ESG281: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SOLID STATE

SUBJECT MATTER
This course is concerned with fundamental topics in modern physics, chemistry, and materials science with applications in engineering and technology. Introduces the student to the physics that explain optical, electronic, and mechanical properties of solids and how those properties are related to the nature of the bonds that hold atoms together. Topics discussed are: Brief discussion of relativity Atoms Quantization of light Quantization of atomic energy levels. Matter waves. Schrdinger equation in one dimension and three dimensions. Electron spin. Multielectron atoms: Pauli principle, periodic table. Emission and absorption of radiation. Molecules. Solids. Necessary background Calculus, Physics I and II, Chemistry Mechanics Newtons laws Force, momentum, work, potential energy, kinetic energy, power, angular momentum Circular motion, centripetal force Oscillations Waves (traveling and stationary waves) Interference and diffraction (diffraction gratins) Youngs double-slit experiment Electricity Coulombs law, Coulombs potential Electric field, force on charge q, electric dipole Current, Ohms law, resistance, resistivity, conductivity Magnetic field, force on moving charge q

GRADING SYSTEM
A) EXAMS (0-80 points) There will be three exams, all OPEN BOOK. EXAM I: Time and date to be determined Location: TBA 0-30 points Time and date to be determined Location TBA 0-30 points Time and date to be determined Location: TBA 0-20 points

B) HOMEWORK (0-20 points) Homework will be posted regularly on blackboard along with the due date. Problems will be collected and graded. C) Quizzes (0-10 extra points) There will be five quizzes of 10 min during the lectures throughout the semester. They will be announced both during lectures and on blackboard with sufficient notice. Quizzes will be similar to the one-bullet (see textbook for definition) problems of the homework. If you have done the homework you will do fine. Quizzes are OPEN BOOK you can bring notes, books, homework, or whatever you consider adequate (see policies for exceptions). You want to have a scientific calculator with you just in case it is necessary. Each quiz will give you up to 2 extra points.

POLICIES ON HOMEWORK, EXAMS, AND ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

HOMEWORK Collected and graded homework MUST be done individually. If it is clear that you copy your collected homework from somebody else, it will not be graded. QUIZZES

Quizzes will be carried out individually. Any collaboration or communication during the quiz will be considered academic dishonesty. You can use any kind of documentation (books or notes). Policy with regard to electronic devices. You MUST bring a scientific calculator to the quizzes. You CANNOT have any other electronic devices (palm-pilots, cell-phones, laptops, etc) on the table during the quiz. Valid identification (SBU ID or Drivers license) may be checked during the collection of the quizzes. Please be sure you bring a valid ID to the test. If I do not recognize you the chances I ask for your ID are very high. Each student will write his/her SBU ID number and name at the top of the page.

EXAMS Exams will be carried out individually. Any collaboration or communication during the exams will be considered academic dishonesty. All conversation is prohibited once the FIRST student has received the test. Do not sit near anyone you know or with whom you have studied. In case of problems it will be easier to eliminate any doubts about copying. You will not be allowed to wear headphones or to use cell phones in the exam room. Valid identification (SBU ID or Drivers license) may be checked at ANY time during the test. Please be sure you bring a valid ID to the test. Each student will sign his or her FIRST answer sheet and numerate them as follows: 1 of 5, 2 of 5, 3 of 5, etc. So that you are sure that no sheets are missing. Policy concerning requests to leave the room during the exam (e.g., to go to the bathroom). You can leave the room upon request to the instructor. You can take with you NOTHING (no papers, sheets, books, etc) and you can bring back NOTHING. Policy with regard to electronic devices. You MUST bring a scientific calculator to the exams. You CANNOT bring any other electronic devices (palm-pilots, cell-phones, laptops, etc). Bear in mind that if you let somebody copy from your exam you are also cheating.

WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU ARE CAUGHT CHEATING Please, be aware of the consequences that you will suffer if you engage in academic dishonesty. Cheating in any quiz: You lose all the extra points you may have accumulated during the whole semester You cannot take any more quizzes. Cheating in any one of the exams: You get a zero in that exam. You CANNOT receive extra points for contributions or activities during the rest of the semester. Severe cases of academic dishonesty or unethical behavior (such as using a false identity to take a test) will be reported to the Academic Judiciary Office. IMPORTANT NOTICE: if there is a situation that you think it can constitute a case of unethical behavior, but it is not listed here, you should ask the instructor whether that situation is or not unethical.
