Instructions:
This assignment is to be carried two students in a group. The assignment is to be submitted in two formats: hard copy (printed and bound report), and soft copy (on CD).

The objective of this assignment is: To apply material learned in real world situation which learned from the lecture and also gain experience by the application of several methods for producing electric power. To conduct energy audit in a building and apply the relative tariff for energy consumption and energy costs.

PART A: 20%

You will work as a class in a team to arrange a technical visit to power plant. Since you will be working as a team, I would recommend appointing one person to be team coordinator, mainly to help set meeting times, facilitate decision-making and keep track of who is doing what. Please follow the below task given: Task 1: Describe the identified technologies which have to use for the Genting Sanyen Power Plant Task 2: Develop a Plant of Work I will approve the Plans of Work, and you will immediately begin work on your study. On mid of semester (week 7) we will have a plan review in class where each sub-team or individual will stand up to briefly explain A status report of progress on their part of the visit Any technical challenges they are facing Any problems finding/vetting resources Finally prepare two pages of technical report which includes introduction, the process of the power plant, session covered in the sharing and conclusion. Please attach pictures in CD. Grading: Final Report (10%) team grade

Final Team work (10%) by individual grade. PART B: 80% Energy audits are a systematic study or survey to identify how energy is being used in buildings. Using this information, it is also possible to list how the energy was used according to the various processes in various outlets of a building. By identifying the potential for energy savings accurately, the energy consumption can be reduced. You are required to determine the electrical energy consumption using energy audit on buildings and suggest a few savings methods to reduce the electricity consumption inside the buildings. You may choose any one of the following building options in order to meet your second objective. Used an appropriate current tariff accordingly and estimate the monthly energy cost. Option 1: Option 2: any one Option 3: Conduct energy audit in any three types of residential units such as hostel, semi-detached house, bungalow-house or a village house. Conduct energy audit in any three types of rooms, which include lecture room without LCD, lecture room with LCD, Lecture Theater and of lecturer room of the Faculty of Engineering. Conduct energy audit in any three difference discipline laboratories operating in Faculty of Engineering such as Electrical, Electronics, Mechatronics, Mechanical and Civil Laboratories. Conduct energy audit in any three types of shops that is operating in the university campus. These may includes mini supermarket, book store, laundry, or clinic, restaurants and others. Conduct energy audit in any three operating offices. These could be administration, academic, staff lounge, meeting rooms, or others.

Option 4:

Option 5:

For this part of the assignment, you will keep a record of the different appliances was used and how long and how often they use them. Calculate the amount of electrical energy that is used by each appliance in a week and record the items used in the building. All appliances should be recorded. Some appliance ratings are listed on the back of the appliance. Parental permission must be obtained before appliances are moved. It is very important to be safe. If appliances should be moved, make sure they are unplugged. Keep metal objects from the outlets and make sure water does not come in contact with the outlets. Describe in details the following aspects: 1. Data collection In this energy audit you are focusing on explanation of the all the appliances used in the chosen option which you need to record in the tables. Create a well organized data table which makes daily records of electricity usage for all devices. Another table correctly shows information on the appliance, its energy

source, and primary use, hours used per week, volts, amps, watts and kilowatthours for all devices. 2. Energy calculation This section includes analysis on energy cost in a week. Explain in details the process of computing energy consumption with an appropriate tariff and formulae that employed in the computation. Compute the estimated monthly energy consumption and energy cost. You may include some figures, diagram and table to support your analysis. Include also any assumption made during the study. 3. . Results and Discussion Electrical energy consumption in buildings can be divided into three categories namely air conditioning, general lighting and general equipments. Create easy-toread graphs that are neat, accurate, and clearly labeled. Make a thorough, well organized presentation and displays well designed graph and visual aids. You may construct pie-chart to present the energy consumption. Identify which appliances or equipments contribute to higher energy usages. Suggest few methods how you can measure energy savings in the chosen building option. Assessment Criteria: 100% a. Report format. General Formatting Requirements of Report Marks will be allocated for proper formatting, which includes these Report must have introduction, section headers and summary. Pages of the report must be properly numbered. Report must have a cover page and a table of contents page. All figures and tables must have a title. Properly citing sources of information using the Harvard Name System of Referencing (http://iskillzone.uwe.ac.uk/) The report should be minimum 10 and maximum 25 pages of main text body (excluding title page, table of contents, list of tables and figures, list of abbreviations, list of references and appendices if any). 10%
