based in Paris, bel group develops and manufactures high-quality, affordable, brand-name cheeses enjoyed worldwide. bel group had ambitious growth objectives, states yves gauguier, the companys Cio. but our existing systems and processes particularly in finance and supply chain management were holding us back. to help us achieve this growth, we chose to deploy the sAP ErP application company-wide as a way to standardize operations and increase efficiency. midway through its global deployment, bel needed help achieving its goal, so it leveraged the sAP Enterprise support services.
The Challenges of Optimizing Enterprise Software
bel was eager to realize the benefits of truly global, integrated processes and management reporting based on a single, trusted source of data. but as the company rolled out sAP ErP across the companys 21 locations, it ran into challenges. in the middle of the deployment, we could clearly see that the system wasnt optimized, states Cristina Pisica-Donose, sAP technical architect at bel group. for example, certain business processes were taking too long or failing. Database growth was increasing quickly and driving up costs. nightly batch jobs were occupying too much central processing unit (CPU) runtime. And the integrations between sAP ErP and third-party systems performed at unacceptable levels. the it department engaged its facilities management organization to help resolve the performance problems, but this team lacked the sAP-specific expertise needed to identify root causes and fix issues. At the time, we were also using sAP standard support option to help us resolve issues but only after problems occurred, states Pisica-Donose. We needed a way to address problems proactively, as part of the actual deployment, so that when we went live, we had a rock-solid system with minimal end-user issues. bel also needed expert insight into how to optimize what it had already implemented. and explained in detail how it could help us, explains gauguier. We went with sAP because we have a long-standing relationship with the company, and it knows how to optimize sAP ErP in all types of environments. to get started, bel upgraded to the latest version of the sAP solution manager application management solution, which the sAP support team used to analyze bels current system. states PisicaDonose, sAP solution manager identified bottlenecks; helped us benchmark key metrics such as CPU usage, data growth, and process times; and uncovered where we had the biggest issues. the information we gained helped us get off to a strong start with sAP Enterprise support services. apply state-of-the-art tools, techniques, content, and best practices to solve them. for example, bel took advantage of sAPs expert-guided implementation sessions and continuous quality check services; this allowed the company to implement new functionality in sAP solution manager for business process monitoring, data volume management, and custom code management. the firm also turned to sAP for business process optimization services to help it get the most from its end-to-end processes even those that integrate third-party products.

Realizing the Benefits


leveraging sAP Enterprise support, bel has made great strides in optimizing sAP ErP where it had already been deployed, as well as in deployments in new locations before they go live. states gauguier,

our invoicing process was painfully slow, the sAP team broke down the process step by step, identified process bottlenecks, and recommended process changes, resulting in an 80% performance improvement, states Pisica-Donose. similarly, when nightly batch jobs for reporting required excessive CPU runtime, the team analyzed the overall custom code share of its sAP ErP implementation, identified problematic code, and made changes that reduced custom code share from 25% to 10%. this lowered CPU utilization for the top 20 custom reports from 50% to 20%. the sAP Enterprise support team also helped with end-to-end processes requiring integration of sAP ErP with thirdparty software. for example, we use third-party software for supply chain management. so to feed our supply chain

sAP Enterprise support also enabled bel to control data growth and costs. We had high database volumes and rapid growth rates for our sAP ErP and business warehouse software, explains Pisica-Donose. the team from sAP analyzed the situation, and after implementing just part of the recommendations, we obtained a 14% reduction in database volume. because of this encouraging improvement, bel is currently implementing the remaining recommendations, which are expected to reduce database volumes by up to 40% and free up it budget for other initiatives. bel has realized additional significant benefits as well. for example, together with the sAP Enterprise support team, the company has improved the performance of critical application interfaces up to 80%, boosted the performance of the rebate billing document process by 30%, and fine-tuned standard rebate calculation functionality, increasing processing speed by 30%.
