, rolling over so that she faced Xander, she left that to my mom. Your mom? Xander wondered. Buffy nodded, yawning. They had dinner together. My mom was telling me about it when you were loading up Giles car. She nuzzled his neck. I think theyre like dating or something. Her hazel eyes shot open. Im pretty sure that calls for an ew. I dunno, Xander responded. I mean, your mom doesnt have the best track record. There was that robot guy, that guy who turned out to be a vampire king, and then that security guy Zack. He ran a hand down Buffys back. Id say at least Giles isnt a horrible demon whos gonna come back and kill her or something. And hes not a creepy robot. Yeah, Buffy agreed. But hes... hes...

Xander undid Buffys ponytail, running his fingers through her long blonde mane. And lets not forget about Giles. Hes had, who... Jenny Calendar? Dead. Olivia? Betrayed him and then dead. Am I missing anyone? Not that I know of, Buffy slurred. So your mom would be good for him, too. He leaned his head back on the pillow. I dunno, Buff, I think it works. You would, Buffy managed. Hey, theyve given enough to the world, both of them, he told her. Without both of them, you wouldnt be who you are. And I dont know if Ive mentioned this, but I really like who you are. Buffys only response was a gentle snore. Xander smiled and kissed her on the top of her head. And I love you too, Buffy Summers, he whispered, sliding both of his arms around her.

Spike sat on top of a particularly large, flat tombstone, his hunting face revealed. Ever since Druscilla had died Spike had decided to allow the demon in him free reign. He had not reverted to his human face since that time, and he found that by retaining his demonic visage, by giving the demon a little more room to run free, that anger came to him as naturally as not breathing -- even faster than usual -- and that his darkness vision and hearing seemed heightened somehow. Nice time to learn all this now, when it cant do me any good, he mused bitterly. Twenty feet to his right the Kathol sat on the steps of a mausoleum, amusing himself by charring the marble pillars in asymmetric patterns. Spike knew the demon was short on intellect, but the Mohra had advised bringing him, and Spike wasnt in any position to give anyone a hard time right now, least of all someone who ostensibly wanted to help him. William, the Mohra demon spoke. Spike whirled around to find the green-skinned demon standing not twenty paces off, his arms folded, regarding the vampire. Howd you get so bloody close without me hearing you? The Mohra shrugged. I can move silently when I will it. I willed it. So, Spike said, rubbing his hands, hopping off the tombstone. Whatcha got for me? Some kind of anti-Slayer demon or something? No, the Mohra replied. There was one of those, but the Slayer killed him. Bitch, Spike hissed. Okay, so whats next? What else you got? I told you, William, Im interested in the balance. They took one of our warriors, so well take one of theirs. Spike waved a hand. Yeah, yeah, eye for an eye and all that crap, he muttered. Whatve you got? The Mohra turned slightly. Tapparich? he spoke. A tall being approached them, looming above both Spike and the Mohra, who wasnt all that tall himself. This is Tapparich, the Mohra introduced. Tapparich, this is William. Call me Spike, Spike instructed the tall demon. Glowing blue eyes bored into Spike. He has no soul, Tapparich announced. Pretty much par for the course, me bein a vampire and all, Spike retorted. The Mohra explained, Tapparich is a Mokktagar -- a soul hunter.

Spike tilted his head. Is that as promising as it sounds? The Mohra nodded. He is the mightiest of his kind. He hunts down the wayward of his race and returns them to his plane. I helped him a few years ago with a matter of a missing Mokktagar. Now he is in my debt. The Mohra turned to the tall blue demon. I wish to release you of your debt by having you serve William for a day. A day? Spike echoed. How many souls were you thinking of collecting? the Mohra queried. Spike grinned evilly. Good point. He looked up at the tall demon. Right, Tapparich. Well, lets get you inside before the sun comes up. Ill explain everything to you once were indoors. The tall blue demon nodded. William, the Mohra spoke. Spike turned to face him. Good luck, the green-skinned demon said simply. I wont need luck, Spike growled. Ive already got a plan.
