Open Letter from World Scientists to All Governments See #2. Summary We, the undersigned scientists call for the immediate suspension of all environmental releases of GM crops, both commercially and in open field trials, for at least five years; and for patents on organisms, seeds, cell lines and genes to be revoked and banned. Patents on life-forms are allowing corporations to pirate intellectual and genetic resources from Third World nations and increasing corporate monopoly on food production and distribution. GM crops are not necessary to feed the world. There is already more than enough food for everyone. What we need is an end to food monopoly and a more equitable distribution. The public have been promised miracle GM crops that will fix nitrogen, resist drought and improve yield. Instead, the only crops on offer are engineered to be tolerant to wide-spectrum herbicides manufactured by the same corporations, or are engineered with bt-toxins to kill insect pests. The latest largescale survey of GM crops showed they offered no benefits. On the contrary, they yield significantly less and require the use of more herbicides. The hazards of GM crops are now becoming apparent, and some of them are acknowledged by sources with the UK and US Governments. The herbicides used with herbicide-tolerant crops destroy biodiversity and are toxic to many animals including human beings. Herbicide-tolerant GM crops have become weeds and created further weeds by cross-pollination. The bt-toxins harm beneficial insectpollinators, and have also led to widespread evolution of resistance among insect pests. The horizontal spread of antibiotic resistance marker genes from GM crops has already been recognised as a serious hazard that will compromise the treatment of life-threatening infectious diseases which have come back worldwide. New findings show that the horizontal spread of marker genes and other transgenic DNA can occur, not only by ingestion but via breathing in pollen and dust. The cauliflower mosaic viral promoter, widely used in GM crops, may enhance horizontal gene transfer and has the potential to generate new viruses that cause diseases. All commercial plantings and open field trials should be halted. They are hazardous as the spread of transgenic pollen cannot be controlled. At the same time, the fieldtrials will produce no useful results because the protocols are inadequate. No attempts are being made to monitor for horizontal gene transfer or for impacts on public health. There is an urgent need for research into sustainable agricultural methods that do not require GM crops. Many of these systems have already resulted in increased yields and diminished environmental impacts around the world.

Patents on life-forms are allowing corporations to plagiarise indigenous knowledge and plunder genetic resources from Third World communities, and at the same time, increasing corporate monopoly on food which is destroying livelihoods of family farmers all over the world. 2. It is becoming increasingly clear that the current GM crops are neither needed nor beneficial. They are a dangerous diversion from the real task of providing food and health around the world. Too many instances of rogue scientists having been discovered altering the structure of seeds in order to carry disease, which can and probably are targeting the human race. We see this as inevitable and nothing short of BIO-WAR in our food. 3. The promises to genetic engineer crops to fix nitrogen, resist drought, improve yield and to 'feed the world' have been around for at least 30 years. Such promises have built up a multibillion-dollar industry now controlled by a mere handful of corporate giants. 4. The miracle crops have not materialised. Instead, two simple characteristics account for all the GM crops in the world [2]. More than 70% are tolerant to broadspectrum herbicides, with companies engineering plants to be tolerant to their own brand of herbicide, while the rest are engineered with bt-toxins to kill insect pests. A total of 65 million acres were planted in 1998 within the US, Argentina and Canada. The latest surveys on GM crops in the US, the largest grower by far, showed no significant benefit. On the contrary, the most widely grown GM crops - herbicidetolerant soya beans - yielded on average 6.7% less and required two to five times more herbicides than non-GM varieties [3]. 5. According to the UN food programme, there is enough food to feed the world one and a half times over. World cereal yields have consistently outstripped population growth since 1980, but one billion are hungry [4]. It is on account of corporate monopoly operating under the globalised economy that the poor are getting poorer and hungrier. Family farmers all over the world have been driven to destitution and suicide, and for the same reasons. Between 1993 and 1997 the number of mid-sized farms in the US dropped by 74,440 [5], and farmers are now receiving below the average cost of production for their produce [6]. Four corporations currently control 85% of the world trade in cereals [7]. 6. The new patents on seeds will intensify corporate monopoly by preventing farmers from saving and replanting seeds, which is what most farmers still do in the Third World. Christian Aid, a major charity working with the Third World, concludes that GM crops will cause unemployment, exacerbate Third World debt, threaten sustainable farming systems and damage the environment. It predicts famine for the poorest countries [8]. The picture is just as grim for the developed world. A coalition of family farming groups in the US have declared their opposition to GM crops and corporate ownership of life-forms through patenting. They are demanding a moratorium on all corporate mergers and acquisitions, a moratorium on farm

closures, and an end to policies that serve big agribusiness interests at the expense of family farmers, taxpayers and the environment [9]. 7. The hazards of GM crops are now becoming apparent, and some of them are acknowledged by sources within the UK and US Governments. For example, the UK Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) has admitted that the transfer of GM crops and pollen beyond the planted fields is unavoidable [10], and this has already resulted in herbicide-tolerant weeds [11]. Bt-resistant insect pests have evolved in response to the continuous presence of the toxins in transgenic plants throughout the growing season, and the US Environment Protection Agency is recommending farmers to plant up to 40% non-GM crops in order to create refugia for non-resistant insect pests [12]. The broad-spectrum herbicides used with herbicide-tolerant GM crops not only decimate wild species indiscriminately, but are toxic to animals. One of them, glufosinate, causes birth defects in mammals [13], A Swedish study now links the top-selling herbicide, glyphosate, to non-Hodgkin lymphoma [14]. GM crops with bt-toxins kill beneficial insects such as bees [15] and lacewings [16], and pollen from bt-maize is lethal to monarch butterflies [17]. 8. A potential source of health hazards from GM crops is from the secondary horizontal transfer of transgenic DNA to unrelated species; in principle, to all species interacting with the transgenic plants [18]. The spread of antibiotic resistance marker genes to pathogens is the most immediate danger as this will further compromise treatment of life-threatening drug and antibiotic resistance diseases which have come back worldwide. However, the random insertion of foreign DNA into genomes associated with horizontal transfer of transgenic DNA can also result in many harmful effects, including cancer in mammalian cells [19]. The potential for horizontal gene transfer is now also acknowledged by sources within the US and UK Governments. 9. The possibility for naked or free DNA to be taken up by mammalian cells is explicitly mentioned in the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) draft guidance to industry on antibiotic resistance marker genes [20]. In commenting on the FDA's document, the UK MAFF pointed out that transgenic DNA may be transferred not just by ingestion, but by contact with plant dust and air-borne pollen during farm work and food processing [21], and cited several significant new findings bearing on the issue. 10. Thus, plant DNA is not readily degraded during most commercial food processing [22]. Procedures such as grinding and milling left grain DNA largely intact, as did heat-treatment at 90oC. The DNA of plants placed in silage showed little degradation of DNA, and the special MAFF report advises against using ensilaged transgenic plants in animal feed. 11. The letter from UK MAFF to US FDA also mentions new findings that the human mouth contains bacteria capable of taking up and expressing naked DNA containing antibiotic resistance marker genes and similar transformable bacteria are also present in the respiratory tracts [23]. 12. What both regulatory authorities have failed to consider is that transgenic pollens, which may have increased allergenicity and toxicity besides, will almost certainly spread far afield to the general public. Similarly, the current unregulated practice of feeding farm animals transgenic grain and plant remains, and transgenic

wastes, both ensilaged and otherwise, is endangering the health of farm animals and of human beings in spreading antibiotic resistance marker genes and other transgenic DNA. 13. Serious health concerns are also raised by the cauliflower mosaic viral (CaMV) promoter in transgenic DNA. The CaMV promoter, widely used in expression cassettes of transgenes, is known to contain a 'recombination hotspot'. One usual mechanism of recombination involves the double-stranded DNA breaking and joining with other double-stranded DNA. This has been identified as the mechanism generating many different lines of transgenic rice during a routine transformation experiment. Extensive recombination at the hotspot has taken place in the absence of the viral recombinase, indicating that the host plant cell can catalyse such recombinations [24]. Thus, the CaMV promoter has an enhanced capability to transfer horizontally, with potentially dangerous consequences. 14. CaMV is closely related to human hepatitis B virus, and also has a reverse transcriptase gene related to that in retroviruses such as the AIDS-associated HIV [25]. Thus, the CaMV promoter not only enhances horizontal gene transfer, but has the potential to reactivate dormant viruses (which are in all genomes) and to generate new viruses by recombination. 15. The British Medical Association, in their interim report (published May, 1999), called for an indefinite moratorium on the releases of GMOs pending further research on new allergies, the spread of antibiotic resistance genes and the effects of transgenic DNA. This position is fully in accord with the precautionary principle. 16. Contrary to the claims of the UK Government, no useful results can be obtained in the current massive 'farm-scale' trials of transgenic herbicide-tolerant oil-seed rape and maize where the spread of transgenic pollens cannot be controlled, and which make no attempts to monitor for horizontal gene transfer or for impacts on health [26]. 17. Research into sustainable, non-corporate agricultural systems which do not involve GM crops should be widely supported. Many of these systems have already resulted in increased yield and income for family farmers, diminished environmental impacts, and improvements in nutrition and health for all [27]. 1. The Genetic Modification Group of the ISP


The Genetic Modification (GM) Group of the ISP consists of scientists working in genetics, biosciences, toxicology and medicine, and other representatives of civil society who are concerned about the harmful consequences of genetic modifications of plants and animals and related technologies and their rapid commercialisation in agriculture and medicine without due process of proper scientific assessment and of public consultation and consent. We find the following aspects especially regrettable and unacceptable: * Lack of critical public information on the science and technology of GM * Lack of public accountability in the GM science community * Lack of independent, disinterested scientific research into, and assessment of, the hazards of GM * Partisan attitude of regulatory and other public information bodies, which appear more intent on spreading corporate propaganda than providing crucial information * Pervasive commercial and political conflicts of interests in both research and development and regulation of GM * Suppression and vilification of scientists who try to convey research information to the public that is deemed to harm the industry * Persistent denial and dismissal of extensive scientific evidence on the hazards of GM to health and the environment by proponents of genetic modification and by supposedly disinterested advisory and regulatory bodies * Continuing claims of GM benefits by the biotech corporations, and repetitions of these claims by the scientific establishment, in the face of extensive evidence that GM has failed both in the field and in the laboratory * Reluctance to recognize that the corporate funding of academic research in GM is already in decline, and that the biotechnology multinationals (and their shareholders) as well as investment consultants are now questioning the wisdom of the GM enterprise * Attacks on, and summary dismissal of, extensive evidence pointing to the benefits of various sustainable agricultural approaches for health and the environment, as well as for food security and social well-being of farmers and their local communities.

Sue Edwards Sue Edwards was born in the UK in 1942, has lived in Ethiopia since 1968 and now has Ethiopian citizenship. She was educated in England, Manchester (B.Sc) and Liverpool (M.Sc.). She is a taxonomic botanist, teacher and science editor by profession. She is Editor of the Flora of Ethiopia and Eritrea since 1984 (7 volume work covering the 6 500 - 7 000 species of higher plants found in Ethiopia and Eritrea, 4 volumes in print, 1 in press, last 2 in preparation). Since 1996, she has been the Director of the Institute for Sustainable Development (ISD) in Ethiopia. ISD started with a project with farmers and the Bureau of Agriculture of Tigray in Northern Ethiopia to help farmers improve their environment and productivity based on ecological principles. The package' is now being promoted in over 80 communities in Tigray. ISD also works with environmental clubs to link cultural diversity with biodiversity, and urban youth groups. ISD also works with the Environmental Protection Authority of Ethiopia and the African Union (formerly Organization of African Unity) in promoting the African Model Law on Protecting the Rights of Local Communities, Farmers and Breeders, and Regulating Access to Biological Resources, and African Model Law on Safety in Biotechnology. She is author/co-author of over 40 papers, and has edited and published more than 50 documents including books, reports, proceedings and booklets. Tewolde Berhan Gebre Egziabher Dr. Tewolde Berhan was born on 19 February 1940 in a small village near Adwa town in Tigray Region of northern Ethiopia. He joined Elementary School when he was 11 years old and then won a scholarship to the General Wingate School in Addis Ababa in 1955. On joining Addis Ababa University in 1959, he decided to study science and was granted the Chancellor's Gold Medal when he graduated with a B.Sc. in Biology in 1963. In 1966, he left to study for a doctorate in plant ecology at the School of Plant Biology, University of North Wales, and returned as Ethiopia's first qualified plant ecologist in 1969. From the time he graduated in 1963 until 1995, his academic base was in the Department of Biology of Addis Ababa University. His main responsibilities inside academia have been as Dean of the Faculty of Science from 1974 to 1978, and then Keeper of the National Herbarium from 1978 to 1983. It was during this period that the Ethiopian Flora Project was launched, with twin aims: to develop a national capacity in plant systematics and a competent national institution for research and

services in this field, and also to publish a modern Flora for the country. The first part of this aim has been achieved with the National Herbarium now having a senior staff of four doctorates in systematic botany, three in plant ecology, and an editorial office. The second aim of producing an eight volume Flora is still being realized with four volumes in print and two more in press. His other major post in academia was as President of Asmara University in what is now the independent country of Eritrea. During that period, he successfully negotiated a substantial grant for the development of tertiary science education, particularly in the applied fields of arid-zone agriculture, marine science, geology and some aspects of engineering. His career has also involved responsibilities outside academia. Between 1972 and 1982 he was leader of the IDRC-UNU sponsored research project "Research and Development in Rural Settings". Ethiopia was one of six countries which contributed to this international Project. In 1991, he left Asmara University to take up the post of Director for the Ethiopian National Conservation Strategy Secretariat. During the four years he was in post, a National Conservation Strategy was developed and debated in a participatory manner at all the main levels of government culminating in a National Conference where the final draft documents were debated and amended before being submitted to the Government for approval. As from March 1995, Dr Tewolde has been the General Manager for Ethiopia's environmental watchdog, the Environmental Protection Authority. Internationally, Dr Tewolde participated in the negotiations for Agenda 21 and the Convention on Biological Diversity, finalized in 1992. He also negotiated the Convention to Combat Desertification. He led the African and Like-Minded Group in negotiations for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, which came into force in September 2003. He also led the African Group and was a Bureau member in the negotiations of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture agreed in FAO. He is now a member of the Interim Panel of Eminent Experts, created by FAO in 2003, which is establishing a global fund for the conservation of crop genetic resources (Global Crop Diversity Trust). He has also worked with the African Union (previously the Organization of African Unity) in the development of two model laws: the Model Law for the Protection of the Rights of Communities, Farmers and Breeders, and for the Control of Access to Biological Resources , and the African Model Law for Safety in Biotechnology. In December 2000, Dr Tewolde was awarded a Right Livelihood Award (alternative Nobel Prize) for his leadership in the biosafety negotiations, and for his work in developing and promoting community and farmers' rights. His responsibilities in government have involved him in representing Ethiopia in several international fora as well as preparing official documents and reports. His first degree and doctorate were obtained in Oxford University, and his special research field was glacial dymamics and high-latitude climate change. He has worked as a field scientist in Antarctica, Greenland and Iceland, and taught for eleven years in the Geography Department of Durham University. One of his teaching specialisms was environmental management. He has written more than 55 books, including several university texts. He was heavily involved with the Mathry campaign, which led to the cancellation of two GM crop trials in Pembrokeshire in 2001. Cloned Cows Coming to Market?


Biotech Empire Andrew Bosworth, Ph.D. Meat from cloned animals - untested and unlabeled - is coming to supermarkets in the United States. A headline from The New York Times:

F.D.A. Says Food from Cloned Animals Is Safe "After years of delay, the Food and Drug Administration tentatively concluded yesterday that milk and meat from some cloned farm animals are safe to eat. That finding could make the United States the first country to allow products from cloned livestock to be sold in grocery stores. A poll this month from the nonprofit Pew Initiative on Food and Biotechnology found that while most consumers knew little about animal cloning, 64 percent said they were uncomfortable with it, with 46 percent saying they were "strongly uncomfortable." According to most dictionary-style definitions, "cloning" is the process of creating an identical copy of an original life form. But clones are not "identical" in the full sense of the word because something gets tweaked during the process of replication, and clones end up being defective copies of the originals. Many cloned animals die unexpectedly. They differ from normal animals at the cellular level, specifically in the lengths of "telomeres" (cellular structures which prevent a cell's chromosomes from fusing with those of another). Dolly, for example, was the first sheep to be cloned from an adult somatic cell, and she died prematurely. It seems that copies of originals - and copies of copies - are inherently flawed. What's true for the Xerox machine is true for life forms. But then the biological engineers fixed the problem, or so they thought at first. They produced a fresh batch of biologically younger cows - until, alas, they grew up too fast, and accelerated aging did them in. The FDA, whose parent bureaucracy was founded in 1906, does not test for accelerated aging or any dimension of this technology's inherent weirdness. The FDA was never in the business of measuring telomeres or other cellular exotica. So why clone animals for food in the first place? Donald Coover, owner of SEK Genetics, Inc. (a beef cattle semen distribution company), is favorably quoted in an FDA report: "The consumer is looking for a nutritious and wholesome product provided to them in a repeatable and reliable manner. If a consumer spends $30 on a steak dinner at a restaurant, they expect a great steak, but don't always get it." The quest for standardization in commerce is a familiar story. Henry Ford accomplished the mass production of a homogenous product, the Model-T car. "People can have the Model T in any color," Ford said, "as long as it's black." So the industrial process of Fordism has simply moved from the factory to the farm - and from the farm to the fork. The Model-T analogy is quite apt. Eric Schlosser, in Fast Food Nation, describes how chains like McDonald's developed assembly-line kitchens just as most Americans were getting their post-war wheels. Drive-up restaurants soon followed. But massproduced food led to a decline in food safety and to a sharp rise in obesity and

disease. If anyone doubts this, they can view Morgan Spurlock's brilliant movie, Super Size Me, in which his McDonald's-only roadtrip landed him in the hospital. The fast-food industry covets the uniformity and predictability promised by cloning. Cloning aims to impose discipline upon the food supply, particularly upon burgers, whose production at present funnels an entire herd of cows into one burger: "In just 4 ounces, a typical burger patty is packed with the meat and fat of 50 to 100 cattle from multiple states and two to four countries. Eat two hamburgers a week as the average American does - and in a year's time the consumer samples a stampede: 5,200 to 10,400 cattle." The common hamburger, mixing the meat of dozens of cows, is bovine goulash. But cloning leads to the exact opposite situation. It will be possible for people the world over to bite into hamburgers made from a singular flawless cow, forever. That's right: McDonald's in Los Angeles, Tokyo and Mexico City could all be selling burgers made from the same cow, over and over. Perhaps Plato was right, and every object has a perfect form, even a cow. Plato did not think that perfection existed here on Earth, but then again Plato did not foresee cloning. As the bio-engineers would have it, cloning promises to progressively tease out Nature's faults, thus realizing civilization's quest for the perfect hamburger. Is cloned meat risky? The FDA insists that cloned livestock is "virtually indistinguishable" from conventional livestock (notice the word "virtually"). In addition to "virtually," another Orwellian term used by the food industry is this: "substantial equivalence." The FDA claims that cloned food is "substantially equivalent" to normal food... The FDA even insists that "cloning doesn't put any new substances into an animal, so there's no 'new' substance to test." The FDA's party line is that cloning is no big deal: "Clones are similar to identical twins, just born at a different time." 5 Not mentioned in the statement is that the twin born later tends to kick the bucket prematurely. Shared birthday parties, yes, but the FDA fails to plan for separate funeral arrangements. Most Americans feel that cloned food is unethical, unhealthy or simply disgusting. This is actually the main reason the FDA will not require mandatory labeling. Will some food companies be motivated to issue "Clone Free" labels? The better question is: Will they be allowed to? After all, the label "Hormone Free" for meat is "unapprovable" because FDA sided with the major slaughterhouses, refusing to allow a label that set such high standards. No solid study exists testing the effect of cloned food on human health, partly because the technology for cloning mammals has only been around since about 1996. One study, however, is about to be launched as a live experiment, with American consumers serving as guinea pigs. The Center for Food Safety describes the situation accurately: "Animal cloning is a new technology with potentially severe risks for food safety. Defects in clones are common, and cloning scientists warn that even small

imbalances in clones could lead to hidden food safety problems in clones' milk or meat. There are few studies on the risks of food from clones, and no long-term food safety studies have been done. Given that researchers do not understand many of the health problems that arise throughout the lifecycles of cloned animals, the FDA acted irresponsibly in assuming that the foods produced from these animals are safe for humans to eat." Furthermore, cloning animals advances the technology for cloning humans. In fact, the word "clone" was coined in 1963, when a biologist and "transhumanist," or "posthumanist," J.B.S. Haldane, presented a paper with this grand and sweeping title: Biological Possibilities for the Human Species of the Next Ten-Thousand Years. As the transhumanists forget, biotechnology has often been harnessed to the abuse of power, and grandiose hopes (and biological ones no less) projected across thousands of years of time reminds one of the racialist ambitions of the Nazis. Animal cloning is specifically reminiscent of Dr. Josef Mengele's twisted experiments on twins. It's a fine line between high-tech animal husbandry and human eugenics. But does the FDA think that animal cloning will lead to human cloning? "The FDA does not believe so..," the agency said, oddly talking about itself in the third person. Then the FDA concludes with this: "Additionally, there are unresolved issues regarding the broader social and ethical implications of the use of cloning for humans." Well, nothing that can't be sorted out eventually.

Vegetable Planting and Seed Saving Instructions


Arugula - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors just beneath the surface of the soil as soon as the soil can be worked and the danger of a hard frost has past. For a continuous supply, seed a new row every three weeks throughout the summer.

Seed Saving: Arugulas will cross-pollinate. Separate varieties by 1/4 mile. Allow plants to bolt and form seed stalks. Seedheads may need to be protected from bird damage and rain when drying on the plants. Seeds are produced over a 2-3 week period and will require repeated harvesting. Beans - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has past and the soil and air temperatures are warm. Plant seeds 1" deep and 2" apart in rows 24" to 36" apart. Pole beans will need support. Snap varieties will produce abundantly if kept well picked throughout the summer. Saving Seed: Bean flowers are self-pollinating and almost never crosspollinate. As a precaution never plant two white seeded varieties side-by-side if you intend to save seed because crossing may occur but not be visible. It is always best to save seed from plants that ripen first and are free from disease. Harvest seed pods when completely dry, crush in a cloth or burlap sack and winnow the seeds from the chaff. Beet - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors in the spring, 6-8 seeds per foot 1/2" deep in rows 20-24" apart. Minimum soil temperature must be 40 deg. F. Saving Seed: Biennial. Beets will cross-pollinate. Varieties must be separated by 1/2 mile from other beets the second year when going to seed. Beets are fairly frost tolerant and will overwinter in mild climates if well mulched. In northern climates trim leaves to 2" and store roots in slightly damp sawdust or sand in a root cellar over the winter. Roots store 4-6 months at 32-40 deg. F. Replant in the spring and harvest seed heads when dry. Broccoli - Planting: Sow indoors 1/4" deep in pots or flats 8 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Plant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart when a light frost is still possible. Saving Seed: Biennial. Broccoli will cross-pollinate with all other Brassica oleracea, so isolate by 1 mile the second year when going to seed. Do not harvest heads on plants you intend to save for seed. Carefully dig the plants and pot them in sand. Store plants between 32-40 deg. F. Plant back out in early spring and allow to bolt. Harvest seed pods when dry and clean by hand. Carrots - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors in the early spring 3-4 weeks before the last frost or as soon as the soil can be worked. Sow seeds 1/4" deep making sure to firmly press soil against the seeds for good soil contact. Keep moist for optimal germination. Thin to 1-4" depending on the size of mature carrots. Saving Seed: Biennial. Carrots will cross-pollinate, so isolate 1/4 mile from other carrots and Queen Annes Lace the second year when going to seed. Dig up carrots in the fall before a hard frost. Trim the tops to 1" and store roots in slightly damp sawdust, sand or leaves in a root cellar over the winter. Replant in the spring and harvest seed heads when dry.

Cauliflower - Planting: Sow indoors 1/4" deep in pots or flats 8 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Plant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart when a light frost is still possible. Seed Saving: Biennial. Cauliflower will cross-pollinate with all other Brassica oleracea, so isolate by 1 mile the second year when going to seed. Do not harvest heads on plants you intend to save for seed. Carefully dig the plants and pot them in sand. Store plants between 32-40 deg. F. Plant back out in early spring and allow to bolt. Harvest seed pods when dry and clean by hand. Cabbage - Planting: Sow indoors 1/4" deep in pots or flats 8 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Plant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart when a light frost is still possible. Seed Saving: Biennial. Cabbage will cross-pollinate with all other Brassica oleracea, so isolate by 1 mile the second year when going to seed. Do not harvest heads on plants you intend to save for seed. Carefully dig the plants and pot them in sand. Store plants between 32-40 deg. F. Plant back out in early spring and allow to bolt. Harvest seed pods when dry and clean by hand. Corn - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed. Corn will not germinate properly when the soil is still cold in the spring. Sow seeds 1" deep every 3-4" in rows 3-4' apart. Thin the seedlings to 8" apart after the plants come up. Corn should be planted in a 3-4 row block (instead of one long row) to ensure well filled-out ears. Saving Seed: All corn varieties are wind-pollinated and will cross-pollinate with each other. Varieties should be hand-pollinated or isolated by 1 mile to ensure purity. Allow ears to dry on the plants, harvest and shell. Cucumbers - Planting: Sow 6-8 seeds outdoors 1" deep in 12" diameter hills spaced 6' apart each way a week after the last frost when soil is warm. Pinch off all but 3-4 of the strongest seedlings. Can be started indoors in pots or flats 3-4 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. Saving Seed: Cucumbers will cross-pollinate, so isolate 1/4 mile from other cucumbers. Fruits for seed should ripen past edible stage and begin to soften and turn yellow. Cut lengthwise, scoop out seeds, wash clean and dry. Seeds are dry when they break instead of bending. Eggplant - Planting: Start seedlings indoors 6 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Transplant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart. Using landscape cloth or black plastic can accelerate growth and productivity in cooler climates. Seed Saving: Eggplants will cross-pollinate, so isolate 1/4 mile from other eggplants or plant in insect-proof cages covered with screen. Let the fruits grow far past maturity. Seeds are much easier to remove from overripe fruits.

Most seeds are brown and are usually located in the bottom portion of the fruit. Gourds - Planting: In mild climates sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Northern growers may need to start seedlings indoors 3-4 weeks before the last frost. Plant 6-8 seeds 1" deep in 12" diameter hills spaced 6-8' each way. Saving Seed: Hard-shelled gourds will cross-pollinate, so isolate 1/4 mile away from other L. siceraria or hand pollinate. Okra - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors 1/2-1" deep when the soil temperature has warmed. Okra thrives in warm weather and should only be planted in full sun. Plants should be thinned to 6-8" after germination. Okra will produce abundantly if kept well picked. Seed Saving: Okra's large decorative blossoms are cross-pollinated by insects very easily. Varieties can be kept pure by covering blossoms with cloth bags before they open, or you can isolate varieties by 1 mile from each other. Allow the okra pods to turn brown and dry on the plant. Harvest before seedpods split open enough to drop seeds onto ground. Onion - Planting: Start seedlings indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds in flats 1/4" deep and spaced 1" in all directions. Transplant as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring. Seed Saving: Biennial. Onions cross-pollinate and should be isolated by 1 mile from other onions going to seed. Select only the best bulbs for seed. Bulbs store 3-6 months at 32-45 deg. F. Plant out bulbs in early spring and allow them to form seed heads. When the heads start to dry, cut off, dry further and thresh. Peas - Planting: Peas can be sown as soon as the soil can be prepared in the spring. Sow seeds 1/2" to 1" deep with 3" between seeds in rows 24" apart. Climbing peas will need support. Double rows can be planted on each side of a trellis. Peas thrive in cool weather. Saving seed: Peas should be separated by 50' to ensure pure seed. Select the healthiest plants for seed. Allow pods to dry on the plant before harvesting and separate seeds from pods by hand. If birds start eating the seeds before the pods are completely dry, they can be harvested slightly green and brought indoors to dry. Peppers - Planting: Start seedlings indoors 8 weeks before transplanting. Sow seeds 1/4" deep. Keep soil moist and near 80 deg. F. using bottom heat. Peppers may take two weeks to germinate. Transplant outdoors when daytime soil temperatures are near 80 deg. F. and nighttime temperatures are above 50 deg. F. Saving Seed: Peppers will cross-pollinate, so separate by at least 500' or plant in insect-proof cages covered with window screen. Select peppers that are ripe, fully colored and show no signs of disease to save for seed. Remove seeds off core and place on a paper plate to dry. Popcorn - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors only after the danger of frost has passed. Corn will not germinate properly when the soil is still cold in the spring. Sow seeds 1" deep every 3-4" in rows 3-4' apart. Thin the seedlings to 8" apart after the plants come up. Corn should be planted in a 3-4 row block (instead of one long row) to ensure well filled-out ears.

Seed Saving: Runner beans will cross-pollinate with other runner beans. Varieties must be separated by at least 1/2 mile to ensure pure seed. Another option for raising pure seed is to bag the blossoms before they open with a cloth bag. It is necessary to "trip" or shake the blossoms daily to release the pollen, imitating bee activity. Soybean - Planting: Sow seeds outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and the soil and air temperatures are warm. Plant seeds 1" deep and 2" apart in rows 2436" apart. Seed Saving: Soybean flowers are self-pollinating and almost never crosspollinate. To ensure absolute purity, separate by the length of the garden from other soybeans. Minimum soil temperature should be at least 40 deg F. Saving Seed: Biennial. Varieties must be separated by 1/2 mile from all other Beta vulgaris when going to seed. Will overwinter in mild climates if well mulched. In northern climates trim leaves to 2" and store roots in sawdust or sand in a root cellar. Roots will store 4-6 months at 32-40 deg. F. Replant in the spring and harvest seed heads when dry. Tomato - Planting: Sow indoors 1/4" deep in pots or flats 6 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Plant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart. Indeterminate vines will require support. Saving Seed: Cross-pollination between modern tomato varieties seldom occurs, except in potato leaf varieties which should be separated by the length of the garden. Do not save seeds from double fruits or from the first fruits of large-fruited varieties. Pick at least one ripe fruit from each of several plants. Plants can be trellised to keep well contained and the fruits off of the dirt, or the plants can be allowed to sprawl on the ground. Seed Saving: Tomatillos will not cross-pollinate. Thin seedlings to one every 12". Excellent grown on black landscape cloth.

Jelly Melon - Planting: Sow 6-8 seeds outdoors 1" deep in 12" diameter hills spaced 6' apart each way a week after the last frost when soil is warm. Pinch off all but 3-4 of the strongest seedlings. Can be started indoors in pots or flats 3-4 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. Seed Saving: Jelly Melon will not cross with Cucumbers, Cucumis sativus or Melons, Cucumis melo. Fruits for seed should ripen past edible stage and begin to soften. Cut lengthwise, scoop out seeds, wash clean and dry. Seeds are dry when they break instead of bend. Red Malabar Spinach - Planting: Sow seeds 1/2" deep indoors 5-6 weeks before the last frost or outdoors when the danger of frost has past. Plants should be spaced 6" apart. Do not plant before air temperatures are consistently between 70 and 80 degrees. For best yield, harvest continually. Seed Saving: Malabar Spinach will not cross-pollinate with garden spinach, Spinacia oleracea. If two distinct strains of Basella rubra are being grown, isolate by 1/4 mile or cage to ensure purity. When seed capsules turn from green to brown the seeds are ready to pick. Garden Huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum) - Planting: Sow indoors 1/4" deep in pots or flats 6 weeks before the last frost. Thin seedlings when 2" tall and transplant into individual pots. Plant outdoors 24" apart in rows 36" apart. Seed Saving: Garden Huckleberries do not cross-pollinate. To save seed simply take ripe fruits and crush them in a bowl. Add water to the bowl and the seeds will sink and the skin and pulp will float. Separate the contents and wash the seeds in a strainer. Allow seeds to dry and store in a cool dry area.
