PROBLEM 1
Sharma Industries manufactures various types of gear sets used in various machines which include automobiles, manufacturing machines (milling, lathe) etc. The operations required to manufacture these parts are carried out on turning, milling, drilling, boring and grinding machines. As per the requirement by Shree Automobiles the company needs to manufacture three different types of gear sets say A, B and C. The sequence of operations with their respective operation time (in days) of manufacturing these sets are given below: Gear set A:

Turning 2
Gear set B:

Drilling 4

Milling 3

Boring 6

Turning 4
Gear set C:

Milling 3

Drilling 4

Milling 4
Problem:

Drilling 5

Boring 3

1) Suggest a schedule by which the production of all three products can be completed in the shortest possible time.

2) The cost of operating the machines is given as: Machine used Turning Milling Drilling Boring Operating Cost/day 60 100 100 40

Also the cost of idle time is 60 percent of the above, suggest a schedule by which production costs would be minimum if: i. ii. iii. iv. Time after the last use of machine is not considered to be idle time. Time Before first use of machine is not considered as idle time. Both the above time are not considered as idle time. Both the above time are considered as idle time.

PROBLEM 2
Rohit Kumar is the manager of South-Asian office of the Nathaniel Shipping and Transportation Company. He is in the process of negotiating a new shipping contract with Parma Chemicals. PCs want Nathaniel to pick up and transport waste products from its six plants to four waste disposal sites. The waste that will be hauled can be hazardous to humans and the environment if they leak. Thus, not only will the shipments have to be handled carefully and transported at reduced speeds, they will also have to traverse circuitous routes in many cases. The estimates of the cost of shipping(in Rupees) a barrel of waste from each of the six plants to each of the three waste disposal sites as shown in the following table:

Waste Disposal Sites Plants

Dehradun Ratlam Hyderabad Gurgaon Kolkata Baroda Shahdol 120 140 130 170 70 220 Saharanpur 150 90 200 160 140 160 Kolhapur 170 100 110 190 120 180

Each week the plants generate amounts of waste as shown in the following table:

Plant
Dehradun Ratlam Hyderabad Gurgaon Kolkata Baroda

Waste per Week (BBL)

35 26 42 53 29 38

The three waste disposal sites at Shahdol, Saharanpur, and Kolhapur can accommodate a maximum of 65, 80, and 105 barrels per week, respectively.

The estimated shipping cost (in Rupees) per barrel between each of the three waste disposal sites is shown in the following table: Waste Disposal Site Shahdol Saharanpur Kolhapur
Shahdol -120 100 Saharanpur 120 -150 Kolhapur 100 150 --

In addition to shipping directly from each of the six plants to one of the three waste disposal sites, Rohit is also considering using each of the plants and waste disposal sites as intermediate shipping points. Trucks would be able to drop a load at a plant or disposal site to be picked up and carried on to the final destination by another truck, and vice versa. Nathaniel would not incur any handling costs since PCs has agreed to take care of all local handling of the waste materials at plants and the waste disposal sites. The following table shows how much Rohit estimates the shipping costs(in Rupees) per barrel between each of the six plants to be.
Dehradun Plants Dehradun -Ratlam 60 Hyderabad 50 Gurgaon 90 Kolkata 70 Baroda 80 Ratlam 60 -110 100 120 70 Hyderabad 40 110 -30 70 150 Gurgaon 90 100 30 -30 160 Kolkata 70 120 70 30 -140 Baroda 80 70 150 160 140 --

1) Determine the shipping routes that will minimize Nathaniels total cost in order to develop a contract proposal to submit to PCs for waste disposal.
2)

Is it cheaper to ship directly from the plants to the waste sites or to drop and pick up some loads at the various plants and waste sites.
