Professional Philosophy

Students learn from teachers past experiences and knowledge. Understanding the branches of educational philosophy helps the teacher define his/her methods of teaching. With metaphysics, the teacher attempts to explain the nature of the real world. The epistemologist tries to find truth of knowing. Axiology teaches values. Finally the philosophy of logic deals with reasoning, or how to think.

I feel that the students learn from fundamentals of these philosophies. I believe students learn from experience and hands on creativity, as well as lecturing from the teacher. Through my own experiences, I believe that each student may respond to different teaching methods. I believe that students should be problem solvers, and that it is the teachers responsibility to teach the student how to think for him or herself. This can, and will, build up their self-esteem and enable them to face the challenges in the real world.

I believe that every student is unique and it is my goal to help them embrace their uniqueness in a way that will help them develop greater sense of self worth and confidence. This quote by Pablo Picasso really speaks to me All children paint like geniuses. What do we do to them that so quickly dulls this ability? I never like to see a child erase a picture, or start over thinking that somehow it is not perfect. In my opinion, to set a goal for perfection stifles creativity in art as well as life.

As an art teacher, I believe in showing student examples of artwork, from the masters of art through different cultures, in order to develop an awareness of art. This means I am interested in in using different cultures as a catalyst to covering the basic of art, elements and principles. Multiculturalism is an integral part of understanding art from other cultures, and is fun and easy way to introduce the students to the world.

Teaching through the DBAE format, the students will achieve a well-rounded art education. Through the recognition of art aesthetics and criticism, the student will be able to analyze their artwork and self reflect. The students will become familiar with art aspects, and will be able to

dissect any image they review. I seek to have the students understand how and why artwork is produced, and that there is a meaning beyond the picture itself.

My main goal is to give my students a sound base to build upon. I will be proud if I can build up their self-confidence through fun and educational art projects. Art classes allow the student to express their inner thoughts, and provide exposure to variations of art around the world. Through interdisciplinary studies, the students might find their niche or calling in the world. Art can be expressed in many different ways. I will allow flexibility when trying to build upon each particular students interest.

I am committed to finding innovative ways to incorporate technology into my classroom. The quote from Alvin Toffler that says The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn is statement of what teaching is all about. We must as educators embrace technology and use it to engage our student in the classroom.

I am dedicated to the right for every person to be able to express their opinions and to seek and receive information through any media without censorship.

In conclusion, children need guidance and an understanding of the world we live in. Teachers are a great resource and can provide children with the information that will encourage their future success.
