PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
In its normal mode of operation, a Q-VAC Priming System operates automatically to establish and maintain a prime on all the pumps connected to it. This is accomplished by piping a vacuum line from the Q-VAC system to a priming valve installed in the suction piping and housing of each pump. The differential pressure created by the vacuum priming system draws water up the suction line, lifting it into the pump. As air is removed and the vacuum level increases, the water level will rise until the pump is fully flooded and the float actuated priming valve closes. Should the water level drop at any time the priming valve will immediately open and vacuum within the air receiver will restore the water level to its fully primed state. It is important to note that during automatic operation the priming system operates independently from the pumps being served and will cycle on only when needed to maintain a preset vacuum range. To provide verification that a pump is primed and ready to run, a water level control switch provides a signal from the priming valve to the pump controller. In the unlikely event that a priming valve fails and water begins to flood the system, a high water level switch installed in the air receiver will signal an audible and visual alarm while shutting down the priming system. Dry alarm contacts are provided in the Q-VAC control panel to allow remote monitoring.

Q-VAC Priming Systems increase water pump efficiency by removing entrained air while eliminating the possibility of a pump becoming air bound. Automatic operation of a Q-VAC Priming System ensures that every pump connected is always primed.

Q-VAC Priming Systems are engineered to provide the highest level of quality, performance, and convenience. With over 30 years of experience, our manufacturing capabilities, expertise, and attention to detail create standards that others simply cant match. Q-VAC Priming systems are available in simplex and duplex designs using rotary vane or liquid ring vacuum technologies. Priming systems incorporating oil-lubricated rotary vane vacuum pumps are the easiest to install, provide the highest efficiency, and create the deepest vacuum levels.

Priming systems using liquid ring vacuum pumps provide the highest reliability and lowest maintenance requirements. They are available in a wide range of sizes and several materials of construction. Liquid ring vacuum pumps have no metal-to-metal contact and are undamaged when ingesting saturated air, small amounts of liquids, and soft solids.

Each Q-VAC system is engineered with all the necessary accessories, controls, and safety devices needed for long, trouble-free operation. Convenience features like extended oil drain lines and vacuum release valves are standard to facilitate quick and trouble free maintenance.

Q-VAC duplex priming systems provide advanced controls and the safety of built-in redundancy. Since two vacuum pumps operate during initial priming, smaller vacuum pumps can be selected without sacrificing performance. However, to maximize efficiency only one vacuum pump runs during normal operation. Not only does this reduce power consumption, it also reduces the run time on each vacuum pump. Q-VAC duplex priming systems include a micro-processing controller and vacuum transducer to provide unsurpassed system control and reliability. Other standard features include automatic alternation, lead/lag control, frequent start protection, hour meters, run lights, audible & visual alarms, and dry alarm contacts for remote monitoring.

Although most applications require automatic controls, on-demand systems with manual controls are available for less critical, cost sensitive applications.

PRIMING VALVES Our standard float operated air release valves have been specifically designed for priming applications. They include a durable fusion bonded epoxy coating on the inside and outside of the valve body to provide exceptional abrasion and chemical resistance. The internal trim is 316 Stainless Steel to provide long life, even in aggressive water. The long body design and skirted float eliminate leakage caused by high vacuum levels. A weatherproof water level control switch is normally used to signal when a pump is primed, or to provide a warning if the prime has been lost.

PRIMING VALVE FEATURES Body and Cover Cast Iron ASTM A126, Class B Trim Stainless Steel, Type 316 Internal / External Coating Fusion Bonded Epoxy Orifice Seal Buna-N Cold Working Pressure 150 PSI (alternate pressures available)

WATER TRAPS As an optional accessory, an inline water trap can be installed in the main vacuum line to provide additonal protection against flooding the priming system. The water trap includes a washable stainless steel filtration screen to protect against large particulates, a float-type check valve for emergency shut off, a 1 manual drain valve, and a liquid filled vacuum gauge. The clear housing ensures that accumulated water is easily visible. Standard connection sizes are 1/2 NPT to 6 NPT.
