St. Marys Colleges Marc DiPasquale was named Division III face-off win percentage champion by the NCAA earlier this week.

Indianapolis, Ind. Rising senior Marc DiPasquale (Joppa, Md./Boys Latin) is the 2008 NCAA Division III statistical champion for face-off win percentage as announced by the NCAA after the final statistical rankings were released. DiPasquale won 226 of 325

face-offs for a .695 percentage to be the top face-off specialist in Division III. He took all but 30 face-offs for the Seahawks in 2008. The 5-8 midfielder also finished 34th in the nation with 5.73 ground balls per game as DiPasquale led the team with 86 See DiPasquale page B-2

As a sophomore, DiPasquale was fourth in the nation with a .680 (193 of 284) face-off percentage, while ranking third as a freshman in 2006 with a .712 (247 of 347) percentage. DiPasquale is a two-time AllCapital Athletic Conference (CAC) selection, including earning first team honors to cap off his junior

campaign this season. He is also a two-time Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Yearbook preseason All-America pick. St. Marys finished the 2008 campaign with a 7-8 overall record and a 5-2 mark in league action. The Seahawks fell 7-4 to the University of Mary Washington in the CAC Quarterfinals.

an understatement. Belden, who improved to 3-17 with the convincing win, rapped 10 hits in the top of the first inning, with 11 men crossing the plate in their half of the frame. And that was just the tip of the iceberg. After the Bud Light defense collected the first two outs in the top of the second with minimal damage, Belden scored 11 of their 13 runs in the inning with the benefit of just one out left at bat. The two-out charge included a towering threerun home run over the left-centerfield fence by third baseman Steven Hawks that made the score 18-0, erasing all doubt about the games outcome. Belden hammered out 31 hits to account for their 28 runs, while the Bud Light team collected 14 hits and had eight runners cross the plate before the game was halted one inning short of a full game.

A View From The Bleachers

Marylands Shooting Star

Guy Jr. Contributing Writer Leonardtown MD, 19 June 1986: A 13-yr-old boy was enjoying his summer vacation like many of his classmates, basking in the afterglow of his graduation from grade school and nervously anticipating the beginning of high school later that summer. There was no reason to think this day would start with anything other than a casual awakening from a long nights sleep sometime in late morning, ideally just in time for The Price Is Right. But this day had other plans. Sometime shortly after the ungodly teenage hour of 9am, the boys little sister, knowing her brother was an endless sports fan, burst opened the bedroom door and asked flatly, Do you know someone named Len Bias? The boy, clearly irritated both at the ignorance and timing of such a question, snapped, Uhhh, yeah, hes only the greatest player in Terps basketball history! Little sisters innocent and unforgettable reply: Hes dead. Its hard to do Len Bias, the basketball player, justice with words. Time has faded the memories of those who saw him and the two decades since his death have given rise to a generation of sports fan who only know the name and the legend. Bias was a taller, stronger and equally athletic version of Michael Jordan. Im sure many will scoff at such a casual comparison to His Airness. So Ill defer to legendary coach Mike Krzyzewski who, when asked to name some opposing players who stood out in his twoplus decades as head coach of Duke University named two: Michael Jordan and Len Bias. He wasnt just the best player in Maryland basketball history; hes on any reputable list of the greatest players in the history of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). After four stellar years at Maryland, Bias was the 2nd overall pick in the 1986 NBA Draft. Two days later, with a blindingly bright future before him, he died in a Maryland dorm room of cocaine intoxication. Every year since, when the calendar flips to June and with another edition of the NBA Draft pending, Bias slips back into our consciousness, either from our own internal clock cueing his memory or from an inevitable mention during NBA Draft coverage. This year felt eerily familiar. Like 1986, Boston won the NBA championship before this years Draft, its first title since Bias death. Its almost as if it took the Celtics 22 years to recover from the tragic loss of their next great player. Bias could have been the bridge from the Larry Bird era into the next great period in Celtic lure. He could have been Bostons answer to Chicagos Jordan. He could have been Bias has been dead now longer than he lived, yet this ghost of a man still compels us to ask, What could have been? Its almost as if were expecting, at any minute now, that chiseled, 22-yr-old Lenny Bias to run out of the tunnel and appear on the parquet floor of Boston Garden to answer that question. But Lens gone and he left far too

early. Recalling the death of Len Bias means different things to different people. For the non-sports fan it was at least a terrible waste, the loss of a young life with so much promise left unrealized. For me, it was the loss of my childhood sports hero. I was that 13-year-old boy whose little sister woke him on that fateful June morning 22 years ago. Never again would I, or likely any my peers, view sports through a childs innocent eyes again. Suddenly it was a world of big business, big money and endless temptation. In death Bias left us with a lesson that couldnt have been taught as well in life. Believe what you will about Bias drug use. The naysayers will allege a young man losing control, succumbing to a temptation accompanying his sudden fortune and fame. Ive heard enough from reliable sources to believe his cocaine use was a rare, if not an isolated incident, an example of a young man who suddenly had it all, believed himself invincible, got caught up in the moment and made a tragic mistake. The death of Len Bias taught me all I needed to know about drug use and cocaine. For the young today, for who Bias is but a myth, heed his warning. Here was a man of unrivaled strength and athleticism who

performed super-human feats on the basketball court. Yet in death he proved as fragile, as human, as any of us. The same heart that carried him tirelessly through so many epic on-court battles was the same heart that gave out under the strain of excessive cocaine use. It wasnt cumulative; there was no gradual disintegration. It took but one bad decision. One bad decision and in a blink a shooting star faded to black. That is Len Bias legacy, his lesson. The young are naturally carefree, even reckless at times. There are moments in a young persons life when they are confronted with circumstances that offer very divergent paths. Perhaps its a high school or college party, where peers are experimenting, as young folks often do, with sex, alcohol or drugs. Maybe its a decision to drive or rely on a sober friend to get home after a few at the local bar. These are moments when Len Bias memory can speak to us. In these moments, he has never been far from my mind. Len Bias taught me it takes only one lapse in judgment and any of us, even those that seem immortal to impressionable young eyes, can leave behind loved ones pondering that same question Maryland basketball fans have been asking for 22 years:

What might have been? Brian Tribble placed the 911 call the morning of Bias death. He pleaded with the dispatcher; This is Len Biasyou have to get him back to lifetheres no way he can die. His pitiful, desperate voice captured the enormity of this possible tragedy. But the unthinkable happened: Bias did die. And in death he became a cautionary tale, for countless future generations, of the price of a reckless decision. Rest peacefully Lenyour lesson lives on, but damn I still miss you. Extra Innings: He began walking on September 16th, 2007 in New York City. After ten months, 24 pairs of shoes and 40lbs lost on the way, he stopped on June 21st, 2008in San Diego, CA. Former New York Giants Defensive Tackle George Martin walked across America and raised $2 million to benefit the first responders to the terrorist attacks in New York on September 11th, 2001, many of whom are experiencing health problems from exposure to the toxic dust prevalent in the aftermath of the attacks. Aside from the offense clicking, the Bud Light defense turned three double plays that prevented SWAT from getting any momentum going when they did have runners on base.

Red Cross Disaster Services Recruiting Volunteers to Operate Local Disaster Relief Call Center
The American Red Cross is the only non-governmental organization mandated by the U.S. Congress to alleviate human suffering of victims of disasters such as fires, floods, hurricanes, and technological and transportation crises. To continue its humanitarian mission for support of over 20 ongoing disasters inn the United States, Southern Maryland Chapter has activated its Disaster Relief Call Center in La Plata. We are recruiting people who want to make a difference as a volunteer and help people directly in the affected disaster areas without having to go to that location. With todays technology we can effectively complete the Red Cross mission anywhere in the US without leaving Southern Maryland, said Mike Zabko, CEO of the Southern Maryland Chapter. Volunteer recruitment is an ongoing effort. It is essential that we have trained responders. During a disaster is not the right time to find out we are not prepared! Zabko continued. This ten-station center is one of only 28 call centers in the nation. All calls will come in from the American Red Cross hotline, 1-866-GETINFO, and a call agent (Red Cross Volunteers) will provide information, referrals and relief support to individuals and Red Cross units affected by disaster. Were proud to have the opportunity to directly serve those affected by a disaster in another part of the country, said Mike Zabko, CEO of the chapter. We may get calls from hurricane-damaged areas in Florida or from fire ravaged California and many other disasters across the United States. Progressive Farmer Farm And Family Safety Day

Learn how to play it safe. The Progressive Farmer Magazine Farm and Family Safety Day will be held at the St. Marys County Fairgrounds July 11, 8:30 a.m. till 3 p.m. The event is in its 12th year of teaching rural safety awareness to the children of southern Maryland. This years event will feature basic first aid/summer health; farm equipment and tractor safety, ATV safety, water safety, firearms safety and hidden home hazards. This national program is supported locally by the Farm Bureau, St. Marys County Fair Association, St. Marys Hospital/Health Connections, St. Marys County Health Department, St. Marys Agriculture Seafood Commission, and Maryland Cooperative Extension - St. Marys County. Progressive Farmer magazine supplies a free tee shirt for each child and conducts annual training workshops for event directors. The camp has traditionally been for youth aged 6 through 13, but this year health screenings in the Health Connections van will be available to adults also. SMECO Truck to Aid Local Red Cross

Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative (SMECO) recently donated a service truck to the Southern Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross to help the organization improve its ability to respond to disasters. The relief organization received a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 that the Cooperative retired from its fleet of vehicles. This is especially good for those who want to help with a national disaster, but for what ever reason cannot deploy for a three-week assignment, added Zabko. COSMIC Symphony, is recruiting musicians for the 2008-2009 Season

COSMIC Symphony begins its 13th season, under the direction of world renowned conductor, Vladimir Lande, with performances on October 25th & 26th, followed by two Dec. 7th performances of Tchaikovskys The Nutcracker with Donetsk Ballet of the Ukraine, the Family Concerts February 28th & March 1st and the Season Finale concerts on May 16th and 17th. Performances are on Saturdays in St. Marys County at 7 p.m. and Sundays in Calvert County at 4 p.m. Anyone interested in joining the symphony is welcome to audition. COSMIC Symphony is currently in need of clarinet, violin, viola, string bass, and trombone instrumentalists. As we are a non-governmental organization, we rely on community partners like SMECO to help us provide Red Cross services to our community, said Mike Zabko, chief executive officer of the Red Cross chapter. This vehicle will allow us to move our trailers and

other assets directly to the disaster locations in Southern Maryland when and if the need arises. We continue to need other organizations to emulate the partnership we have with SMECO. Each year, SMECO employees donate their personal time to benefit a charity in the Cooperatives service area. During the yearlong effort, SMECO employees participate in activities to raise funds for the charity. The Southern Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross is the Cooperatives charity for 2008.

Mechanicsville E.S. Student Council And Benjamin Banneker E.S. Recognized With The Sherry Unger Award
On June 18, 2008, the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) awarded both Mechanicsville Elementary School Student Council and Benjamin Banneker Elementary School the Sherry Unger Award. This accomplishment recognizes projects that exemplify the best practices of service learning by addressing a community need, developing student leadership, and establishing community partnerships. In addition to receiving recognition for their outstanding service to the community, each schools project will be featured on the MSDE service-learning webpage and they will receive $300 to use for future service-learning projects. The Mechanicsville Elementary School Student Council project was called Operation Red Carpet. The students worked with the Patuxent River Naval Base to develop posters and patriotic gift bags to recognize and welcome home local naval personnel who completed their oversea tour in Iraq, Afghanistan, or Cuba. Benjamin Banneker Elementary School developed a partnership with the Habitat for Humanity to assist the non-profit organization with purchasing supplies. To accomplish this task, the students implemented a can recycling program, and increased awareness about ways to improve the environment. This student initiative collected over 622 pounds of cans and increased student civic engagement.

On June 10, 2008 Assistant Sheriff, John David Horne, completed the Executive Development Institute Leadership Challenge Pro-

gram. Leadership Challenge Program participants met once a month, eight hours, for ten months. Participants are divided into work group. Each work group is given a challenge to research and present a topic. The topic must address a public service area or concern in Maryland and provide a collective benefit in combating executive and management related issues. Every month a different work group presented a topic during

the training session. The topics included Emergency Preparedness, Transportation, Elderly, Media, Maryland Government, Maritime Industry, Human Services, Securing Critical Infrastructures and Economic Development. The training sessions were held at various locations throughout the State of Maryland. John Horne was appointed to the position of Assistant Sheriff, December 5, 2006 after the election of Timothy K.

The Leonardtown TAG (Teen Advisory Group) invites teens, ages 12-18, to a showing of the Indiana Jones trilogy. Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark will be shown on July 10 at 5:30 p.m. following a brief TAG meeting. The other two movies will be shown on July 24 and August 7. Charlotte Halls TAG meeting will be July 10 at 5 p.m.

Kids can become superheroes

Children, ages 7-11, will make Kryptonite, create comic superheroes and solve the Riddlers riddles at the free superheroes programs scheduled today at 10 a.m. at Charlotte Hall and at 2 p.m. at Leonardtown. Lexington Parks program will be July 23 at 2 p.m. Registration is requested.

Special program highlights Maryland animals

St. Clements Island Museum staff will present Maryland Animals Great & Small on July 16 at each branch. Children, ages five and up, can register to attend at 10 a.m. at Charlotte Hall, at 12:30 p.m. at Leonardtown or 3 p.m. at Lexington Park. The program is free, but space is limited.

Assistant Sheriff Horne began his career with the St. Marys County Sheriffs Office, in December of 1985 after an honorable discharge from the United States Navy. During his time with the agency he has served in every division within the Sheriffs Office, Patrol, Investigations, Special Operations as both a working member and as a Division Commander, with the only exception being the Corrections Division. Assistant Sheriff Horne has further been a member and spent several years as part of the different specialty groups within the agency, Dive Team, Emergency Services Team, Color Guard and Polygraph Examiner as both an operator and Team Leader. Assistant Sheriff Horne is a Graduate of LaSalle University and received a B.S. in Criminal Justice Management April 2000. Assistant Sheriff Horne is a graduate of the 206th Session of the FBIs National Academy and is a member of the FBIs National Academy Associates, the American Polygraph Association, Maryland Polygraph Association and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #7.

The book discussion group at Leonardtown Library will be celebrating its 10th year anniversary on July 17 at 7 p.m. Dr. Robin Bates, English Professor at St. Marys College will lead the discussion of Cormac McCarthys book, No Country for Old Men. Geraldine Brooks book, Year of Wonder, will be discussed at Lexington Park on July 14 at 6 p.m. Sara Gruens book, Water for Elephants, will be discussed at Charlotte Hall on August 4 at 7 p.m.

Traffic stop nets weapons, suspected marijuana

On July 3, 2008 at approximately 6:24 pm Senior Deputy First Class Clay Safford stopped a 1994 Dodge van for a traffic violation. The occupants of the van made several suspicious movements. These suspicious movements caused Safford concern for his safety. Safford contacted the driver, Jacob Andrew Zitnick, 22, of California and asked him to step from the vehicle. Once outside the vehicle, Safford asked Zitnick if he had any weapons in the vehicle. Zitnick responded yes there was an axe blade between the front two seats. Additional deputies

arrived on the scene and the occupant, Casey WoodrowConley Allan, 22, of Tall Timbers was asked to step from the vehicle. Once Zitnick and Allan were out of the vehicle Safford searched between the seats to retrieve the axe blade. While retrieving the axe blade Safford discovered between the seats a bag of suspected marijuana and two controlled dangerous substance smoking devices. Both Zitnick and Allan were arrested. Further search of the vehicle revealed a Ruger .22 caliber automatic pistol, a .357 magnum revolver, a Winchester 12 gauge shotgun, a box of .303 rifle cartridges, .22 caliber handgun round and .38 handgun shell casings. Zitnick and Allan were charged with two

counts of transporting a handgun in a vehicle, possession of marijuana and possession of controlled dangerous substance paraphernalia.

Police nab burglary suspect after fleeing

On July 4, 2008 Deputy Scott Ruest responded to a residence on Valley Court for a check welfare call. Deputy Ruest contacted the victim and was told Wayne Aloyious Jordan, Jr.,18, of Lexington Park broke into and entered her residence by kicking the door. The victim stated the defendant believed he was owed money and came to the residence to collect the money. When he was refused en-

trance into the residence, Jordan allegedly broke into and entered the residence damaging the front door frame. Jordan fled the residence prior to the arrival of deputies and was located a short time later, arrested and charged with 3rd degree burglary and destruction of property.

Suspect in hitand-run accident arrested

On July 6, 2008 Deputy Scott Ruest was investigating a hit and run accident, with a red sedan being the suspect vehicle. A witness placed the red sedan at a residence near where the accident occurred.

Ruest responded to the residence where the suspect vehicle, a red 1992 Toyota Corolla, 4 door sedan, was located and spoke with the owner of the vehicle, Stanley Paul Drummond, 43 of California. The Toyota Corolla had damage consistent with the damage involved in the hit and run accident. Drummond denied driving the vehicle and denied being involved in an accident. Further investigation and witness statements placed Drummond driving the vehicle in the area and time of the accident. A motor vehicle check revealed there was no current registration for the Toyota Corolla and Drummond did not have a current valid license to operate a motor vehicle in Maryland. Drummond was

arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle without a license, driving a motor vehicle without current registration and leaving the scene of a property damage accident. Once at the detention center Drummond insisted on reporting the 1992 Toyota Corolla stolen, claiming someone stole his vehicle and wrecked it. Ruest explained to Drummond the evidence indicated he was the operator of the vehicle and was the one involved in the hit and run accident. Drummond continued to insist his vehicle was stolen and he wanted to report it stolen. With no evidence Drummonds 1992 Toyota was stolen, police asserted, he was charged with making a false report of a crime.
