Constructive Self Criticism, for the better

To assess the activities done for the whole year, as well as the performance of the Executive Committee, UPLB SELES held its annual Constructive Self Critisicm (CSC) at the Electrical Engineering Building last December 16. The program was spearheaded by the Socio-Cultural Committee, headed by Nahdiya Zaheer Betonio. Due to time constraint, the CSC was done faster this year unlike the previous years. Committees were evaluated first, then the Top 3 afterwards. After the assessments, the traditional heartgiving was done. Six hearts of different colors (symbolizing different feelings) were given to each member for them to give to his/her brod or sis.

Meneses, Colegio vie for Mr and Ms Engg 2012

Alejandro Meneses (Mr. SELES 2012) and Czarina Colegio (Ms. SELES 2012) proudly represented the organization during the PrePageant Night of Mr. and Ms. Engineering 2012 held last December 2, 2011 at the Electrical Engineering Auditorium. The pre-pageant night marked the launch of Engineering Meet 2012 with the theme Supremacy Beyond Ages and is hosted by UP Society of Agricultural Engineering Students (UP SAGES). The eleven pairs stood out in their costumes that were all in PreHispanic style (inspired by the tv show Amaya). Also, they showcased their good looks and skills during the casual wear, formal wear and sportswear competition. The Pageant Night, along with the Eng Meet Cheerdance Competition, will be held on February 4, 2012.

MOTOR Complex
By Lester Pelaez
Life is a matter of choices. There would come a point when we need to decide if we will involve ourselves in things that will forever be tattooed in our lives. A simple question answered with a simple yes has opened an opportunity for 11 EE students to take a big leap out of their normal school life to a path many other students has already walked into. And yes, after going through weeks of pressure, pain, laughter, sleepless nights and tears, at last, we were able to become part of the blissful family that UPLB Society of Electrical Engineering Students is. This is a written account of those students who dared to accept the challenge.
Adrian Carl Rivera Adrian is known as the most kupal member of MOTOR, ironically, in a good way. Whenever an exhausting night is about to end and almost all of us were out of energy to walk from CEAT to wherever we are going to have our batch meeting, expect this lad to have that naughty smile on his face and prepare yourself to be teased. Practically his way of breaking the ice is through bullying one of us and just after a few minutes, youll have your mood lighten up and you can see yourself laughing at his silly jokes. His overflowing energy can surely help you survive a stressful night. Jayvee de los Reyes When you hear someone singing in the four corners of the EE building, theres a high probability that it is Gavee. That husky baritone voice of him seems to be popular during the reporting process. You will be carried away by the way he talks and with his voice as if he is about to cry. A lot of people say that he is somewhat lousy or fragile-looking but that is probably because of his appearance. This 43kilo joker can make you laugh nonstop whenever hes in the mood. Looking at him, you cant expect him as one of the more industrious applicants during our reporting time. As the saying goes by, walang malaking nakakapuwing. Napoleon Joey Vistal Jr. Joey is often the silent type of guy but I know that the reason for this is that he thinks of so many things all at once. If you want someone to talk to and does not have anything to do, find him and be entertained especially by his knock knock jokes. Hes not a man but hes a bird. Soaring high and diving so deep, you will admire for being an actor. Yes, he is Justine Carl Zantua Gavees soothing RNB voices counterpart would be Justines suave moves. Mr. Batch Leader is also Motors awesome dancer. His level of passion in dancing maybe equal to the level of his persistence in becoming a member of SELES and thats just one of the many reasons we made him our batch leader. an actor! Want to know his famous movies? Watch Happy Feet and Penguins of Madagascar and Im sure youll love him very much. Haha. Just kidding! Johanne Vhalmegar Rivera Whos the man? Whos the man? Definitely its Johanne (hari e!). Hes a king, not just one or two, but three kings. Its obviously because of his name Vhalmegar which, according to him, was originally Balmegas. Hes the tallest guy among all of us and whos afraid of Son Goku. He does not want anyone angry at him so even if he commits the smallest mistake, he will never forget to say sorry to you. And when it comes to serious matters, he can take the responsibility. Leoncio Jumarang Jr. Motors very own ENCHONG!! Whenever you greet him using that name, his initial response would be the inimitable Enchong-smile. Hes a very serious guy who takes reporting seriously. Most of the reporting time, he is being bullied by majority of the members and maybe the reason you cant see him laughing. He was forcedly deferred in the reporting process when he was a freshman and maybe the reason he showed the serious attitude on his second time of reporting and the urge to be part of the org he tried to be with before. His laughs are so rare I told you!

Perhaps one of Justines positive points is that he always makes sure that all of his batchmates have no worries at the end of the day. This guy from Camarines Norte is simply amazing, incomparable and worthy of being our batch leader. Nigel Anne Delos Reyes Want to learn K-POP? Well, Gel is the person that can help you. Being the only girl in the batch, Gel seems to be an inspiration for all the members of Motor. She reminds us that if a girl like her can handle the reporting process, why cant we? Shes the source of everyones urge to continue on the reporting process despite the hardships and humiliations we get. Shes an example of a very strong girl that nothing, even her sickness, can stop her from reporting. Lester Pelaez Lester is the Master of Dougie-Dancing. He has a unique and amusing way of dancing it. This lad from Marinduque never ran out of stories. Whenever youre with him, all you have to do is to listen to whatever wit he has. Among us, he contributes the most acceptable ideas. Thats why almost all our plans came from his core of wisdom. Lester, which became Les which eventually became Lex, tirelessly says gwapo ako and fortunately, none of us agrees with it. We just tolerate it. Paolo Dominico Del Mundo Lousy as some of the members think of him, Nico seems to be the most athletic member of the group. Ralph Gerald Escueta Commonly known as Ralph in the campus is a man of determination. Even though obstacles and hardships block along his way, he never ceased to do what he aim for especially being a part of the SELES family. During those reporting days, there are few times that he just wants to raise his hands and give up everything that he has started but he decided not to leave his batchmates realizing the importance of the word BATCH UNITY. Being a certified member of the SELES family, there is one memory during the reporting that he will reminisce and humiliate him. It is when he was asked of the 6 th committee, he answered the Discipline Committee. Raymond Mabilangan Use Aileen Antenor in a sentence: Aileen ba ang mas madali? Antenor-o mo kasi parehong mahirap eh J That was one of his bentang jokes during the Fun Raising Activity. Silent as he may seem, he is regarded as the most intelligent person in the batch. His opinions during batch meetings always make sense and sometimes a lot of sense. Due to his facial similarities with Kuya Gem, he received a lot of attention during the process thus, branding him with a new nickname: yim. Looking at his physical appearance, you can define what a strong man is. Hes brave enough as if hes ready for whatever might happen on the reporting process. Hes also a joker making him like a barrelbarrel of laughs! Hmmmp. Hes definitely a big man with a big heart!

Reporting to the members up to the finals was an experience that will surely be added in our treasure box. It has taught us to stand by our choices, consider which things are more reasonable or ethical to do, respect the people we are with, take care of each other, and most importantly, value our own selves. From complete strangers way back 11th month of 2011 to 11 newest brods and sis of the UPLB SELES, batch 11-B is now ready to take every challenge in their new life. What lies ahead of us is yet to be known. The challenge that MOTOR now has to face is to prove themselves worthy of being called members of the organization.

Women: Tower of Beauty and Strength

6 Everybody in our society, men and women alike, has significant roles to perform. Like the human body, where the amputated foot affects the whole body, the sad plight of women will adversely affect the society. Thus, we must do something to bring about genuine gender equality. We are fully aware that the Philippine society is dominated by men well, yes, almost in all aspects. Now, let us take a look at the side of the women, who seeks for the right to be respected. Rizal believed that bravery was a common thing in the young women of our people. From his famous letter To The Young Women of Malolos, we quote: woman, like A people that respect the Filipino people, serve such obloquy. They should be respected and cared for. To be truly empowered, women must first look into herself and recognize her innate ability to make the world a better place. The pureness of heart and mind is what really matters most. This is our dream; this is the desire we cherish in our hearts; to restore the honor of woman, who is half our heart, our companion in the joys and tribulations of life.

Driving Towards an Energy Sustainable Future

Power generation is perhaps the most important technology that drives all modern day industries. This is why research and development in power generation is given an imperative focus. The progress in this area would undeniably affect not only the field of power engineering but the whole economic and industrial condition. With the quandaries facing the present power generation, many government and private companies are developing ways in order to produce electricity with minimized environmental risks from a material that is not obsolete in nature. Solar, Wind and Hydroelectric power are very much implemented these days however; the inefficiency of these systems compare to the more familiar power generation is a setback. New Energy Technologies Inc. is a private corporation dedicated in developing power generation technologies. Their most advanced project is. Motion PowerTM. Motion Power utilized the moMotion Power prototype installed in Burger King Hillside, New Jersey

tion of moving vehicles along a road. Motion Power technology applies piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity to convert friction and decelerating energy of cars to produce usable power. When a vehicle is about to stop, friction and energy is lost due to braking. Motion Power plates helps vehicles in slowing down while harvesting the energy in form of brake heat. In America, an average of 6 billion miles is being travelled by vehicles every day. Motion Power hopes to utilize even a small fraction of the kinetic energy of these moving vehicles to be converted to electricity.
