1. Column base connection

1.1 General
This category includes connection of columns on concrete made foundations. The
types of the connections which the program covers are the following :

Pinned connection with footing plate

Fixed connection with footing plate

Fixed connection with footing plate and Stiffners

The solution of the above referred connection is based on the "basic component

method". This method calculates the connection final strength from the resistances
of it's "basic components".
The "basic components" for these connections are:

1.2 Strength of concrete in compression

Strength of concrete in compression obtained from the relation:

f j = j k j f cd
The effective area of the fountation obtained from the relation

c = t(

fy
3 f j 0

) 0.5

With the effective area and the applied forces and moment the program calculates
the length of the compression area of the connection. which is used in order to
calculate the applied compression force both on the concrete foundation and the
equivalent T stub.

1.3 Strength of anchors in tension

The strength of one anchor in tension is obtained from the relation:

Ft, Rd = 0.9*fu,a As / 2 ( Table 6.5.3.)

The check of the anchors in tension is performed by the, known from previous,
applied tension force. Also the recuired anchorance length is being calculated using
the rules of EC2.

1.4 Strength of footing plate in bending

The strength of the footing plate in bending together with the associated anchors
in tension is obtained by using the equivalent T-stub method for both:

each individual anchor-row required to resist tension

each group of anchor-rows required to resist tension

more details for the equivalent T-stub method can be found at the "Beam to Column"
part of this manual.

1.5 Flange and web of the column in compression

The resistance of the columns flange and web in compression is obtained

by the formula:
Fc,fc,Rd = Mc,Rd / ( h - tFc )

1.6 Column's web in tension

(5.2.6.7)

The resistance of the columns web in tension is obtained by the formula:

Ft, wc , Rd = beff,t wc * twc*fy,wc kwc / o (5.2.6.3)

1.7 Strength of the Welds

In addition with the checks of the connections "basic components" the
resistance of the welds is being checked (column-footing plate, stiffeners etc) in
relation with the applied stresses. The check of the welds is obtained by using
the following relations of EC3 (Annex M):

2 + 3 ( 2 + // 2 ) f u /( w Mw )

= Vz,sd / A w // = Vy,sd / A w
f u / Mw where : = N /A +
/ wy + Mz,sd / wz

sd
w
y,sd

1.8 Shear resistance of the connection

As concerns the resistance of the connection in shear the following checks are
performed:
a) resistance of anchors in shear (when no shear element exists)
b) resistance of the footing plate in bearing (when no shear element exists)
c) resistance of the shear element in bending and shear
In order to calculate the resistance of each anchor in shear the following
formulas of EC3 are used:

f v , Rd =

0 ,6 f ua f s
mb
, for anchor's quality 4.6 / 5.6 / 8.8

f v , Rd =

0,5 f ua f s
mb
, for anchor's quality 4.8 / 5.8 / 10.9

f v , Rd =

0,6 f ua f
mb
, for all qualities when the shear plane passes through the
portioned part of the anchor.

The resistance of the footing plate in bearing at each anchors position is obtained by
using the formula:

f b , Rd =

2,5 f ua t
mb

For the anchors which combine shear with tension the shear resistance is reduced
according to the following formula:

Fv ,Sd
Fv , Rd

Ft ,Sd
1.4 Ft , Rd

1.0

The resistance in shear for each anchor row is the minimum result of the above
checks and the final resistance of the connection in shear is found by adding the
resistances of all the bolt rows of the connection.
When a shear element exists all the applied shear force is considered to act on it and
all the above check for the anchors are omitted, instead of them the following checks
of the shear element performed according to the EC3:

p,Rd

,V

1.9 Rotational stiffness of the joint

The procedure of the solution is described at the EC3 part 1.8. The rotational stiffness
of the joint is determined by the flexibility of the "basic components" through the
elastic stiffness coefficient ki as shows the next formula:

S j ,ini
where:

E z2
e
=

1
1
e + ek
(
+
)
k T ,l k T , R

kj is the stiffness coefficient of the "basic component" i

z is the lever arm
is the fraction of the stiffness Sj,ini/Sj

Simplified bi-linear design moment-rotation characteristic

The column base joints are classified as rigid, nominally pined or semi-rigid according
to its stiffness through the comparison of their rotational stiffness SJ,ini and the
boundaries given by EC3 part 1.8 which are:

Boundaries for stiffness clasification of beam to column joints
