Network Planning

For a mobile operator 20 [MHz] of bandwidth is allocated. In order to oer the coverage in an urban area, the mobile operator uses small cells with radius R=600 [m]. The cellular system uses 100 [kHz] duplex channels. Because of the frequency reuse, the cells are grouped in cell clusters. For simplicity of calculations a hexagonal structure of cells is used. Only the rst tier of interfering cells is considered. 1 Find the number of channels per cell if the signal-to-interference ratio required for the performance of mobile system is a) 16 dB, b) 20 dB. The path-loss exponent for both cases is n = 4. 2 To reduce the inter-cell interference the mobile operator employees 120 sectoring cells instead of omni directional. 3 Repeat the same calculations as in sub exercise 2 if the path-loss exponent is n = 3. 4 Explain shortly the eect of path-loss exponent n in cellular planning. 5 Explain shortly the advantageous and disadvantageous of sectorized cells compared with non-sectorized cells. 6 Assume that the user is moved from the point that is shown in Figure 1 to the center of the cell. Calculate the signal-to-interference received by the user U if the path-loss exponent is n = 2.5 for the frequency reuse a) N=4, b) N=7.

Trac Theory

7 A total of 28 [MHz] of bandwidth is allocated for a mobile operator. The mobile operator uses 50 [kHz] duplex channels. Find the number of users that can be supported per cell at 1 % bloking probability if the cluster size is: a) 4-cell reuse, b) 12-cell reuse. Every user initiate calls at a rate of 1 call per 2.5 hours and each call has an average duration of 5 minutes. 8 A dense urban city has a population of 2.5 million. In this area, two mobile operators are oering cellular services. The st mobile operator A has 120 cells with 7200 channels in total. The second mobile operator B has installed 420 cells where each cell has 16 channels. Every user in mobile operator A initiate calls at a rate of 1 call per 2.5 hour and each call has a duration of 4 minutes. While in the mobile operator B each user is generating a trac of 0.02 Erlang. Calculate the percentage of the penetration market for each mobile operator assuming that both mobile operators are operating at maximum capacity at 2 % blocking probability.
