Raiders Run Out Knights Dethrone DeMatha for WCAC Title of Time Against Panthers
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer After falling behind 6-1 in Mondays 4A-3A Regional playoff game against visiting Annapolis High, the first-seeded Leonardtown Raiders came back with authority, outscoring the Panthers 4-2 in the second half. But as Raiders coach Matt Chew said, the Raiders simply ran out of time, and the Panthers went back to Anne Arundel County with a 9-6 upset over Leonardtown. The Panthers controlled the tempo early in the first quarter, taking a 3-0 lead over the 14-2 Raiders. With 3:21 remaining in the quarter, Annapolis added another, but referees waved it off for illegal procedure. That call led to a Raider goal by Tim Boas with less than three minutes in the first period.

Leonardtown Eliminated by Annapolis

Annapolis had another strong quarter in the second, scoring three quick goals to go up 6-1. We came out flat in the first half, which really hurt us, said junior attacker Kenny Aicher. At the 6:44 mark, Leonardtowns Igor Laray put the ball in the back of the net to cut the Panthers lead to four. Before the end of the half, however, Annapolis made it 7-2 on a goal by Keith Murray, his second. Though the Raiders were down five at intermission, they took the field in the second half with confidence. Right off the bat, Boas buried his second goal of the game, this time off a Matt Oeschsel assist, who put a hit on Annapolis Brian Gehrdes on the other end of the field, stole the ball and brought it to Boas, who was open in front of the net. Taylor Cook winds up for a shot in the Knights win over Good Counsel last Friday. He scored four goals in the win over DeMatha.

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer DeMatha enjoyed eight long years at the top of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC). On Monday night at the University of Maryland, the Ryken Knights put an end to DeMathas reign as they beat the Stags, 13-12, after losing in the semifinals the last three seasons.

Its a new feeling for us, said Ryken assistant coach Jay Sothoron. Its still settling in. Its one of the best feelings Ive ever had, added junior Zach Angel. We worked so hard for so many years to get there and we finally got it. Its definitely a great feeling. The Knights were led by Angel, the WCAC Player of the Year and Player of the Game in the championship. Angel, who had two DeMatha

players guarding him at all times, still managed to break through for three assists. Him being double or triple teamed the whole game actually helped us get other guys open, Sothoron said. It was hard. It was a lot different than what I was used to, added Angel. But it caused a lot of players to step up and everyone played great. See WCAC Champs page B-4

La Plata Beats Chopticon With Walk-Off Home Run in Tenth

By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The Chopticon Braves baseball team saw its season come to an abrupt end Monday night in the second round of the regional playoffs when La Platas Michael Boyden hit a two run walk-off homer in the bottom of the tenth inning. The Braves played a tactical 10 innings at La Plata, making no errors defensively and fighting for all three of their runs. It was a game of inches, and neither team was willing to give up. After going up 3-2 in the top of the 10th, it looked as though Chopticon could be able to escape with a narrow win and advance in the playoffs, but the Warriors led off the bottom of the inning with a single, then moved their runner to second on a bunt. The next batter was Boyden, who was hitless until his final trip to the plate. I knew we didnt have a lot offense going, so I figured, if I get a pitch to hit, Im going to take advantage of it, Boyden said. It was just right there and I just jumped all over it. Boydens hit sailed deep over the fence in left field and gave La Plata a 4-3 win over the 11th seeded Braves. Its a tough loss, said Chopticon first baseman Jason Villa. We hate to lose in the playoffs like this. The kid hit a shot. La Plata, a three-seed, will go on to play Huntingtown, a two-seed, which just beat Great Mills, 11-1. It feels great because we lost to Huntingtown two times in regular season, they swept us, and were definitely trying to get back at them, said Boyden. Despite the loss, Chopticon coach Steve Williams was pleased with how his team played against the Warriors and how they came back from a slow start early on in the season. The team is really young. We only have three seniors on the field, Williams said. I told them to remember the feeling of what its like to end the season like this. Theyre more than capable of playing this kind of baseball I told them next year make sure that you guys remember this and begin the season See Chopticon page B-

Sophomore Davi Clark finished second Top performances included Brandon Demers second place finish in the mile and helped the 4x800m relay team to a second place finish, which came in less than three seconds behind first place Thomas Stone. He did a great job in the meet and he was probably our most outalst three or four meets. It was his best time of the year by about 10 seconds, Snyder said. It was just a phenomenal two-mile. As a sophomore, he has just kept improving the

In the Knowl
Whos In the Drivers Seat
By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer The score was 5-4. It was the bottom of the ninth inning. There were two outs. The count was full. The bases were loaded. Its a situation kids run over and over in their minds as they dream of one day hitting that game winning grand slam. This game didnt end that way. With a full count, bases loaded, two outs and down one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Bostons Julio Lugo hit a ground ball to Baltimore first baseman Kevin

The County Times

did Ray do? He dropped the ball before reaching first and the Red Sox scored two runs to win the game that was in the Os hands all day long. It was a terrible ending and there was no excuse for having lost that game. Especially because Lugo, should have been an easy first out when he led off the Red Sox with a pop up in Os the ninth, but Os catcher, Ramon Hernandez, dropped the ball. O.K. Its only one game out of 162. Whos counting? Plus, the Os are in second in the division, only behind the Red Sox (maybe the best team in the MLB). As I write this, the Os are ahead of the Yankees and one and a half games in front of Tampa Bay and Toronto and Im keeping my fingers crossed that it can stay that way until the end of the season. Starting Monday, the Os went on a three game road series against Toronto. That could be a very good thing. After that, Baltimore plays three at Washington. That could be a very good thing as well if youre an Orioles fan. Washington is the second worst team in the majors with a record of 12-25. Kansas City is not far behind with their whopping 12-26 record. The score was 3-3. It was the ninth inning. There were two outs. The bases were loaded. The game had been rain delayed for over three hours. Apart from that last fact, its a situation kids run over and over in their minds as they dream of one day hitting that game winning grand slam. This game ended that way. Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman stepped up to the plate and smashed a grand slam home run to win the game 7-3. Needless to say, It was a little more exciting than how the Os game ended. After losing eight straight

Section B -
games, the Nats swept Florida in a three game series. Thats all fine and dandy, but now the Nats enter a tough stretch of games, including a three game series against Atlanta (first place in NL East). After that, theyll face the Os. So although the Nationals are coming off three big wins and the Os are coming off a sad, sad loss, its the Orioles that are riding shotgun. I dont want to say theyre in the drivers seat. That would be Boston. The Yankees and Toronto are in the backseat and Tampa Bay, as usual, is wedged in between them. As far as the National League goes, the Braves and Mets are riding up front. Washington is somewhere on the side of the road with their thumbs raised -- just trying to catch a ride.

Millar. Yes! An easy out! Right? Apparently not. Millar fielded the ball and tossed it over to pitcher Chris Ray who was running to cover first. All Ray had to do was catch the ball and step on the bag and the game was over, the Os would escape with their second win in three games against the Red Sox. But what

One of our big things weve had this year is speed over other teams and they matched us on that, he said. They played fast, they played well disciplined and transitioned the ball and everything. Thats a team that weve never seen before and they play a whole different style than anybody in SMAC, added Aicher. They play a faster paced game. In the fourth quarter, the Raiders really turned it on. Aicher recorded his first goal early in the fourth quarter and then scored another at the 3:47 mark. I think if we had another quarter we would have won the game or at least tied it up, said Aicher. We started lighting the goal up, finding the open guy, we were doing everything right. Everything that we learned all year started happening in the fourth quarter. Leonardtowns offense controlled the ball for most of the fourth quarter and their defense completely shut down the Panthers. One of the challenges we put before the defense is this is a faster team than weve played and we need to play better in the second than we did the first and play better in the fourth as we did the third, and they did that, said Chew. We just got better and better as the game went along. Goalie Mitchell Kanowicz, who came into the game in the third quarter, did not allow a single ball to get past

him. Mitchell had a hell of a game, said Aicher. He went in there and after he got that first save, he started getting pumped up. I dont know how he did it. It was amazing. With two minutes to go, junior attacker Stephen Norris scored his first goal of the game to cut Annapolis lead to three. They kind of upped the pressure a little bit and we didnt respond, said Annapolis coach Joe Keenan said. After winning the ensuing face off, the Panthers called a time out and devised a plan to hold the ball until the end of the game. The plan worked for Annapolis, as they moved the ball around for the last two minutes of the game and walked off with a 9-6 win and a trip to the playoff semifinals. The last two minutes, Ill Leonardtown walks off the field after the loss with their heads held high. tell you what, that made up for everything because we half, we would have tied that controlled the ball completely game up and came at them, within the box and didnt let Chew said. go of it, Keenan said. Sports
SMAC Champs
Continued from page B- By Andrew Knowlton Staff Writer Four years ago, when Chopticon girls lacrosse coach Judith Evans first signed on to lead the Lady Braves, the program had never had a winning record. In her first season, Chopticon went .500. The next year, five sophomores, who are now seniors and critical components of the team, were moved up to varsity, and the Braves had their first winning season in school history and went on to win a Regional Championship. In Evans third year, Chopticon finished second in the conference. This season, in Evans fourth year as head coach, the Lady Braves had a 12-3 overall record and won their first SMAC championship in school history. According to Evans, winning the conference was one of two of her most memorable moments of the year. Beating Leonardtown and remaining undefeated in SMAC meant we controlled our own destiny for a SMAC championship, Evans said. Going into their final game of the regular season and facing rivals Leonardtown, the Braves were in a winwin situation. If they beat the Raiders, they were conference champions, and if they lost to the Raiders, they would share the title. Although the Raiders managed to win a hard-fought game 6-5 in the last 23 seconds, Chopticon earned their first conference title ever. Danielle Ostrowski, Becky Gailey, Charlotte Butters, Breanne Russell and Krista Lanehart all scored goals in the game for Chopticon. Another highlight for the Braves this season was their 14-6 road win over Pikesville April 28. I have never seen the girls play so well, Evans said. They played a complete game. It was fun to watch. In four years, Chopticon has made its mark as a successful program with some of the top players around. The team has been successful because of hard work, dedication and working together as a team, Evans said. Our goal is to keep improving every year. Weve established a winning tradition. Evans says her senior leaders have played a critical role in building that tradition. Those players are middie Jenn Allison, Russell, defender Shara Stone, Ostrowksi and goalie Amanda Yates. These five seniors have been instrumental in the success of our program, Evans said. They have done a fantastic job leading by example. Chopticons 12-3 record on the season helped them earn a top seed in the 4A-3A Regional Playoffs and they enjoyed a bye in the first round. In the second round, the Braves fell to No. 9 seed Chesapeake, which went on to beat Leonardtown as well. In 2005, the Lady Braves defeated top-seeded Leonardtown in the 3A-2A East Regional Championship game and went on to win the title and compete in the state semifinals.

WCAC Champs
Continued from page B- Taylor Cook had four goals and Kyle Yates had three, while Bray Dunaway and Tyler Spaulding each notched two. Yates three goals came on just three shots and Spaulding only took two shots to score his two goals. DeMatha did everything in their power to stop Zach, and they did a pretty good job, but it just goes to show that were still good enough to beat them. Sothoron said the Knights were a little nervous early in the game while DeMatha seemed to be playing with a little more confidence. DeMathas been on the big stage and under the lights before, so they knew how to handle the situation, Sothoron said. We were a little nervous during the warm-ups and I think we made some uncharacteristic mistakes because of the nerves.

It was definitely a big change, going into the big stadium and playing in front of the big crowd. It was hard to adjust, added Angel. Still, the Knights held a slim 7-6 lead over the Stags at halftime. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Knights were able to break away to a 13-10 lead, but DeMatha came back and cut the deficit to one with about 20 second left. The Stags made several attempts at the net in the last seconds of the game but were unsuccessful. After losing their first two games of the season, Ryken went on to win 19 in

a row, including a 17-8 win over DeMatha on April 24. To get to the finals, St. Marys beat Good Counsel 13-7. Dunaway scored four goals in that game, Cook had three and Reggie Harvey and Angel each scored two. Sophomore Addison Goodley and junior Brett Schnidt contributed one apiece. After finally breaking out of their three-year losing slump in the semifinals, the Knights were ecstatic. Were going crazy, Dunaway said after the game. Its a great experience. We lost three years in a row. Last year really hurt. Weve got great coaches and a

great team. The Knights were well aware that DeMatha (14-7) would be a very tough opponent, according to head coach John Sothoron. DeMatha is on a roll, he said after the Good Counsel game. They just crushed Gonzaga. It was 14-4 in the fourth quarter and I think Gonzaga got four cheap ones at the end. So theyve been blowing people out. Going into the championship, the Knights plan was to stick to what theyd been doing all year. Were not changing anything, John Sothoron said after winning the semifinals. Were just trying to re-

fine everything and not make mistakes in the game. Weve been winning all year long with good play and were not going to change that. After winning the title, Jay Sothoron told his returning players that he has high expectations for them next season. Were the defending champs now. They know what to expect and we want to defend that title.

The Ryken Knights celebrate after winning the WCAC Championship. They beat DeMatha 13-12 to end the Stags eight-year run as conference champs.

Kids Corner
Heres How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

early believing in yourselves Im happy with the way they one point in the season and Huntingtown. But the Braves still had to face tough SMAC won four of their next five rather than waiting until the turned the season around. Chopticon was 5-8-1 at teams such as Northern and games and were able to finend of the season. But overall ish the season with a 10-10-1 record. The Braves have not had a losing record in the last seven seasons, according to Williams. We started off slow but we came on stronger in the end and were happy with the way we played in the last two weeks of the season, said Villa. Next year well have to try to start off where we were at the end of this season. Villa had a strong game for Chopticon, hitting two crucial base hits late in the game. To lead off the sixth inning, Villa hit a standup double down the left field line and was later driven home by right fielder Chris Bruce, who hit a line drive single to center field, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the inning, La Plata loaded the bases and scored a run on an infield hit, which almost resulted in a double play for Chopticon. With runners at the corners, Braves pitcher Roy Maddox made a play that got Chopticon out of a tough situation. We relayed the play in, said Williams. We knew they were going to be bunting in that situation. Maddox faked a pick-off throw to first and then spun around to throw the ball to first, getting La Platas runner on first in a run down and eventually tagging him out to end the inning. Neither team scored until the top of the 10th, when the Braves managed to take

a 3-2 lead. With one out, center fielder James Newsome struck out but reached first on a passed ball. Villa then moved Newsome to third on a single. I felt good today. I hit a couple in the gaps and was able to get on base, Villa said. Villa stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Chopticon. Left fielder Matt Nauman then drove in a run with a single to left field, giving his team a one run lead. Nauman stole second as well, but was later caught in between second and third on a grounder by Jonathan Nagy. That out ended the inning. Offensively on the bases we hurt ourselves, said Williams. Its been kind of our Achilles heel all year is mental mistakes on the base paths, so it shouldnt be a surprise that we end this way. Williams said his teams approach to the game was very similar to La Platas. We both were trying to play small ball, he said. Neither team was hitting the ball exceptionally well. When these two teams met earlier in the season, they played nine innings and only scored one run. They seem to have a lot of everything, Boyden said of Chopticon. They do what we do. They put runs on the board when they need to, they play defense, and they have decent pitching.
