Folk Strings

My Trio Book

Arranged and edited by Joanne Martin

Arranged by Kerstin Wartberg

Folk Strings is a collection of folk melodies from around the

world arranged for strings. Unlike classical music, which
normally has an "authentic" version, folk music often exists in
many versions, with differences in the melody or lyrics. Most
folk songs were sung and played for many years before they
were written down and their original composer is usually
u n k n own. This collection includes melodies in a variety of
moods and with rhythmic patterns which are representative of
their country of origin. The arrangements in Folk Strings can
be effective with players at a variety of levels. In order to
provide maximum f l e x i b i l i t y, the collection is available in a
number of instrumentations.

THE EDUCATIONAL TOOL THAT ENHANCES BOW DISTRIBUTION

The Bow Stopper is a great tool for helping young string players in managing

places emphasis on learning by feeling rather than sight thus allowing the player

The Frustrated Accompanist

Carol Leybourn Janssen

This series is excellent and unique! Currently

available piano accompaniments are clumsy, if
not outright unplayable, causing frustration...
the average accompanist must leave out some
notes in difficult sections. These reductions are
technique friendly to many accompanists, and
music teachers and parents who have some
knowledge of the piano will love this series!

Ask the Maestro!

Whats the difference

between various
string Core Material?

Gut core strings produce the

darkest, richest sound. Since gut
is a natural fiber, it will react to
changes in temperature and humidity.
Response is slower than other string
types. Use with fine tuners is not
recommended.
Synthetic core strings are meant
to sound as similar to gut as possible,
but with superior stability and durability.
Stronger than gut, synthetic strings
are not as susceptible to changes in
humidity. Sound is generally brighter than
gut, with a faster response. Use with fine
tuners is not recommended.
Steel core strings are brighter in tone
and more responsive than gut or synthetic
strings. They consist of a single strand of
steel that is not as susceptible to climate
changes and will generally last a long
time. May be used with fine tuners.
Rope core strings are brighter than steel.
The core consists of many thin strands of
steel. Fastest response of all the strings, not
as susceptible to climate changes. May be
used with fine tuners.
Loop-end or ball-end strings?
Its a matter of preference; heres what
they look like!

I installed a set of Passione on my violin, and I like them. They are different than the
Olivenot as brassy, yet stronger than the Eudoxa. The Passione have a richer tone
and easier response. They seem to have less tension than the Evah and less surface noise.
Passione strings will take more time to stretch out, similar to gut core strings. After
stretching out they are reasonably stable, although they need more frequent re-tunings
than synthetic core strings.

Q&A: E-Strings for Violinists

Charles Avsharian on E-Strings:
Q: What do you look for in an
E-string?
A: Tone quality and durability. I happen to
prefer a really brilliant sound. I am cur
rently using a Corelli Crystal E which
may be too bright for some musicians...
they are powerful and sound great on my
Lupot.

Q: How often do you change

E-strings?
A: I have had some last for many months.
Q: What about thickness and
wear on your fingers?
A: One has to decide about the gauge/
thickness by trial and error. A thick string
will add pressure to the top of the violin
could be good or bad. I use a medium
gauge. "

Q: What is it that is most import a n t

to you about an E-string?
A: C LA R I TY. Pure ringing and responsiveness
all the way to the end of the fingerboard.
A PLEASANT SOUND when played
alone, (open string not a cheap and
annoying tone).
AS SMOOTH AS POSSIBLE. Not
producing a strident, ugly sound.
POWER. Especially up high where the
brilliance is absolutely needed and expected
LONG-LASTING. Not prone to breaking
or becoming false quickly
WHISTLING RESISTANCE

Q: Any other comments to any

one considering trying a new
E-string?

The specially twisted steel rope core settles in quickly and

intonates extremely well. It has exceptional tuning stability.
The tone is dark and warm with excellent resonance, with a
wide range of tone colors. Pizzicato is open and free. Offers
outstanding projection with moderate effort, and sustains
better than most other arco strings. Gives a quick response
to the bow, and is soft under your fingers.
