REPORT ON NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION 2 Communication using signs is a broad topic. Often signs are used to communicate since the process forms a habit in the subconscious mind. Sometimes people dont even realize they are using gestures when speaking. The idea that we cannot communicate effectively without gesticulating or making faces has raised questions even among reputable scientists. This and the need to get an insight into the real purpose people use signs influenced the choice of this topic. Non-verbal communication involves receiving and sending messages in a myriad of ways without using verbal words. It may be both intentional and unintentional. Both parties are not conscious of this. Non-verbal communication skills are essential in passing on the meaning of words. Their characteristics and different forms have, however, been neglected. The need to emphasize the use of signs as an important part in human interactions increased the drive to do a research on this topic. Above all the possibility, that one could pass on messages unintentionally as stated was of interest. The main characteristics of some non-verbal communication cues, that is, eye contact and use of gestures have been highlighted in the presentation. The differences between cultural and universal non-verbal communication have also been fully explored. A variety of cultures and the difference in meaning of the signs used among them is discussed. Acceptability of gestures or facial expressions across different cultures makes them universal. A gesture is not always reciprocated with kind in the global arena. A good example of such a gesture is the thumbs up as noted in the main presentation. The sign is offensive in Iranian society. However, when used in the American society, its meaning is entirely different and harmless. Study materials on the topic were not easily accessible. Among the books used are

The research process also included direct observation of people in conversation to note the signs frequently used. The work thus includes personal uninfluenced findings. In preparation for the presentation of the work, a lot of time was spent on rehearsing to perfect language and speaking skills. Noting the use of non-verbal communication skills among different people enabled me to create a more realistic presentation. Listening to oral presentations of professional business, presenters also helped create the right format for doing the work right.
