Year: 6

Subject: Science

Sub-topic: Simple Machines (Theme 5; Unit 6)

Date: 4th October 2008

Time: 8am – 9am (1 hour)

No. of pupils: 25 pupils (13 male; 12 female)

Unit Goals: Pupils should be able to:

• Recognize that system is made up of different parts that
work together to perform a function.
• Show an understanding that both living things and non-
living things have systems.

Learning At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able:

Objectives: 1. To recognize that a machine makes work easier.
2. To investigate the types of simple machines; levers,
inclined planes, wheel and axles, gears and pulleys.
3. To identify the types of simple machine in everyday use
tools.
4. To explore the activities on simple machines from the
websites as their assessment in class.
5. To manipulate the simple machines to determine their
uses and state at least 2 examples of the different types
of simple machines.
6. To recognize the usefulness and limitations of simple
machines, and appreciate its applicability in everyday life.
7. To answer at least 70% of the worksheet given, which
have been diversify for slow, average and fast learners.

Materials: 1. Real objects:

a. Scissors (Lever)
b. Screw (Inclined plane)
c. Mini plastic bicycle (Wheel and Axle, Gear)
2. Pictures:
a. Stairs (Inclined plane)
b. Flag pole (Pulley)
3. Computers (two pupils per computer)
4. Power point slides to be use during explanation.
5. Internet connection.
6. Worksheets for class work.
7. Video on Simple Machine.

The Hook: Teacher will show to the class, one by one, the real tools that the
teacher brought from home and also some pictures of everyday use
tools. Teacher will ask the pupils to identify the name of the tools
shown and also state the function of the tools.

Exploration: Pupils will need to investigate based on where, when and how
those tools are used in real life. They may also think of any tools of
simple machines that they know and familiar with. From here, the
teacher will introduce to them the new concept that they will learn
and give them the definition of simple machines and give them
some examples by using verbal explanation and at the same time
integrating IT in the lesson.

Practice: Teacher will use the Power Point slides (See Appendix 1) to give
further explanation about the types of simple machines which
consist of: gears, pulley, wheel and axle, inclined planes, and
levers. For each types of simple machine, teacher will provide them
with pictures as examples and teacher will describe to them the
functions of the machines in everyday life that makes our life
easier. Teacher will also ask the pupils to predict the type of simple
machine.
Summary: When the pupils have seen some examples of simple machines and
know their functions in real life, teacher will grouped them in pairs.
Each group will be provided with 1 computer.
Teacher will help each group on how to browse the website in order
to answer the online quiz for simple machine:
http://www.coe.uh.edu/archive/science/science_lessons/scienceles
1/test.htm

Then, after that, teacher will help them to browse the selected
websites in order for them to play games on simple machine:

http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/machines/simple_machine
s.htm

http://www.edheads.org/activities/simple-
machines/frame_loader.htm

This game or activity about simple machines may give practice to

them to investigate more about types of simple machines. In
addition to that, the pupils will be more familiar to them and also
the uses in our everyday life.

Application: Pupils are aware of the tools and its application usage in their
everyday life. This lesson can enhance their awareness and they
will be able to relate what they already know with what they have
learnt.

Assessment: There will be three different worksheets; for slow learners, average
learners and fast learners (See Appendix 2, 3 and 4).
The Oral questioning by selecting the pupils randomly (See Appendix
Preview: 5). If there is enough time, then teacher will let pupils to watch a
video that summarize today’s lesson.

Aside from that, teacher will give the pupils another link, for them
to learn in order to enhance their understanding on simple
