Ronald Cano 3/15/11 Per 3 Prompt: Compare and Contrast how 2 poets convey the idea of War Death

of the Ball Turret Gunner- Jarrell War Is Kind- Crane Jarrell and Cranes use of imagery differentiate of how well war is portrayed. Where Jarrell brief but simple and flows well poem strikes readers use of imagery of war can happen so fast and Cranes use of irony to portray how war is ironically kind. Jarrell uses metaphors to create the imagery of war. Cranes use of irony symbolically makes its twist and turns of what the goodness of war creates by juxtaposing ideas. Jarrells poem is rather brief; however it does have a powerful meaning behind it. The element of war is clearly present in the poem, the first sentence From my mothers sleep can be interpreted as an adolescent, once being with his family and now is drafted into a war. Hunched in its belly draws our attention that the soldier is now within the battle of war and the idea of fur froze demonstrates that the soldier is filled with being paranoid and shocked that he is in this position. Continuing on with this poem the flow from being at home and then drafted to being in battle brings the soldier to loose his state of mind Loosed from its dream Momentarily being subconscious he then awakes to being attacked by his nightmare, the opposing enemy. Jarrell captures the whole journey of the soldiers war experience with him dying within the enemies hands. His body burnt away just as well washed away washed me out Jarrell captures the essence of being within the battle of a soldiers point of view to express the experience of war.

In the poem War Is Kind, by Stephen Crane bounces between juxtaposing ideas of war. Within the title, sarcasm is pointed out with the idea of war being kind but in reality war is an immense incident of battle, loss, betrayal and dealing with defeat. Your lover threw wild with the first stanza a lover is addressed that they are lost in a battle. Loosing a lover in war adds on to the irony of the title and lionizes the idea of war is not so kind. Especially when Crane says the unexplained glory flies above them, he is making a powerful statement by questioning whether all the death and destruction is really worth it thus demonstrating the irony he is adding on to the piece. Crane especially demonstrates the irony at the end when he powerfully states Mother whose heart hungThis is very powerful, and Crane points out that the glory of war and honor of battle are not worth much to a parent whose son has died, or wife whose husband has died, or child whose father has died. Cranes questioning of warfare in general is very powerful and give everyone something to think about. Both poets capture the element of war by drawing our attention to be in the shoes of someone during the war time. Where Jarrell takes us on a brief poem the use of imagery compliments whats going on at war. Being in the position of Jarrell being drafted and loosing sight of everything then coming to realization that its not a dream its actually a reality of a nightmare coming true. In the other hand Crane symbolically lionizes the use of irony to question the goods of war. Crane questioning if the loss of a father or son or even brother is really worth it. Crane just plays the part of war being kind and the subtle details of war being kind.
