When creating a sculpture or architechtural feature, it all starts with an idea, then a drawing. It is important that every piece of work is individual and unique to the client. Sometimes a private commission or part of an architects vision. Many different materials are used and should sit harmoniously within their final surroundings, transforming the space with creativity, texture and function. JR

S C U L P T U R E , A N T H O N Y SLIM

Anthony Mascola, owner of Toni & Guy and Bedhead Studio wanted a sculpture for his London penthouse. From a range of design drawings Anthony chose this design. A four foot maquette was then made, firstly to allow any design changes prior to the full size sculpture be started. The final sculpture was made using a selection of steel rods, twisted and bent to shape. The sculpture was delivered in two halves, then welded together on site. A series of other sculptures have since been commissioned by the client, in different styles and positions. JR

Above, The design for the front gates are based on a tree, with branches twigs and a large sycamore handle. The effect of walking through the gates under the large sycamore tree bcomes part of the Tree House interior.

T h e eco pro j ect

The client, Will Anderson bought a plot of land in Clapham. His dream was to build his own Eco friendly house, with self-sufficient energy sources such as solar energy panels and thermal ducts drilled deep under the propertys foundations. The client wanted to create something organic and unique, using as much reclaimed material as possible. The front garden needed a perimeter fence the idea was to create a design that looked like twigs and branches, flowing and random, like a forrest. JR

The back garden perimeter was designed as a craggy rock relief, which breaks up the reclaimed brick wall. The effect breaks up the wall with undulating natural lines and complementing the plants nearby . This in effect becomes the focal point when veiwed from the living space, mimicking the fiery colours of the adjacent foliage.

<< The Tree house was designed to compliment thelarge sycamore tree in the front garden. The gates are designed to be an extension of the tree. The handles themselves large cast iron sycamore spinners. These where forged by hand, then left to rust in salt solution, then finally sealed with varnish. This leaves them with a reddish brown hue, in keeping with their natural surroundings. JR

Sky perimeter framing the London skyline

The original brief was to create a secure gate guarding the rear entrance to the clients penthouse. From origional designs, ranging from organic, flowing metal rods to the angular mondrian - inspired composition. The client decided on the latter, as this would contrast to the baroque interior of the apartment. The client decided to expand the brief and take the abstract cubist design around the entire perimeter.
The result is a meandering framework that protects the internal space while framing the horizon and sky in its abstact forms. In total there is over 40 metres of sculptural perimeter fencing running along the balcony and roof terrace areas.

The stair platform was designed for an artist. She had commissioned an architect to design the interior of her mews house in Kensington, London. They wanted a light, airy staircase which linked the entrance hall to the first floor living area. Due to limited space, a gallery walkway was required to link the living space with the other rooms. A stainless steel mesh was used allowing light to pass freely and create a modern, clean look in keeping with the rest of the minimal styled conversion. JR 15

Above and left, The client, Coco Renovations wanted to create a platform area to join the garden with the house, without losing any light that fell into the basement space. This was achieved using 40mm glass with a maintenance free stainless box section frame. The section covering the entrance to the basement uses a glass walkway creating a transparent bridge to the garden and allowing daylight into the basement.

Above, NCM Limited are a design and project management service who wanted a glass platform with a slightly nautical flair. The end result gives the impression you are on a luxury cruise liner. The wavy wooden bench and handrail further add to the illusion.

Glass platforms and balconies are a fantastic way to optimise your living space and provide a wonderful place to relax. By using steel and strengthened glass, it is possible to have that additional space, without compromising on direct sunlight to interior or adjacent rooms. JR

ACCESS

This cable Ballistrade designed, built and fitted for Smirk in a contemporary home refurbishment. Designed to sit above an existing room, this served as the access point to the dressing area. The clean lines and cable were used to keep a light feel to the small upstairs dressing area. JR

Above, Spiral staircases and balconies. The client wanted something forged and intricate. The final design was agreed after several sample pieces were made and tested on site. The client was heavilly involved in bringing the final designs to fruition, giving a very personal vision to his living space. The intricate web of twisted and forged steel with detailed infills creates a fluid movement between balconies and staircases. Finished with a hard wood rail, giving a cosy baroque feel to the open plan apartment.

Top, Centre Corners. Designed for an exclusive warehouse development, this staircase and ballustrade runs through 3 floors and along a hanging balcony area, following horizontal lines that break at intervals, crossing and joining corners. Inset, a matching kitchen was designed and fitted using the same horizontal lines and modern steel finish. Lower left, Centre Corners. Ground floor to first floor staircase, flat steel with swirling finish. Lower right, Arc balcony. Designed along with a dining table. Finished in bronze to give an ancient, regal feel.

As open plan living becomes even more popular, so how we move between these spaces becomes much more important when designing a home or office environment. On these pages we have tried to show a variety of designs and finishes, all unique and in keeping with their spaces. JR

As we become more aware of our personal security, having a secure perimeter to your home becomes a priority. However security can still be an attractive, well-designed and considered architectural feature of your home..JR

This page, Rising Sun Conservatory. Client, Shaun & Audra Simons. Designed for the clients love of the great outdoors as well as his passion for all things oriental. The rising sun design blends the walls with the roof leaving the focal point the rising sun on the gate. Its site amongst the rich foliage, not obscuring the garden views or sky works in perfect harmony. Providing security for the rear of the house and a wonderful place to sit, contemplate and relax. Opposite upper left & right, Elephant Gates and matching handrail. Opposite lower, C-Scroll Gates. Client, Bartholomew Landscapes. As the main gates already existed, the client was keen to keep them and match their style. The traditional style was captured and blends well with this Hampstead family home, providing safety for the children and security for the house. The landscaped gardens and ornate stonework are the perfect setting for these gates and perimeter security.
