FROM THE PASTORS DESK

Dear Parish Family,
Peace and all good! The end is near! There is a sense of urgency that runs through all of this weekends readings. It reminds me of a very old joke: A priest and pastor from the local parishes are standing by the side of the road holding up a sign that reads, The end is near! Turn yourself around now before it's too late! They planned to hold up the sign to each passing car. Leave us alone you religious nuts! yelled the first driver as he sped by. From around the curve they heard screeching tires and a big splash. Do you think, said one clergy to the other, we should just put up a sign that says Bridge Out instead? Be that as it may, todays readings are no joke. "Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed," shouted the prophet Jonah as he made his way through that vast metropolis. (Jonah 3:1-5). Amazingly, instead of dismissing him as a harmless character, the people of Nineveh actually paid attention to his message and turned to the Lord in repentance. St. Pauls cry to his friends, the newly converted people of Corinth (1 Cor 7:29-31), is no less urgent: I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. But neither history nor Scripture reveal their full response to his plea. Our readings culminate with the words of Jesus himself to the people of Galilee as He begins his public ministry: "This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel." (Mark 1:14-20). So, what is everyone so excited about? What is so important that, like the Ninevites, the Corinthians, and the Galileans, we, too, should be prepared to drop everything and pay attention? The key is in the proclamation of Jesus. For Him, the sounding call is a proclamation of Good News, not of impending disaster. Its a wake-up call in the very best sense of the word: Hey, the Lord is coming! And He brings with Him the promise and embodiment of His Kingdom a Kingdom of true and lasting peace; of justice and reconciliation for all peoples. So, stop what youre doing and get ready!

If all of this feels like Lent is on its way, youre absolutely right. But a Lent which is true to its true and literal meaning: a true springtime of new life, hope, and promise in which we are invited to participate and about which, as a Christian people, we are called to witness with the example of our lives. We are called to pay attention, to be disciplined, awake and alert. So, like the old Army adage, lets hurry up and wait for the Lord and for the unfolding and fulfillment of His Life and Light in our world. Times awasting. The end is near! God bless,

Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so one may eat it and not die. John 6:49-50. We can now understand that this Epiclesis asks that, like the manna in the desert which fed the Israelites, the Holy Spirit might come upon these offerings like the dewfall and that they may become for us the Body & Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ. This question on the Roman Missal has allowed us to become more aware of how the Church has woven many texts and images of Scripture into our Eucharistic Liturgy. As we become more accustomed to this new translation, the rooting of our faith in the Scriptures will become more apparent. Bill Bischoff Director of Faith Formation

Fr. Chuck PS: Many thanks to everyone in our parish family for your warm and gracious welcome to the Franciscan Friars of the Province of St. Barbara during our weeklong Chapter meeting here at the Mission & Parish last week. We are all so grateful for your friendship, prayers, and support.--ct

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE
With gratitude for the gifts they have received, parishioners and visitors made a joyful return to the Lord of the following:

ROMAN MISSAL QUESTION CATECHETICAL MINUTE QUESTION #1

Where do the words like the dewfall come from in the consecration? They dont fit with the Mass!

COLLECTION FOR THE WEEKEND OF 1/15/12: Plate Collection: $4,723.65 Envelope Collection: $11,647.85 EFT Envelope Collection: $5230.33 On-line Giving: $38.00 TOTAL SUNDAY COLLECTION: $21,639.83 For parish operating expenses OTHER: SPECIAL COLLECTIONS: Franciscan Missions-Russia: TOTAL COLLECTIONS: $11,496.50 $33,136.33

RESPONSE:
What a great question! It allows me to teach & clarify at the same time. The words like the dewfall are actually not words of the consecration. Before the words of the consecration we have a prayer called the Epiclesis which is a prayer over the gifts which is an invocation of God the Father to send the Holy Spirit to transform the gifts of Bread and Wine. The words come in Eucharistic Prayer II, the Epiclesis is little changed except for the more accurate translation of spiritus tui rore sanctifica sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall. The image of dewfall recalls scriptural images; first the manna which descended upon the Israelites in the desert when dew fell upon the camp Numbers 11:9. This manna was a foreshadowing of the Holy Eucharist, as the Lord speaks in the Gospel of John;

Average weekly collection for the parish operating expenses this fiscal year to date: $21,756.27 Our weekly target is: $24,400.00

LIBRARY CATEGORY: "LITURGY"

Celebration of the Eucharist is central to our faith. The liturgy allows us to participate in the life, passion, death and resurrection of Christ. In the book "The Mass of the Early Christians", Mike Acquilina traces the historic development of the Mass from Jesus lifetime through the fourth century. Joseph Champlin, in "The Mystery and the Meaning of the Mass," identifies the changeable and unchangeable elements of the liturgy and the symbols surrounding it. And in "The Proper Balance, A Practical Look at Liturgical Renewal," Champlin reviews the accomplishments and problems of recent liturgical developments, suggests direction for reflection on liturgy and its style and significance. In this category, many of the books enhance appreciation of the Mass--God's sacramental gift to us.

As part of our continued catechesis on The New Translation of the Roman Missal we will begin a ten week series on the Eucharist Jesus With Us, starting Tuesday January 24th. Echoes of Faith is held in Room #1 in the Parish Center on Tuesdays from 11:00am-12:15pm. If you have any questions please call Bill Bischoff 760-547-0702.

Celebrating Catholic Schools

The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2012 is Catholic Schools: Faith. Academics. Service. The annual observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs for a week. This years Catholic School Week theme focuses on three priorities that Catholic schools, including our Parish school, Old Mission Montessori School, establish that make them stand out from other educational institutions. Children are taught faith not just the basics of Christianity, but how to have a relationship with God. Academics, which in Catholic schools are held to very high standards, help each child reach his or her potential. Service, the giving of ones time and effort to help others, is taught both as an expression of faith and good citizenship. Our Parish will celebrate Catholic Schools at the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday, February 5th. Children from our Parish school, Old Mission Montessori School, will participate in the choir and as altar servers. The school will also celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a special school Mass in the chapel on February 3rd and during various in-school activities throughout the week. Please join us at the 10:00 AM Mass on Sunday the 5th of February in celebration of Catholic School Week. Call 760-757 -3232 with any questions.

An evening of music prayer and a morning workshop with Trevor Thompson. This program is made possible through a Worship Renewal Grant from the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with funds provided by Lilly Endowment Inc. Del Escritorio del Prroco

Respuesta: Qu gran pregunta!

Marcos 1:15
