It was interesting that out of the six of us, most of us were strangers to each other even though we all worked in the electronics industry locally, said Merle Weight, one of the original six. The only thing we had in common was that we were working in the discipline of trying to control the effects of ESD. Early on the Chapter participated in a regional trade show by providing a technical session The original six included, Gary Johnson and manning a booth on the exhibit floor. Symposium
The symposium includes a large collection of exhibitors from around the world presenting products, solutions, services, and publications serving professionals in the EOS and ESD fields. Exhibits are open to the public and do not require symposium registration. Other events include the Welcome Reception, Awards Breakfast, Professional and Technical Womens Reception, Attendee Lunch, and the ESD Association Annual Meeting and Luncheon. The general chair of this years Symposium
is Donn Bellmore, Universal Instruments Corporation; the vice general chair is Gianluca Boselli, Texas Instruments; and the technical program chair is Horst Gieser, Fraunhofer IZM. The EOS/ESD Symposium is sponsored by the ESD Association in cooperation with the IEEE. It is technically co-sponsored by the Electron Devices Society. At the beginning of this year, I informed readers that ESDA would increase educational opportunities. I am pleased with the success and proud of the quality program
that was delivered at the 2007 IEW. I look forward to a very successful second event. Our talented volunteers who coordinate this effort will do a magnificent job for our organization, and most importantly, for our members p

Q & A Column
Technical inquiries received at ESDA headquarters are directed to info@esda.org. If you would like to submit a technical question to be presented in the newsletter, please send an email to info@esda.org and type Q & A Column in the subject line. Question: I am hoping that someone can answer this question for me; is there any type of ESD trainers certification available to teach the fundamentals to our ESD Coordinator? Also, could you tell me please, when wearing an ESD smock that has long sleeves with snaps at the end, if a person is wearing a or short-sleeved shirt, can they push the ESD smock sleeve up or roll it up a bit to be comfortable, or should it remain down and snapped? I know that there are smocks available with and short sleeves so I ask with this in mind wondering if as long as the clothing underneath is not exposed at all, could the ESD smock sleeve be rolled or pushed up? Answer: We offer what we call ESD Program Manager Certification. This is a 10tutorial set that people complete (generally takes two years) followed by an eight-hour written exam. We have offered the test for two years now*. There are a total of 13 Certified ESD Program Managers out there now (out of a group of about 25 or so that attempted the test). Please review the ESD Program Manager information on our website at www.esda.org and click on Certification. If you are interested in getting some training done quickly to get a person started, perhaps one of the consulting companies shown in our Buyers Guide on the website could offer a custom package for you. There are several that do this all the time. Generally, companies that use smocks in their ESD Control Program allow the sleeves to be rolled up as long as the street clothing is not exposed. I have seen this written into many ESD Control Program Plans. *Please note that ESD Association will offer the ESD Professional Certified Program Manager exam at the EOS/ESD Symposium in Anaheim, California, on September 21, 2007. Contact headquarters at 315339-6937 or info@esda.org to register or for more information.p

January 7, 2008. Final presentations for the workshop in PowerPoint format must be received by April 14, 2008. These PowerPoint slides will be included in the Presentation Handout along with a CDROM that will be distributed during the Workshop. There will be no formal report published. Due to an agreed alignment through the ESD Association, presentation of your work at the IEW will not preclude a subsequent, but more detailed submission, to the EOS/ ESD Symposium. For any questions please contact the Technical Program Chair, Horst Gieser (Horst.Gieser@izm-m.fhg.de).

ESD On Campus
ESD R&D Goes Beyond Lightning in Florida
University of Central Florida (UCF a.k.a. Under Construction Forever)
By Steven Voldman, Ph.D., ESDA Board of Directors, ESD On Campus Program Manager, IEEE Fellow Yes, ESD engineers know that Florida is famous for ESD lightning research but did we know that ESD semiconductor research is a field of interest in Orlando? In the Spring of 2007, the University of Central Florida (UCF) served as a host for the ESD on Campus talk. Professor J.J. Liou of UCF, who is also affiliated with Zheijang University, served as the host faculty member. Today, University of Central Florida is one of the fastest growing campuses in the United States. Fueled by the growth in the Florida tourist industry and local Floridians, engineering and research buildings are opening today with new offices, labs and courtyards. With the boulevards, and palm trees visibly being added to the campus plan, the UCF students nicknamed the university UCF a.k.a. Under Construction Forever. Ted Dangelmayer is the president of Dangelmayer Associates, L.L.C., and has been a member of the ESD Association since 1982. As a result of receiving the Outstanding Contributor award, he is a lifetime member of the ESDA. He has attended all of the ESDA Symposia with the exception of 1983 due to the birth of his younger son. He is currently President of the Northeast Chapter of the ESD Association and a member of the national ESD Associations Standards Committee, Education Committee, Corporate Sponsorship Program Chairman, and Human Resource Committee. Ted retired from Lucent Technologies in 2001 as a Consulting Member of the Technical Staff. He then became Director of Technology and Program Design for the Professional Services Division of Ion Systems in Berkeley, California. Ted Dangelmayer has held leadership positions such as President of the ESD Association, Chairman of the ESDA Standards Committee, General Chairman of the EOS/ ESD Symposium, and Chairman of the Lucent Global ESD Leadership Team, . Ted has published numerous magazine articles, technical papers and two editions of his book, ESD PROGRAM MANAGEMENT. Ted holds three patents, is NARTE Certified, and has successfully completed the ESD Association ANSI/ESDA S20.20 Course for Program Managers and Consultants. Hobbies and interests include tennis, sailing and golf. He started playing tennis when he was three and still plays two or three times a week during the summer. For relaxation, he enjoys sailing and boating in Ipswich Bay off of Cape Ann in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Golf competes for his time in the summer. In recent years, he has become an avid platform tennis player. This is an outdoor winter sport played in the coldest weather New England has to offer.

Symposium
About the Symposium The ESD Association, in cooperation with the IEEE, is sponsoring the 30th Annual EOS/ESD Symposium. The event will be devoted to the understanding of issues related to electrical transients and electrical overstress, and the application of this knowledge to the solution of problems in consumer, industrial and military applications, including electronic components and manufacturing, as well as in systems, subsystems and equipment. Technical Papers The Technical Program Committee solicits paper contributions, including data and analysis that advance the state-of-the-art knowledge, enhance general knowledge, or discuss new topics related to EOS/ESD. Paper Presentations at the Symposium will be in the electronic Power Point format. Absract Authors must submit a 50-word abstract and a four-page (maximum) summary of their work. The summary must clearly state the purpose, results (e.g., data, diagrams, photographs, etc.), and conclusions of the work. Summaries must also include references to prior publications and state how the work enhances existing knowledge. Authors must designate the appropriate technical area related to their work and submission. Presentation of work at the International ESD Workshop (IEW) will not preclude an abstract submission, as long as the submission follows the guidelines and is a continuation of any work reported at the workshop.
