Hi There has been many issues related to connectivity between DNS server and 6509 s wtiches Each Server

is directly connected to one 6509 Switch each and no cross connectio n exists. 1 port DNS 1 ---------> 6509-1 1 port DNS 2 ---------> 6509-2 whenever 6509-1 switch or it port gets down, connectivity is lost with DNS 1. consequently, SGSN traffic has to be shifted to DNS 2 manually which also requir es cache entries to cleared resulting in traffic dip & service degradations during that window. If we could make our configuration in such a way Team ports(2) DNS 1 ----------------> 6509-1, 6509-2 Team ports(2) DNS 2 ----------------> 6509-1, 6509-2 This can be achieved by physically connecting DNS server 1 with both the Switche s(6509-1,2), & teaming the ports of its NIC, at the server end into a single logical device to which network address can be a ssigned. If one of the physical NIC port fails, the IP address remains accessible because it is bound to the logical NIC rather than to a single physical NIC The same can be done for DNS 2. This will avoid any outage window incase any problem occur at Switch end individ ually.

Power Redundancy For DNS Server Currently , DNS HP Server runs only on single power supply. If we want to make i t dual, another smps has to be configured onto the system. This power redundancy will be an added advantage incase of any smps failure or ACDB failure. Require your affirmation, and suggestions to go ahead with this configurations.

NIC/LOM teaming can help ensure high availability and as well as helping to impr ove network performance. NIC teaming combines two or more physical adaptors into a single logical device to which network addresses can be assigned. This virtual adapter can provide fault tolerance and bandwidth aggregation. These features will vary based on the type of team selected, and th e environment the team is placed into. Teaming Features include Failover protection, increased bandwidth t hrough aggregation, and balancing of traffic among team members. If one of the physical NIC/LOMs fails, the IP address remains accessible because it is bound to the logical NIC rather than to a single physic al NIC. Additional item can cause the team to failover.

1. Connectivity btw 6509-1 & DNS-1 is lost (port is down) --Request made through 6509-1 will go to 6509-2 via port channel 11 to DNS 1 --Request made through 6509-2 will go directly to DNS 1. --Gratituous ARP will be recieved by DNS 1, if cache entries are not avaliable with 6509-1 2. Connectivity btw 6509-1 & DNS-1 is lost. (6509-1 Switch is down) --Request made through 6509-2 will go directly to DNS 1. --Gratituous ARP will be recieved by DNS 1, if cache entries are not avaliable with 6509-1 3. Connectivity btw 6509-2 & DNS-1 is lost (port is down) or Switch is down --Request made through 6509-2 will go to 6509-1 via port channel 11 to DNS 1 4. DNS Server 1 gets down -- In SGSN, DNS Primary IP is swapped with DNS2 server IP ,cache is cleared. 5. Connectivity btw 6509-1 , 6509-2 with DNS-2 will behave similarly like with D NS-1
