MBC3 ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR Instructions to the students

Course Teacher - Dr.M.Mariappan

Dr.M.Mariappan is working as Associate Professor, Centre for Hospital Management, School of Health Systems Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences. He did his master degree Master in Hospital Management (MHM) from Madurai Kamaraj University in 1992. This course was offered in joint collaboration with Michigan University (USA). He got his PhD in Health Systems Studies titled Quality Work Environment and Quality of Work Life, Mumbai: A study of Nursing Staff in Public Sector Hospitals from Tata Institute of Social Sciences in 2010. He visited to London School of Economics as Vis iting Fellow under Faculty Exchange programme of TISSLSE project. He worked as hospital administrator in hospitals from 1992 to 2000 in Bangalore. He has been working as a teacher since 2000 in Tata Institute of Social Sciences. He did research studies and, consultancy services for Governments, Corporate sectors and Charitable Institutions. He organised and conducted many training programmes at National and International for Medical officers, Nursing staff and other paramedical staff. He has got few publications in his credit which includes case studies, training manuals and modules and journal articles. He has been member of various academic and other bodies as a professional member. His areas of teaching are human resources, organisational behaviour, financial accounting, management accounting and costing of healthcare services and Financial Management.

Teaching Method and Evaluation

Class room lecture and discussion (24 hrs) Group discussion/case study 4 hrs (8 case, each 30 minutes) Role-play by students - 2 hrs. Evaluation o Assignment 40 percent: One assignment topics will be assignment to the team of students consists of five. These students shall work on the assignment and present it for the feedback from the course teacher and colleagues during the schedule class. After incorporating the suggestions and other improvements if any the students will submit one copy (printed in Font size Times Roman 12 with proper margin. Assignment must carry the information of title, students roll numbers (not name), Index with page numbers and other aspects) to the secretariat on or before the last day of lecture. The assignment submitted late will not be accepted.

Written Examination 60 percent: Five questions will be asked in the question paper and students need to answer only three. It is all essay type questions. The length of the answer would be 800 to 1000 words per answer.

Note: time allotted to the topic may change; it depends on the class participation and discussion. Time allocated to the topic include lecture, case study discussion and presentation wherever it is possible.

Course objectives

To demonstrate an understanding of the behaviour of people both as individuals and as members of groups in organisations;

To integrate the theory of organisational behaviour with management practice; To identify how managers structure and design their organisations.

Guidelines for preparing assignment

Organisational Behaviour The basic purpose of the assignment is to explore some of the people issues within an organization. You shall able to find out what organisation (managers/officers) is trying to do under specific settings like Government Hospitals, Corporate Hospitals, and Non-Government Organizations. It is expected tha t you shall use the knowledge and skills obtained from the class discussion and your readings for preparing the assignment topics. The Length of the assignment should be approximately 3000 words. Please note that the word count does not include the reference page or the appendices. You shall carry out the work as a team and demonstrate that each member has contributed to completion of assignment. Follow proper format for writing your assignment. The report should be given adequate margin, font size Times Roman 12, in A4 size paper. Please ensure that the Course title, assignment topic(s), team members roll numbers are written in the first page. Please provide index and page number in the second page of the assignment. Please make sure that your assignment follows with introduction, headings and sub-headings if any promptly. Please provide clear references to content, wherever the materials drawn etc. Please avoid copying any source of materials which will form misconduct and you may be liable for action. You have to use self insights questionnaire for supporting your assignment. You may use the questionnaires which have been provided to you and the same will be filled by your colleagues. If you feel you can conduct interview with Hospitals/NGO, if possibly you can use such sources. Your report should also comment on the issues and the management response from the perspective of the theories presented on the Organizational Behaviour module.

You are expected to make a presentation regarding your assignment. Time allocated for each assignment for presentation is 10 minutes only. Please note that the assignment presentation is meant for only taking feedback from the class and your teacher and not for evaluation. Evaluation is done only based your report and its performance. The mark allotted for your assignment is 40 percent.
