Background Mandate of HVDC Design WG Scope of WG Questions & Discussions

Traditional Applications of HVDC

Bulk power transfer For distance of 600 km, was 800 km or longer (cheaper DC lines + lower losses versus converter stations cost + converter losses) System Connections asynchronous power systems with different frequencies

What have changed?

Power grid More complex Increased power flow required Power sources Different characteristics smaller and larger number of generators renewables - wind, solar DC Converter Technology Lower cost, smaller size, more reliable Mercury Arc Valve > Thyristor > VSC

Advantages of DC

Easily controlled, avoid loop flows Complement AC grid to prevent power failure cascading Smaller footprint for lines Magnetic field not a concern Lower line losses Operate single pole independently enhance reliability DC cables carry power for long distances no charging current Tie power sources of different characteristics

Disadvantages of DC

Line not easily tapped off for power Additional converter costs Technology not as common as AC Additional studies required on - components - electric charges - multi-terminal - integration into ac systems

Mandate of HVDC Design WG

Provide guidance to members in the design of HVDC overhead lines

Proposed Tasks for WG

Develop an outline for the guide Identify differences and similarities between HVAC and HVDC line designs Gather information from other WGs that is applicable to HVDC designs Gather information on design information unique to HVDC from publications Work together with other WGs to develop missing information Prepare state-of-art guide
