Franklin & Marshall College History

Franklin & Marshall College is a private co-educational liberal arts college in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. It is the 25th oldest institution for higher education, as well as the 17th oldest college in the United States. It began as two separate institutions. Franklin College was established in 1787 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and was named for Benjamin Franklin, who donated 200. The schools rst courses were taught in both English and German, making it the rst bilingual college in the United States. Franklin College was also Americas rst coeducational institution, with its rst class of students composed of 78 men and 36 women. Marshall College was previously founded as a classical school. It became a University in 1936 and it was named for the fourth Chief Justice of the United States John Marshall, who had died the previous year. 1899 saw the formation of the colleges rst theatre group, the Franklin & Marshall Dramatic Association, which was renamed The Green Room Club a year later. F&M alumni who have performed

on the Green Room stage include Oscar-winning lm director Franklin J. Schaffner and actors Roy Scheider and Treat Williams. Since its inception, sports has always played an active part at Franklin & Marshall. The studentrun Alpha Club sponsored the rst Baseball game, while historically, the rst and oldest fraternity at F&M College remains Phi Kappa Sigma founded October 13, 1854. The rst sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma, was only chartered in 1978. During the rst half of the 20th millennium all institutions of higher education faced an enrolment crisis because most young people in the US were joining the military. The college began a rapid period of growth after World War I. The schools sports teams are called the Diplomats, giving F&M students the nickname, Dips. In 1900 the rst basketball match was played against Millersville Normal School. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. visited the campus on December 12, 1963 to speak about civil rights. During these years the student body was very racially diverse and students were engaged in a breathtaking array of activities that ranged

from politics to music to drama to science and hobbies. In 1976, the Steinman College Centre was constructed. The buildingdesigned by Minoru Yamasaki, architect of New Yorks World Trade Centreoriginally housed the campus bookstore and post ofce. Today it houses the College Reporter, the Oriamme Yearbook, the College Entertainment Committee, the Phillips Museum of Art, Pandinis (a popular restaurant) and the campus radio station WFNM. In 2003 the school celebrated the sesquicentennial of the union between Franklin College and Marshall College. That same year, The Princeton Reviews The Best 351 Colleges rated F&M best in the country for the accessibility of its faculty.
