Environment and Safety

A new lime mud filter of higher capacity was installed in causticizing plant to further control/reduce loss of chemicals going with Calcium sludge . In order to reduce water consumption, uncontaminated water from paper machine section, chemical recovery section and power plant is collected separately and is used as fresh water. Paper machine effluent is segregated and treated separately in 20 m diameter clarifier. Clarified effluent, to the extent of 95%, is reused in pulp mill and chipper house. In order to keep the environment clean, CPM has planted 50000 trees in and around factory and colony premises in the year April 2006 to March 2007. Mill has been awarded TPM Excellence Award-2006- 1 st category by JIPM, Japan. Mill has been awarded IPMA Award for Energy Conservation-2005-06. Domestic sewage is treated properly in 7 Nos. of septic tanks and then taken to main effluent treatment plant alongwith mill effluent. Online pH meter has been installed at the inlet of effluent treatment plant for better control of pH. Old inefficient feed pumps and motors in paper machine clarifier has been replaced by new efficient pumps and motors for reducing energy consumption. In order to reduce pollution load in effluent unbleached pulp is deknotted in the recently installed modern 3 stage pressure screening system. Screened pulp is then processed

in Oxygen Delignification Plant. Oxygen Delignification plant has been installed in the Pulp Mill which has resulted in the reduction of elemental Chlorine consumption and AOX content in the treated effluent as per CREP guideline. Chlorine Dioxide plant has been installed in the pulp mill which has resulted in the reduction of elemental chlorine and hypochlorite to minimize AOX content in the treated effluent as per CREP guidelines. All boilers are equipped with ESPs (Electrostatic Precipitators) Environment and safety has always been priority area in mills operation. The Environment Management System has been introduced in the mills and the company has been awarded ISO 14001 certificate during 2001-02. Unit CPM was awarded National Safety Award- 2004. CPM believes in sustainable development and thus it has adopted two pronged strategy to abate pollution. Pollution control at source by adopting cleaner technology and End of pipe treatment CPM has introduced TPM (Total Productivity Maintenance) a Japanese work culture which covers environmental and safety aspects also. Use of peroxide bleaching to reduce pollution load in effluent and use of Atmospheric Fluidised Bed Combustion Boiler to reduce NOx emission are few examples of pollution control measures at source. Following major jobs have been carried out during the last 3 years: Effluent An on line pH meter was installed at inlet of effluent treatment plant to eliminate excess consumption of lime and proper operational control of ETP. Earlier pulp was washed in 3 stages counter current washing system. One more washer was added to improve washing of pulp, increase recovery of chemical and reduction of COD and BOD in effluent. Air : One ESP was provided for Stoker fired boiler No. 1 and thus all the boilers are equipped with ESP and the old stack of 50 mtr height of spreader stoker boiler was replaced with new RCC stack of 70 mtr height for reducing pollution. Solid Wastes : All possible care is taken to dispose off the solid wastes judiciously. Lime

sludge is filled in abandoned stone quarry and ETP fibrous sludge is utilized for making packaging board and bamboo dust is burnt in boilers for generating steam thereby replacing the equivalent quantity of coal. Coal ash dust from Boilers is utilized for moulded brick making for Civil constructions.

CPM received following awards 1. Winner of J.I.P.M. TPM Excellence 1 st Category Award for the year2006. 2. Winner of CII National Award for excellence in Energy Management2005 3. Indian Paper Manufacturers Association adjudged unit : CPM as outstanding Paper Mill of Year award 2003-04. 4. National Safety Award 2004. 5. Energy Conservation award for the year 1999 from Indian Paper Manufacturers Association 6. Golden Jubilee Memorial Trust award for Outstanding pollution control programme for 1999-2000 from Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry

Process Description: Expansion at JK Paper Mills will involve the latest process features in pulping and paper making. Some of the existing sections of mill will be retained and augmented to cater to the requirements for the enhanced capacity. Raw Material Preparation: The raw material primarily comprises of 95% wood and 5% bamboo. Wood mainly used is Casuarina, Eucalyptus, Subabul and Sal. Presently, the raw material preparation involves chipping of tree trunks into small sizes of about 15mm to 25 mm long and wide and 2 to 5 mm thick. The chips are then screened and small chips are removed for further processing, while oversized are again subjected to chipping. The screened out chips are conveyed to the chip silo through conveyors. Chipping operation is carried out with the help of drum chippers of Vecoplan make. For enhanced capacity, the existing drum

chippers will be retained. Additionally, new disc chippers will be installed for the increased requirement of chips along with a new screening system and a higher capacity chip silo. Fibre line (Pulping and bleaching): The chips from chip silo will be conveyed to the new temperature for 4 hours, whereby the unwanted materials, like lignin and hemicellulose gets removed from the material. The unbleached pulp produced from the cooking plant will be further processed in the downstream sections of the new 0.2 MTPA (BD) fibre line. The fibreline will be designed to process fully bleached mixed tropical hardwoods for a target brightness of 90% .

Recovery section: The weak black liquor generated from the cooking plant will be processed in a completely new soda recovery plant. It will be concentrated in the new single street evaporator line with high steam economy. The liquor from the recovery boiler is treated with lime to regenerate the cooking chemicals in the modern recausticizing plant. The lime sludge generated as a byproduct from the recausticizing operation will be processed in the lime kiln. A new 300 TPD lime kiln has been proposed to be installed for processing the lime sludge to be generated in the recausticizing operation and the existing 165 TPD lime kiln plant shall be phased out.

Paper machine section: The bleached pulp from the fibreline will be utilized to manufacture paper on the new paper machine as well as on the existing PM-I and PM-III. The new paper machine will produce 150,000 tonnes per annum cut size copier and office papers, which will include papers for laser and inkjet printing.

Finishing house: The manufactured paper will then be converted into reel or A4 sheets depending on the market demand. In view of the increased copier production, 2 Nos. of 75,000 tonnes per annum of 10 pockets cutter with packing have been envisaged. The existing 2 Nos. of cutter will also be retained. Raw Material Requirement: The major source of raw material for the proposed project has been destined to be Andhra Pradesh. The bamboo, which is used in very low quality is sourced from Orissa only.Chemicals used includeCaustic lye, HCI DM Grade, Hydrogen peroxide (50%), Sodium Sulphate, Non-Ferric alum, Precipitate calcium carbonate and Starch.Total coal requirement is 2.28 lakh tonnes per year.75% is sourced as linkage coal, and 25% will be obtained from open market and Eauction.

Total power requirement is projected to be 48.5 MW. To meet the power requirement it is envisaged to put up a new power plant with high pressure boiler and turbine, which will completely replace the existing power plant. The total water requirement of the mill after its expansion including the requirement for the existing colony works out to be 31,960m3/ day. The source of water for the project is Nagavali River passing east of the project site. Number of working days in a year are 365 and there are 3 shifts each of 8 hours. Man Power

The number of persons to be employed for the construction purpose works out to be about 1500 to 2000. During operation phase 753 persons will be employed.
