Lesson Detail/Implementation
Have students seated on the rug. Allow students to look through the pages of their new science texts. Draw their attention to the colorful pictures and then ask them to share anything they saw that they are looking forward to learning about. Pg. (A) 40- for the next few weeks were going to be learning about animals. Have volunteer read title- All About Animals. We will also be learning some new vocabulary words about animals. I have the words on flash cards on the board. Lets read them together. Does anyone already know what some of these words mean? As we study science we will be learning all the meanings of these words. Read Did You Know? on pgs 40-41 Read pg 43- What animals need: The Duck Why is the pond a good home for the ducks? (Gives them food, air, water, and a home. Ducks like these feed underwater on seeds, snails, fish, fish eggs, and tadpoles.) How is the mother duck using this place? (To raise her young.) How are the ducklings using it? (To rest and stay safe.) Bring out paper chart of What Animals Need. When we read today we will learn why animals

Pg 44 horse and mountain lion. Reading. Q: What do an animals teeth tell you about what it eats? (Flat teeth are for chewing grass and sharp teeth are for tearing meat.) What kind of teeth do we have? Look at the pictures in book of the horse and the mountain lion.. How is a horses body designed for eating grass? Look at his mouth! (Lips and flat teeth are good for tearing grass and chewing, long neck allows it to reach down the ground easily.) How is the mountain lions (cougar/puma) body designed for catching food? (Sharp teeth to tear meat, powerful legs allow it to run fast after prey.) Pg 45- Camel, elephant Read. Q: How are the camels and the elephants getting the water they need? (By drinking) How does the elephants trunk help it get water? (It reaches down to the ground and can suck up even a little amount of water to bring to its mouth.) Qs What can you tell about the camels body that helps it get water? (Long neck for reaching.) How is the way the elephant and camel drink water the same? (Both have long body parts that reach down to take up water; both drink with their mouths.) How is the way they drink water different? (Elephant carries water up to its mouth; camels drink directly with their mouths.) Lets look at the camel and the elephant and do a little comparing
