How do I troubleshoot problems connecting online (Infrastructure mode) on the PSPgo system or PSP portable entertainment system?
Answer ID: 472

Infrastructure Mode allows you to connect your PSPgo or PSP system to the Internet. If you are experiencing problems using Infrastructure mode on the PSPgo / PSP system, try these troubleshooting options:

Infrastructure mode troubleshooting

4. Turn off Power Saving on the PSPgo / PSP system Try deactivating the Power Saving feature in the PSPgo / PSP system. 5. Go to (Settings) > (Power Save Settings) and press the button. 6. Highlight WLAN Power Save and choose Off. 7. If you can't connect to SCEA game servers or network If you can access the Internet but not our game servers or network, it may be a firewall issue with your network, see TCP and UDP (firewall) port numbers needed to connect online with PlayStation products for details. 8. Confirm Security Key If your wireless network access is security-enabled (encrypted) from open access, you will need your WEP or WPA Security Key (password). If you do not know this information, speak to the person who configured your home network settings. The PSPgo / PSPgo / PSP system supports WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and WPA (Wi-Fi Protected Access) encryption technology, capable of using 128-bit/64-bit encryption keys. In addition, WEP information for all devices on a single wireless local

area network (WLAN) must match exactly. If you use a WEP key on a PSPgo / PSPgo / PSP system which differs from the WEP key on the wireless access point (WAP) you are trying to connect to, the wireless connection between these two devices will fail. 9. Confirm SSID Verify your Service Set Identifier (SSID). Since scanning for SSIDs with your PSPgo / PSP system can pick up other wireless networks, make sure you have selected the correct SSID which belongs to your own wireless network. It is also possible that your WAP has the SSID broadcasting feature turned "Off", which means your PSPgo / PSP system will not pick up the SSID when scanning for available wireless networks. You will need to either turn "On" the SSID broadcast feature on your WAP, or speak to the administrator of your network to obtain your SSID. A SSID is essentially the "name" that you give to a wireless network. Any wireless device that you want to be able connect to the wireless network must know the SSID for that network. The SSID is controlled by the wireless access point (WAP) for the network. An SSID may be any combination of ASCII characters (i.e., any combination of letters, numbers, punctuation marks, etc.) The PSPgo / PSP system will allow you to enter the SSID two ways: enter the SSID manually or scan for available wireless network SSIDs. Entering the SSID manually will require that you type the SSID into the input box, and then saving the setting. Scanning will scan all channels for available SSIDs, and then report the SSIDs, signal strengths, and WEP status (whether or not they have WEP enabled). It is important to know that an SSID will not always be broadcast from a WAP. In some cases, you will need to get the SSID from the administrator of the wireless network and enter it manually. An SSID that is not being broadcast will not show up on a scan. 10. Find out if your Wireless Access Point (WAP) requires a MAC address Certain wireless networks may only allow registered devices (i.e., computers, phones, PSPgo / PSP systems, etc.) to connect. This is done by entering the MAC address into the WAP (i.e., router) which is called MAC address filtering. If your WAP is configured to "filter" MAC addresses, you will need to enter the PSPgo / PSP system's MAC address into the WAP's MAC filter table. To find your PSPgo / PSP system's MAC address: 1. Go to (Settings) > (System Settings) and press the button.

2. Highlight [System Information] and press the button. 3. You will see your MAC Address listed inside. Be sure to write down the entire string of letters and numbers, including the colons ":" in between. 11. Power-cycle ALL network equipment, including any VOIP modems Power-cycle all of your network equipment, including any wireless access points, routers, and broadband modems for two (2) full minutes. "Power-cycle" simply means to turn the device OFF (i.e., unplug it from the power source), and then to turn it back ON again after a set period of time (in this case, 2 minutes). This will allow the network device to refresh its settings. After 2 minutes, you can turn on (or plug in) your equipment.

IMPORTANT: If you subscribe to Voice Over IP (VOIP) for telephone service, you'll want to make sure you have completely power-cycled the VOIP equipment (i.e., VOIP modem) for 2 full minutes also. Many VOIP modems are equipped with back-up batteries that keep the device ON, even after it's been unplugged. You may need to contact your ISP if you need more assistance with power-cycling your VOIP device. 12. Too many wireless devices on one network Be advised the more devices that are trying to connect to a single access point at one time, the less the chance of a stable connection. Dividing the available wireless bandwidth among too many devices can cause problems. 13. Clear any interference or obstacles to strengthen your Wi-Fi signal Try positioning the PSPgo / PSP system closer to the wireless router or wireless access point (WAP) to enhance the wireless signal. If you are using the PSPgo / PSP system in a room with large pieces of metal furniture, or metal in the walls between you and your WAP, try moving to a room with fewer physical barriers between you and the access point. Large metal objects or metal walls may interfere with, or reflect, the wireless signal. Also, make sure you don't have any active devices located nearby that might interfere with a wireless signal, such as: 14. Microwave oven 15. Florescent lighting 16. Bluetooth wireless devices 17. 2.4 gigahertz cordless phones 18. High powered audio equipment 19. Television sets or computer monitors 20. Electronic insect "zappers" 21. Any other electronic equipment that may produce Radio Frequency (RF) interference 22. AOSS (Airstation One-Touch Secure System) If you are using a Wireless Access Point that is equipped with AOSS (Airstation OneTouch Secure System) technology, you may wish to contact the manufacturer of your Wireless Access Point for additional assistance configuring the AOSS enabled WAP. 23. Verify the compatibility of the software title (game title) Confirm that the software you are using supports Infrastructure play by checking the Feature Notices on the back of the game box. Only software with the "Wi-Fi Compatible (Infrastructure)" or "Wi-Fi Compatible (Ad Hoc/Infrastructure)" Feature Notices are compatible with Infrastructure play. 24. Check the WLAN switch Make sure the WLAN switch on the PSPgo / PSP system is turned on.

25. For PSPgo system: The WLAN switch is located on the left side. Slide up to turn on.

26. For PSP-2001 and PSP-3001: The WLAN switch is on the top of the unit to the left of the UMD door. Slide the switch to the right to turn on.

27. For PSP-1001: The WLAN switch is on the left side and slide up to turn on.

28. Confirm your home network connection Confirm that you are able to connect to the Internet from your location using your home computer, on the same network. If you cannot connect to the Internet, you may need to contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) for additional assistance on your account/connection. Whether you are a new or an existing customer with your ISP, if you need your ISP account settings (such as a username and password for DSL customers), you will need to speak directly with your ISP. Note: Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) does not have access to your ISP account settings. 29. Confirm your network equipment Make sure your network router supports Wi-Fi connections. If the router does not support Wi-Fi, you will need to use a Wireless Access Point (WAP). If you do not know how to operate or access your network equipment settings, (such as your DSL or Cable router settings), you will need to contact the manufacturer of the equipment directly. If you are leasing the equipment from the ISP, please call your ISP for more details. 30. Check your PSPgo / PSP system software version Make sure you have the latest version of the PSPgo / PSP system software installed. Visit PSPgo / PSP system Software Update for information on the most recent version.

To check what version is installed on your PSPgo / PSP system, go to (Settings) > (System Settings) > [System Information]. The system will display the System Software version number.
