Dinos Dugout Sports Bar also closed
By Lori Maranville
Special Writer

The Campfire Family Restaurant and the adjoining Dinos Dugout Sports Bar have closed their doors, with no word from the owner on what prompted the business abrupt shutdown or whats in store for the building that houses them. Owner Dino

Koukoumtzis, who inherited the restaurant from his late father, George Koukoumtzis, could not be reached for comment. The Koukoumtzis family has owned the Campfire Restaurant since 1978. Milan City Administrator Ben Swayze said the water has been shut off to the building, which is typically an indicator that a business will be closed for a period of time, whether permanently or for renovation purposes. We have not received notice whether its permanently closed or hes work-

ing on opening back up again, Swayze said. Calls to the business indicate the phone line has been disconnected. Calls to Koutoumtzis home in Dexter have not been returned. The business permits to sell alcohol, a Resort Class C and SDM license, are currently being held in escrow by Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs in Lansing. According to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission, Dino

City opens outdoor skating rink

Ofcial grand opening set for Feb. 4 in park
By Joyce Ervin
Special Writer

Milan Parks and Recreation Director Ben Swayze is hoping for cold weather. Freezing temperatures will ensure the ice is ready for the official opening of Milans newly constructed ice skating rink scheduled to take place from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 4 in Wilson Park. This project has been a goal of the Parks and Recreation Commission for the last few years to provide a safe and family-friendly winter outdoor activity for Milan area residents,

Cameron and David Dietrich join Starrlin Bonner at the city ice rink in Wilson Park in Milan for some winter fun. Swayze said. The opening promises to be a great event. After a short ribbon-cutting ceremony, where the major donors that made the building of the rink possible are recognized, the festivities will begin. Skaters will enjoy the ice under the park lights, while music is provided by the Backstreet

Cruizers. If skating should work up an appetite, the refreshment wagon will be on site offering hot dogs and popcorn. Guests can warm their hands and enjoy hot chocolate or coffee, and gather around one of several fire pits. Picnic tables and a small set of bleachers are provided for seating and changing skates. Ann Gee, chairwoman of the Milan Parks and Recreation Commission for 2012, said the commission has wanted a safe place for skating for many years. Residents previously have skated on Ford Lake. The lake didnt always have a smooth skating surface, however. We can control the surface and the rink is safer,

Milan Area Schools will soon be rolling out plans for its Center for Innovative

Studies at the high school. The project-based learning center being built on to the existing high school building will be geared toward the districts 12th grade students and will be paid for through the bond passed by the community in 2009. Its slated to open in the fall 2012, as site work continues on the addition and

the staff prepares to talk to students about course offerings. Julie Helber, assistant superintendent for Milan schools, said the district has been working for three years investigating different educational models to decide what curriculumtied programming will be offered in the space. The goal is to provide

a transition program for senior class students to go from high school to the real world, Helber said. It will be guided by graduation requirements, she said, but will offer more of an experiential learning experience. The design provides for flexibility with a large open atrium, and many adaptable spaces for small and

large-group learning situations. Although staff is still in the process of developing more detailed course descriptions, the curriculum will incorporate digital arts and graphics; advanced sciences; business and marketing; and technology and fabrication.
