Have your say on local laws

Moreton Bay Regional Council will move a step closer to another important amalgamation milestone this month with the release of new draft local laws for the entire region.
You can have your say on the new local laws from 25 October to 5 December. Just like the regions current local laws, the new ones cover important issues such as the keeping of animals, parking, the use of roads, parks and local government areas, and the commercial use of public spaces. The release of the new draft local laws for public feedback is the culmination of a comprehensive review by council. Under councils proposal, the 60 existing local laws that apply in the three former council areas have been streamlined into just six that will cover the whole Moreton Bay region. This simplified approach to local laws will improve processes, eliminate duplication and more importantly make local government requirements and conditions easier to understand and apply. The new local laws are aimed at maintaining our Moreton Bay lifestyle and protecting our environment and local communities. From Monday, 25 October councils website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au will have a section dedicated to what is planned, where you can see the proposed laws and how to provide feedback. There will also be factsheets available on the website, as well as at council customer service centres and libraries, to explain the existing laws, the proposed laws and what the changes will mean. So make sure you take this opportunity to have a say on issues such as rules for keeping roosters, fines for illegal parking, outdoor dining restrictions for commercial operators, penalties for overgrown allotments, abandoned shopping trolleys and other important local law matters.

Cross Cabooltures Lagoon Creek

Pull on your sneakers, dust off your bicycle and check out the latest million-dollar addition to Moreton Bay regions comprehensive pedestrian and cycle network.
The Caboolture Lagoon Creek Bridge will officially open before Christmas and will provide residents with a convenient link between Grigor Street and Wallace Street North. The new section, complete with its 36 metre boardwalk, will be less prone to flooding and is yet another council project that is making it even easier for cyclists and walkers to enjoy the regions outdoor attractions.

Redcliffe tennis revived

The rejuvenated Redcliffe Tennis Centre re-opened for business earlier this month following a major $3 million upgrade by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Queensland Government.
The complex now features 12 plexi-cushion and synthetic grass courts as well as a new clubhouse, fencing, lighting and general club amenities. Besides boosting social, coaching and competition opportunities, the new facilities will allow the centre to host a range of premier junior and open-age tournaments.

Infrastructure boost battles deluge

Council is on a mission to reduce the effect the storm season can have on the community.
More than $3 million will be spent during the next few months upgrading local stormwater infrastructure at Strathpine, Mango Hill, Arana Hills, Bellara and Burpengary. These important projects will help minimise the effect of stormwater on local residents, motorists and properties in times of high rainfall. Projects comprise: a $1.4 million boost to drainage at the intersection of Gympie and Bells Pocket roads, Strathpine the replacement of drainage at Bargo and Cawdor streets, Arana Hills planning and design of a $1.1 million upgrade to John Street at Mango Hill a $750,000 improvement at Bellara to reduce flooding and prevent land erosion along Bellara Drive $550,000 for new infrastructure at Joyce Street, Burpengary (work to commence January 2011). For more information about projects happening in your community visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au

Bag a catch at Burpengary

Launching the boat and bringing home the catch of the day is about to get a whole lot easier for Burpengary residents.
The popular Uhlmann Road boat ramp will reopen to the public next month following a major $750,000 upgrade by Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Queensland Government. The site has been transformed into a modern and user-friendly facility featuring a new 25-bay car park, boat ramp and safer rigging and turning areas. The work is a great addition to the regions many boating facilities and provides residents with better access to the Caboolture River and Moreton Bay.

National Recycling Week

Waste less, recycle more.
Thats the message from Moreton Bay Regional Council during this years National Recycling Week which runs from 8 to 14 November.
The week provides the perfect opportunity for all of us to think about how we deal with waste and recyclables around the home and at work. Council is giving local schools a thousand reasons to get involved in the Green Dream school competition. By creating a piece of sustainable artwork, students will go in the running to win $1000 for environmental initiatives at their school. HOW YOU CAN HELP OUR ENVIRONMENT Recycle paper, cardboard, milk & juice cartons, steel, aluminium, glass bottles, plastic bottles and containers FAST FACTS
The average Moreton Bay region household generates around 19kg of waste each week. Only 36% of this waste is recycled. A further 25% of general waste could have been recycled.

Compost garden and food waste Reduce packaging waste Use reusable bags

Registrations close 29 October with artwork due by 19 November. Winners will be announced at the end of November, 2010. For more information about National Recycling Week visit www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au or call 3205 0555.

Zap Mozzies
Mosquitoes like to breed when its warm and wet, but you can help keep their numbers down this summer.
Council carries out an extensive aerial and ground treatment program which minimises saltwater mosquito numbers, but this program does not stop mosquitoes breeding in fresh water around homes. Mosquitoes can breed in as little as seven tablespoons of water, which means tarpaulins over boats, palm fronds, flower pots and old tyres all offer potential. Keep an eye on your yard for spots where water can collect and make sure this water is emptied. By being vigilant you can help manage mozzies around your home.

Prepare. Act. Survive

No matter where you live, you should have a survival plan that details what you will do if a bushfire threatens your home.
You dont have to live in the bush to be at risk from bushfire through embers, smoke and burning material. But there are things you can do right now to prepare your property for bushfire season. These are: Clear potential bushfire fuel, such as tree branches and woodpiles, away from the house. Remove leaves and rubbish from gutters. Make sure the roof is in good condition and fill ends of corrugated roofing Enclose all eaves Fit wire screens to doors, windows and roof vents Enclose underfloor spaces Install taps with long hoses at strategic places Ensure LPG safety valves face away from the house Check firefighting equipment and have a standby water pump Make sure any water tanks have a 50mm camlock so firefighters can use the supply if needed. Council is working with the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service to help promote the important steps every householder should take to prepare for bushfires. For more information see www.fire.qld.gov.au or www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au Download the Are You Bushfire Prepared? booklet to assist in your bushfire preparation.

Be ready for storm season

Protect yourself and your property against the damaging effects of severe storms by carrying out some simple precautions.
Secure loose items around your yard Clean roof gutters and downpipes Take green waste and yard rubbish to the tip Trim tree branches away from the house

Keep that radio handy

Now is the time to check that you have a fully charged, battery operated radio in your homes emergency kit.
In events like severe storms, cyclones, bushfires and floods, radio stations 612 ABC, 101.5FM in Caboolture and 99.7FM in Redcliffe, will keep you up to date on road closures, evacuation centres and other important information.
