Recall 1) List the 5 post-war treaties and the countries that they applied to. St. Germain Treaty - Austria Trianon - Hungary Neuilly - Bulgaria Svres - Turkey Germany - Treaty of Versailles 2) What did Woodrow Wilson stand for (policies, ideas)? Wilson stood for the fruition of the democratic, liberal, progressive, and nationalistic movement of the century past, for the ideals of the Enlightenment, the French Revolution, and the revolutions of 1848. 3) What was the impact of the Versailles Treaty on the German military? The military was severely restricted: Army - limited to 100,000 men,no tanks and no General Staff,no conscription allowed. Navy - existing fleet to be handed over to Britain. No warships above a certain size,no submarines. Air force - no air force allowed. 4) What was the purpose and impact of the war guilt clause? Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies. The humiliation and anger caused by the war guilt clause led to the regression of democracy, and the rise of fascism in Germany.

Analytical 1) Why did Wilson compromise on many of his 14 points?

Under the United States constitution, the senate has to ratify all the treaties made by the United States. Wilson was not exactly a strong leader domestically, and the senate would have rejected many of his points. Further, while America lost 50,000 men in that war, the other powers at the conference counted their dead in the millions. European leaders were not about to let the peace terms be determined (and made more lenient) by a man they thought of as a newcomer who had not suffered and lost as much as they in the conflict. 2) How were the following German territories impacted by the Versailles Treaty? Saar, Lorraine-Alsace, Rhineland, East Prussia Saar: France control over the coalmines of Saar for 15 years. Alsace-Lorraine: they were returned to France. Rhineland: German fortifications and troops were banned from the wide belt of the Rhineland. Allies troops would occupy the Rhineland for 15 years to ensure German compliance with the treaty. East Prussia: The territories of East Prussia were disconnected from the German Empire by the creation of the new Polish state (cut off the bulk of Germany from East Prussia). 3) Analyze the following quote (pg. 715) with respect to Germany, the treaty was either too severe or too lenient The treaty was too severe to conciliate and not severe enough to destroy. The German Empire loss several territories, would have to pay an enormous debt (that didnt afford to pay), and disband their army, and navy (besides having no

air force). Nevertheless, some people wanted Germany destroy, but if Germany would be destroy, the European economy would too. Thats why some people said that it was not enough to destroy Germany and secure peace.
