1.0 INTRODUCTION
Since its inception over twenty-five years ago, Computalog Ltd. has been a leader in various areas of oilfield service technologies. Computalog Ltd.s Drilling Motor Department has been developing, manufacturing, and servicing down-hole drilling motors for over fifteen years and is constantly working on new technologies that will surpass past performances. Computalog Commander drilling motors have been proven to be extremely reliable with operational experience surpassing 65,000 hours per year. Computalog Ltd.s professional team applies extensive drilling experience and technical skill to the design and maintenance of their high performance drilling motors. Feedback from field operations and extensive performance monitoring in combination with an accurate component history database allows for optimum engineering analysis in all matters of performance. All possible measures including thorough component testing are taken to ensure product quality to our customers. Enclosed are the specifications for the variety of drilling motors that Computalog Ltd. currently has available. Drilling motor components, operation, applications, performance characteristics, and limitations are all discussed thoroughly. Other drilling motor styles will become available over time, expanding on the range of performance characteristics of Computalog Commander drilling motors. In the event that an issue dealing with this equipment has not been addressed, or some information is missing, please contact your nearest Computalog Ltd. representative.
E - Extended or Performance Drilling Motor - The power section of the extended or performance drilling motor is longer than the power section of the standard drilling motor, providing greater torque capacity at a similar output speed range. Build rate capacity of these styles of drilling motors is reduced due to increased length of the drilling motor. N - Standard Drilling Motor / Regular Length - These are the original Computalog Commander I, II and III drilling motors. These drilling motors have standard length power sections. S - Short Radius Drilling Motor - The drilling motor has been specifically designed to perform drilling of short radius wellbores. The bearing section of the drilling motor has a reduced bit to bend length, and the power section is short to allow higher build rates.
3.0 COMPONENTS
All Computalog Commander drilling motors consist of five major assemblies: 1. Dump Sub Assembly, 2. Power Section, 3. Drive Assembly, 4. Adjustable Assembly, and 5. Sealed Bearing Section.
The second control on power section output characteristics is length. A stage is defined as a full helical rotation of the lobed stator. Therefore, power sections may be classified in stages. A four stage power section contains one more full rotation to the stator elastomer, when compared to a three stage. With more stages, the power section is capable of greater overall pressure differential, which in turn provides more torque to the rotor. As mentioned above, these two design characteristics can be used to control the output characteristics of any size power section. This allows for the modular design of Computalog Commander drilling motors making it possible to simply replace power sections when different output characteristics are required. In addition, the variation of dimensions and materials will allow for specialized drilling conditions. With increased temperatures, or certain drilling fluids, the stator elastomer will expand and form a tighter seal onto the rotor and create more of an interference fit, which may result in stator elastomer damage. Computalog Commander drilling motors are available when requested with stators that take these conditions into account. This will result in minimal loss in performance for Computalog Commander drilling motors used in these specialized conditions.

The drive assembly also provides a point in the drive line that will compensate for the bend in the drilling motor required for directional control.
3.7 STABILIZATION
Bearing housings are also available with two stabilization styles, integral blade and screw-on. The integral blade style is built directly onto the bearing housing and thus cannot be removed in the field. The screw-on style provides the option of installing a threaded stabilizer sleeve onto the drilling motor on the rig floor in a matter of minutes. The drilling motor has a thread on the bottom end that is covered with a thread protector sleeve when not required. Both of these styles are optional to a standard slick bearing housing.

4.0 APPLICATIONS
The versatility and variety of Computalog Commander drilling motors allows it to be used in several different downhole applications. As the variety of designs expand, the applications that Computalog Commander drilling motors can operate in will also grow.

It is recommended that when operating Computalog Commander drilling motors with air, or any other compressible fluid, that a lubricating fluid be added to the system. As stated earlier, the interference between the rotor and the stator creates small cavities along their length. As each cavity moves down the length of the power section from the rotation of the rotor, the cavity volume remains the same. However, for there to be a pressure change in the air as the cavity progresses (which is required for torque generation), the volume must also change. Therefore, as the cavity progresses, the pressure will drop for torque development, and the volume of the air will increase. This increase in air volume results in blow-by of the power section at the bottom end, which will potentially damage the stator. The purpose of a lubricating fluid is to help lubricate the surfaces between the rotor and stator of the power section, as well as provide some cooling assistance to reduce this blow-by damage. As the amount of lubricating fluid is decreased, wear to the rubber will increase, significantly reducing the life of the drilling motor. When operating a Computalog Commander drilling motor with air, care should be taken not let it run freely at any time. This will cause the rotor to spin at rates beyond what it was designed for, wearing it out prematurely. When starting the drilling motor, some weight on bit should be applied before flow is stabilized at the required drilling rate. This will provide some resistance to the rotor in the stator and prevent it from over-running. Similarly, when stopping drilling, some weight on bit should be maintained until there is no pressure drop across the drilling motor. Failing to do so will cause premature stator wear, as well as possibly cause an internal joint to fracture or back-off. Stalling out the drilling motor can also cause extensive wear quickly to the stator. When stall occurs, the rotor will seal off with the stator, causing the air pressure inside the drill string to gradually increase. When the drilling motor is raised, the seal between the rotor and stator will give, and the air will pass through. However, since the pressure is higher, and the flow rate has increased beyond the capacity of the power section, the rotor will spin over allowable limits and the stator will wear out in a short period of time. When stalling occurs, it is not easily identifiable with a pressure increase at surface. As the drilling medium is compressible, the stall will not be immediately noticed. Therefore, the ROP should be used as a gauge for stalling. If the ROP drops off excessively, it should be considered an indication that the drilling motor has stalled. Another concern when using a compressible fluid to power a drilling motor is explosive decompression. This is especially the case for nitrogen gas. When the drilling motor is being operated downhole, gases permeate into the rubber components. The amount of gases that permeate into the rubber are increased by higher pressures being applied, and longer periods of use. However, this initial absorption of gases does not affect drilling motor performance. Once the drilling motor is being pulled out of hole, the pressure on the rubber component is greatly

decreased, allowing the gases to expand and coalesce within the rubber. This creates blistering of the rubber, and possibly leads to chunking, affecting the integrity of the drilling motor. In wells where the drilling motor is expected to see pressures above 10,000 kPa (1450 psi), explosive decompression is possible when pulling out of hole. To minimize this effect, the rate at which the drilling motor is pulled out of hole should be reduced to allow time for the permeated nitrogen gas to escape from the rubber in the drilling motor without causing blistering. In wells that may be of a concern, it is recommended that the drilling motor be laid down after the first run. Once again, it is not the pressure on the drilling motor that causes the explosive decompression, but rather the rate of pressure drop the rubber is exposed to. Downhole, the gas is still compressed in the rubber, and does not deform the rubber. Damage does not occur until the pressure on the rubber is dropped dramatically by over 10,000 kPa (1450 psi). When drilling with air, the dump sub assembly discharge ports must be plugged off. The pressure drop across the dump sub will not be sufficient enough to close it under normal air flow rates. It is recommended that prior to air drilling that our Technical Services department review the well information with modeling to provide a suggested combination of air flow rate and lubricating fluid flow rate. With all compressible fluids, the performance of Computalog Commander drilling motors vary greatly with small differences in these two flow rates. To provide optimum life and performance characteristics, it is suggested our professional team assist you with flow rates selection.

Lower liquid rates may cause poor lubrication resulting in faster wear rates. The motor is likely being over run while circulating the drill string off bottom. When on bottom drilling, an increase in the combined equivalent flow rate of 10% over maximum recommended may help reduce stalling problems. Allow the weight on bit to drill off before pulling up off bottom. Work closely with the operator and underbalanced drilling engineer, to make small parameter changes

The torque performance curve of PDMs used in two phase flow does not change significantly except the maximum predicted differential pressure can not be achieved before the motor stalls thereby a lower maximum torque output. The following graph (Figure 2) illustrates the typical performance of a 121mm motor under several flow conditions but with similar equivalent combined flow rates. Note the significant drop in RPM at the same differential pressure. This drop in RPM combined with the reservoirs production and the degree of underbalanced achieved (how much below reservoir pressure), can have a significant affect on the rate of penetration.

Remove the lift sub and connect the kelly to the drilling motor, remove the dog collar / safety clamp, and lift the drilling motor out of the slips. Remove the thread protector from the bit box and inspect the threads for damage.

Lower the drilling motor until the dump sub ports are below the rotary table, yet still visible.
CAUTION: The dump sub valve will remain open until there is enough fluid pressure to close it. Therefore, the drilling motor should be lowered until the ports are below the rotary table. This will prevent the initial flow of drilling fluid from spraying on the rig floor. 4. Slowly start the pumps and ensure drilling fluid is flowing out of the dump sub ports. Increase the flow rate until the dump sub ports close, and drilling fluid stops flowing out. Make note of the circulation rate and standpipe pressure.
CAUTION: Do not exceed the maximum recommended flow rate for this test. 5. Lift the drilling motor until the bit box becomes visible. It should be rotating at a slow, constant speed. Listen to the bearing section of the drilling motor for excessive bearing noise, especially if the tool has been used previously without being serviced. Before stopping the pumps, the drilling motor should be lowered below the rotary table. Ensure that drilling fluid flows out of the dump sub ports after shutting down the pumps. It is possible that the dump sub valve remains closed after this test due to a pressure lock. If this occurs, no drilling fluid will flow out of the ports. To remove the pressure lock, bleed off some stand pipe pressure and the valve will open.

CAUTION: The surface check should be as short as possible; it is merely to ensure that the drilling motor is rotating. 7. After this surface check, the bit should be attached to the motor using a bit-breaker, while holding the bit box stationary with a rotary tong. Be sure to avoid contacting the end cap directly above the bit box with the tong dies.
CAUTION: It is recommended that you never hold the bit box stationary and rotate the drilling motor counter-clockwise, or hold the drilling motor stationary and rotate the bit box clockwise. This could possibly cause the internal drilling motor connections to back off and damage it. Although rotating in the opposite direction will result in drilling fluid to be pushed out the top end, the internal connections will not be at risk of disconnecting. 8. If the drilling motor has been used previously, an overall inspection should be completed. Inspect for seal integrity by cleaning the area above the bit box and visually checking for lubricating oil leakage or seal extrusion. General visual inspection of the entire drilling motor should be carried out to check for missing oil plugs, housing damage, or loose connections. Set the adjustable assembly to the desired bend. The instructions for this procedure can be found in the appendix of this handbook. A copy is also attached to each motor before it is sent out from the service shop. The torque required on the adjustable assembly is also indicated in the motor specifications.

10. If a float sub is used, it should be placed immediately above the drilling motor.
5.3 DRILLING
When the assembly has been tripped to the bottom of the hole, Computalog Commander drilling motors should be operated in the following manner: 1. With the bit 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) off bottom, start the pumps and slowly increase the flow rate to that desired for drilling. Do not exceed the maximum rated flow rate for the Computalog Commander drilling motor. Make a note of the flow rate and the total pump pressure. Note that the pressure may exceed the calculated off bottom pressure due to some side load effects between the bit and the hole diameter. After a short cleaning interval, lower the bit carefully to bottom and slowly increase the weight. Note that torque can be affected by a dirty, uncirculated hole and the hole should be adequately cleaned prior to orienting the tool. Fill may be cleaned out of the well bore by slowly rotating the drilling motor or by staging the drilling motor full circle 30 to 45 at a time. This prevents ledge buildup and side tracking.

Orient the drill string as desired and slowly apply further weight onto the bit. Pump pressure will rise as the weight on bit is increased. Note the change in system pressure between the off bottom and on bottom values. This will be the differential pressure. Try to drill with steady pump pressure by keeping a steady flow rate and constant weight on bit. Adding weight on bit will cause both the differential pressure and torque to increase. Similarly, reducing weight on bit will reduce both the differential pressure and the torque. Therefore, the rig pressure gauge enables the operator to monitor how the drilling motor is performing, as well as a weight on bit indicator.
NOTE:
CAUTION: Applying excessive weight on bit may cause damage to the on-bottom thrust bearings. Similarly, applying excessive tension while stuck may cause damage to the off-bottom thrust bearings. Please refer to the specifications for the recommended maximum loads for these conditions. CAUTION: Do not exceed the maximum recommended differential pressure as listed in the specifications. Failure to do so could result in premature wear or damage to the drilling motor stator. NOTE: Optimum differential pressure can be determined by monitoring motor performance, penetration rate, and drilling requirements. Also, maintaining a constant weight on bit and differential pressure assists in controlling orientation of the drill string.

the drilling fluid forces its way through the power section by deflecting the stator rubber. Drilling fluid will still circulate through the motor, but the bit will not turn. Operating in this state will erode and possibly chunk the stator in a very short period of time, resulting in extensive damage. It is very important to avoid this operating condition. When stalling occurs, corrective action must be taken immediately. Any rotary application should be stopped and built up drill string torque released. Then the weight on bit can be reduced allowing the drill bit to come loose and the drilling motor to turn freely. If the pump pressure is still high, the pumps should then be turned off. Once again, failure to do this will result in the stator eroding until the drilling motor is inoperable.

least one bottoms-up time to ensure that the well-bore has been cleaned thoroughly. The tripping out procedures for a Computalog Commander drilling motor are basically the same as those for tripping in. Taking care when pulling the drilling motor through tight spots, liner hangers, casing, casing shoes, and the B.O.P. is necessary to minimize possible damage to both the drilling motor and the well head components. Rotating may also be done to assist with the removal of the drill string. The dump sub valve will allow the drill string to be emptied automatically when tripping. Although the drill string will drain when tripping out, the drilling motor itself may not. Once the drilling motor is at surface, rotating the bit box in a counter-clockwise direction will naturally drain the drilling motor through the top. This is recommended before laying down a Computalog Commander drilling motor since aggressive drilling fluids can deteriorate the elastomer stator and seals. Fresh water should also be flushed through to ensure thorough cleaning of the drilling motor. Also, clean the bit box area with clean water and install a thread protector into the box connection. NOTE: Rotating the bit box in a clockwise direction will naturally drain the drilling motor through the bottom, but one of the internal connections may break and unscrew. For this reason, it is not recommended to rotate it in this manner.

D. Worn or Damaged Stator - with certain drilling fluids, stators may wear prematurely, resulting in noticeable weakening over its usage. As the stator wears, the speed of the drilling motor will be reduced. Therefore, indications of a worn stator will be a drop in the ROP, or an increase in the differential pressure required to produce the same ROP. E. Gas Kick - normal gas kick procedures apply 2. Circulation pressure is higher than calculated. A. Drilling Motor or Bit Plugged - This usually coincides with little or no circulation. Remove the weight on bit, allow the bit to drill off, and then stop the pumps. If the pressure remains high, it is possible that the drilling motor or all the bit jets are plugged. Once all hydraulic systems have been checked and verified, it may be necessary to pull out of hole. B. Excessive bit side loading due to under gauge hole or high adjustable assembly bend angle This usually coincides with full circulation. If the drilling motor is too tight against the wall of the wellbore, the drilling motor may be working too hard and the torque requirement will be greater than the recommended value for the drilling motor size. Corrective measures include reducing weight on bit or reducing the bend angle in the drilling motor. C. Drilling Motor Stalled or Stalling - Usually coincides with pressure increase. Rotary application should be stopped and any built up string torque slowly released. The weight on bit can then be reduced allowing the drill bit to come loose and the drilling motor to turn freely. If the pump pressure is still high, the pumps should be turned off. These steps must be followed in close succession to reduce potential stator damage. D. Mud Rings - occur when cuttings accumulate around tool joints. They cause the string to stick and prevent sliding. Use standard mud treatment procedures. 3. Change or Loss of rate of penetration. A. Drilling Motor Stalled - Usually coincides with pressure increase. Rotary application should be stopped and any built up string torque slowly released. The weight on bit can then be reduced allowing the drill bit to come loose and the drilling motor to turn freely. If the pump pressure is still high, the pumps should be turned off. These steps must be followed in close succession to reduce potential stator damage. B. Worn Stator - Refer to worn stator info under Circulation pressure is lower than calculated above. C. Change of Formation - Adjust the flow rate and weight on bit to optimize drilling performance for the new formation conditions. D. Drill String / Stabilizers Hung Up - Normal corrective procedures apply E. Bit Worn or Balling - Normal bit wear or balling procedures apply.

DIMENSIONAL DATA
Typical dimensions including length to bend, over-all length, length to upsets, as well as maximum outer diameters for various padding arrangements. Also included are the wellbore diameters that the drilling motors are recommended for, top and bottom connection specifications and total weight.
PERFORMANCE CHARTS
Charts for both metric and imperial units are shown to provide operational characteristics over the full range of flow rates and differential pressures for the drilling motor. Each chart Is actually two charts laid over each other. The two components of each chart are described below, as well as instructions in how to read them.

RPM
The first component of the chart is the RPM line. Across the bottom of the chart is differential pressure (kPa/psi). The differential pressure is the difference between the system pressure when the drilling motor is on-bottom (loaded) and off-bottom (not loaded). On the left side of the chart is the speed (RPM). These are the scales to be used when using the horizontal RPM lines on the chart. The horizontal lines start at the speed axis of the chart and begin to drop off slightly as differential pressure increases. They eventually end somewhere past the full load lines (vertical lines). These RPM lines are usually laid out as three lines, each for a different specified flow rate. The specified flow rates can be seen slightly above the line. The RPM lines are used to determine what the drilling motor RPM is, knowing what the flow rate and differential pressure are. Using the chart in Figure 3 for a 121 mm (4 3/4) Computalog Commander MN 4535 drilling motor, if the flow rate is 660 lpm (175 GPM) and the differential pressure is 2700 kPa (390 psi), the speed of the drilling motor would be approximately 155 RPM. For flow rates different than the ones given on the chart, lines can be interpolated between the lines, then RPM read. The chart shows what happens to the speed of the drilling motor as differential pressure is increased. For the most part, the drop in RPM as differential pressure increases is slight until the full load line is crossed. At that point the RPM drops quickly to zero, which is stall mode. Therefore, it is important to not go beyond the maximum recommended operating differential pressure, or the drilling motor will be operating inefficiently and wear will occur.
TORQUE
The second component of the chart is the torque line. On the right side of the chart is the torque scale (N-m, ft-lbs). The torque line is used with this scale and the differential pressure scale across the bottom. The torque line starts at 0 differential pressure and 0 torque and increases linearly as diferential pressure increases. The same torque line is used for the various flow rates because torque is independent of flow rate. The torque output of the drilling motor can be determined by knowing the differential pressure across the drilling motor. Using the chart in Figure 3, if the differential pressure is 2700 kPa (390 psi), the output torque from the drilling motor is approximately 1450 N-m (1050 ft - lbs).

FULL LOAD
Also on the charts are full load lines. These lines indicate the maximum recommended operating differential pressures of the drilling motor. If the differential pressure goes beyond these maximum values, the operating life of the stator will be reduced. Excessive pressure drop across the rotor and stator will cause pre-mature pressure wash or chunking, and impair performance. For some designs of drilling motors this maximum recommended operating differential pressure varies with the flow rate. The flow rate each full load line correlates with is written within the line. Flow rates between these values may have their full load lines interpolated. If only a single full load line is on the performance chart, it is used for the full range of flow rates.

The size of nozzle required can then be determined by looking at the enclosed table for nozzle sizes in Appendix 12. The design of the nozzle assemblies vary for the different sizes of drilling motors, so instructions for installing each one are described seperately below. 95 mm - 171 mm (3-3/4 - 6-3/4) Computalog Commander Drilling Motors (see Figure 5.1 and 5.2) 1 Using the rig tongs, break the top-most connection of the drilling motor, as indicated in Figure 5.1. Unscrew the dump sub assembly and set it aside. Using a screwdriver, remove the spiral wound retaining ring from inside the exposed top end of the rotor.

3 . Break the blank Smith bit nozzle from the rotor by using the appropriate Smith bit nozzle wrench and unscrew the blank nozzle from the rotor (see Table 5.1 for nozzle specifications). Ensure the o-ring is in good condition and still in the groove beyond the thread in the rotor. 4. Insert the new nozzle and torque as specified with the appropriate Smith bit nozzle wrench.
