Fri, 2010-05-14 16:59 Government asked to take a side with the local players . JAKARTA: regulators plan to prepare for the 2.5 GHz band technology Long Term Evolution (LTE), which initially will be used for WiMax mobile broadband technology, is considered not in favor of a local businessman. Chairman of the Forum Communications Broadband Wireless Indonesia (FKBWI) Barata Wardhana Wisnu said if the option is decided, the government proved only mobile operator to raise alone. "They [mobile operators] are all large companies with majority foreign ownership, how the Internet network providers [ISPs] are mostly lower middle-class company," he told Bisnis, Wednesday. Government asked to embrace private entrepreneurs who were purely national, one of them by giving allocation for mobile WiMax. ISPs need support to develop themselves, before competing with mobile operators. Barata asked regulators not only to follow the global markets, but national interests also must get more servings. According to him, should slot in the 2.5 GHz band is allocated for both technologies. He understood the government has the right to decide to provide 2.5 GHz band for LTE technology, but the slot for WiMax technology and equipment should also be noted. "Why should we take the slot of the MCI [PT Media Citra Indostar] if now used for LTE technology used by major operators are almost all foreign investment status," he said. He revealed so far WiMax technology utilized by the local Internet network providers who form the majority of small and medium enterprises with national ownership, not a large company whose majority shares are foreign owned. Local Content Barata assess the regulator should have the preference to the domestic industry, not to shut down local businessmen to accommodate all foreign interests. FKBWI asked the government to implement local content rules on LTE technology devices, not just a calculated marketing effort included in the calculation of the percentage of local content. "They should open the device manufacturer or have minimal knowledge transfer as do

the multinational companies in the field of WiMax are now holding local companies for the production of WiMAX devices 16e [mobile]," he added. General Chairman of Indonesian Infocom Society (MASTEL) Setyanto P.
