Who am I ? Im Kelsey Anderson. What am I ? Im a designer. Am I allowed to call myself that yet? I think I am. But Im lot more than that.

Making things pretty is fun. But know what else is more fun!? *CLICK* RESEARRRRCH. Over the past couple years, Ive learned whats most important is not the THING, but WHY the thing is necessary. IF its necessary. WHERE its necessary.

subculture book
While this wasnt the rst project that we researched for, the research book was the rst thing we researched soooo extensively. Visual and verbal audits, multiple interviews, primary and secondary sources, photo journals, all that stu.
subculture book
Collecting and cataloguing all this information into the subculture book was a fun and educational exercise, and opened my eyes to an aspect of design I never really recognized before. Taking from all this information, I was able to creatttte...
healthy homes
My healthy homes system! These stickers were for the baby boomer care giver subculture I spent so much time researching.
healthy homes
They are meant to be placed in doctors oces. The language used, the imagery used, and the message contained were all invariably derived from the research book. I had a great time with this project, and was proud to be able to use the information that I had collected.
helping hands
Another instance where a project was heavily research-driven was the Helping Hands project I worked on with Karen. The research was not only done through traditional research methods, but through a poverty simulation.
helping hands
Being put in the shoes of the people we were designing for gave us the opportunity to understand the problems they face in a way that internet research could not. From all this, we created a system that addressed the disorganized state of information available to individuals of low income living in this city.
just a bookworm?
But talking about research for so long can seem boring. Im not boring. My work isnt boring.
folly poster
Its fun! Sometimes I like to have fun with my words, but when thats not possible, playing around with visual rhetoric will do just ne. In the poster done for the folly theater, I used metaphor to illustrate the musical style of the band The Bad Plus. Their music is chaotic and disjoined, with each member simultaneously improv-ing.
type mailer
Where-ever I can, I try to add at least a touch of playfulness. In my type mailer, I succumbed to my fancy for all things bird-related, and made a couple of birds out of characters Avenir and Baskerville.
type mailer
The back mirrors the playful feeling of the front, just with no birds on this side.
My seven deadly sins chicks has always been one of my favorite projects.
Hard not to love something that was so much fun to create. This project shows a lot of what I tend to lean towards as a designer. I love bright colors, friendly content with a dash of humor. (and birds)
bunny grahams
this is a fun and interactive piece that I made. Its packaging for bunny grahams, and instead of tossing away the box, kids that eat the snack have the opportunity to make a bunnie out of the pieces as well a with whatever they have around the house.
class crossover
This is the project that Brandon and I work on all semester in MX together. This is a system for kids, their teachers, and their parents. It facilitates class discussions while also acting as a database for resources, an online group space, and a study tool that uses online textbooks. Not only was this fun to research, but it was also a blast to design. Its still got the serious content that a school-related tool needs, but its wrapped in a middle-school-kid friendly package. PLUS, this project is very similar in theme to what I would like to in both my near and far future. Because, if you havent noticed, I have a thing for... (TAP LIGHTLY, 6 clicks)

KIDS
(STOP!) I dont know what I want to do as I designer, but I know who I would like to do FOR. children are young. They have malleable little minds! Theyre creative and open minded! But! Theres a problem! The problem that I would like to address!
from the get-go, in early education, kids are expected to enter the system already having an understanding of their shapes, colors, letters, etc. These expectations are new, as schools push their curriculum more and more every year. Children who attend daycares tend to be more prepared in these areas. But as for at-home involvement, theres often a lack of exposure to the academics that they are now expected to already know.
So for my project proposal, I would like to explore how graphic design can be used to organize and present early childhood development tools and activities for at-home use, while also promoting more parent-child interaction.
I have already begun to collect activities, texts, and tools through the internet. the site Pinterest has been surprisingly useful. I have also contacted Kindergarten teachers (dont be impressed, one of them is my mother) to begin gathering primary sources of information from their own classroom curriculum, as well as interview them on their thoughts and feelings as to what they expect from their new students.
I would like to go about the beginning of this project in a manner similar to the research book, collecting information on the subject, since it is a somewhat complex one, and the from there decide what to create as a nal artifact.
How can graphic design be used to organize and present early childhood development tools and activities for at-home use?
So thats what Ive got right now! I seriously value any input and advice you might have. Thank you!
