Building strong partnerships can be in-
strumental in almost every venture, from
business and education to life.
On Jan. 30 at the 2012 Mayors Excel-
lence Awards Gala, the Calgary Educational
Partnership Foundation (CEPF) recognized
some of the partnerships between business-
es and educators.
The partnership between Project H.O.P.E
and the Golden Hills School Division
(GHSD) was awarded under the special
needs section.
Project H.O.P.E relies on the strength of
partnership between school and communi-
ty to be sustained, its a very important part-
nership and a strong partnership that is go-
ing on 18 years old, said Sheila Konschuh,
one of the founders of Project H.O.P.E.
Project H.O.P.E. began in Westmount
Elementary with about fve children. The
project has been such a success that it has
continued to grow over the years and dif-
ferent types of therapy have been added to
enhance the project for the kids.
The partnership between GHSD and
Project H.O.P.E. ensures that the children
have access to the therapy during school
hours, while in their own schools. Some of
the therapy being offered includes music
therapy, art therapy and adaptive physical
education programming.
Larry Tucker, a trustee with GHSD, said
Project H.O.P.E. provides the therapists and
direction while GHSD provides the educa-
tional side, such as classrooms, teacher sup-
port and educational assistance.
We went to the Mayors Excellence
Awards on behalf of all the schools in the
area and they gave us two awards. One for
the Project Hope and one for the Siksika
schools, said Mayor Steve Grajczyk.
Siksika Education in partnership with
First Book Canada were also recognized at
the awards gala.
Bruce Dobbin, principal of the Siksika
Outreach School, said they were always
looking for a way to give back to the com-
munity. Through First Book Canada, the
school is able to keep its Family Literacy
Centre equipped with books and available
to the community.

Our community does not have a li-
brary so access is next to nothing for
good literature for pre-schoolers and
their families, said Dobbin.
The Centre has been student-run
since 2009, and it provides much
needed access to literature for all com-
munity preschoolers.
The junior and senior high at-risk
students have developed a sense of re-
sponsibility and pride in their efforts
with the younger kids. The students
engage the preschoolers in pre- and
post-reading activities, and through
the program are able to donate the
book to the child to take home. The
child can then re-read it, share it and
learn the pride of owning books while
increasing their exposure to literature.
They get a whole activity based on
a book, based on literacy. Its really
fun for the kids, the preschool kids
are engaged. They like it because the
book is typically fun, lots of pictures,
lots of activities, said Dobbin.
The students quite enjoy it, they get
that sense of belonging, that sense of
pride because they are helping and
serving and they see the value in that,
so its a win-win.
Dobbin said there have been close
to 3,000 books donated in the past
couple of years since partnering with
First Book, and they have been able
to give away close to that through the
Family Literacy Centre. Dobbin goes
through an application process with
First Book Canada, and the successful
applicant receives free books directly
from the publisher.
Dobbin said they werent expecting
the award.
Thats just a bonus, were just so
proud of our kids, theyre engaged
and thats our key. Were an at-risk
outreach school so if you can get kids
engaged and reconnected, thats what
its all about. Were really proud weve
engaged a good core of our kids into
this program, said Dobbin.
Local schools honoured at gala
Siksika and First Book Canada along with Project
H.O.P.e and Golden Hills School Division were
all recognized at the mayors excellence Awards
on Jan. 30 for their partnerships with each other.

Do you have a scrap car sitting in
your driveway that you want to get rid
of? The Strathmore Elks Lodge may be
able to help you. The Elks are collect-
ing scrap cars as a way to raise money
to give back to the community. For ev-
ery car collected there will be a general
receipt issued from the Lodge on the
blue book value, up to $1,000.
Businesses can usually use this as a
promotional expense, said Don Pere-
pelkin, secretary for the Strathmore
Elks.
Its very similar to what the Kidney
Foundation does where you have an
old vehicle you want to get rid of. Basi-
cally give us a call, and well come pick
it up. People will fll out a form saying
that they give us their car and are ba-
sically donating it to the club and the
proceeds from it will go back into the
club.
Perepelkin said the Crossfeld Elks
have an annual demolition derby and
took a car, built it up and raffed it off
on CJay92. He said if the cars are decent
enough maybe the Strathmore Elks can
sell them off.
Perepelkin said it could be a lot of
work, and feels most of the vehicles
will have to go to the wreckers, but for
any that dont, fxing them up and sell-
ing them could be an option.
Perepelkin frst got the idea after see-
ing that an Elks Lodge in Ontario had
collected scrap cars and were fairly suc-
cessful.
I thought well why not do it here
and help take some old cars off the
road, and help the club out as well as
distribute it to the community, said
Perepelkin.
Were looking for any vehicle that
we can use the proceeds towards the
club.
The Elks raise funds through cater-
ing, bartending and other activities. The
money they raise is then distributed to
organizations, and clubs, within the
community. The vehicles dont have to
be mobile, but do have to be easy to get
to. They also must have wheels, rims,
so that they are able to roll. Anyone
wishing to donate their vehicle must
own it and be able to legally donate it.

This man rolled his truck

she was driving the truck at

ICBCs investigators found

With no mountains to jump from, veteran handglider michael Schulte uses his modifed pick-up truck
to provide the air speed and lift he needs to get him high in the air above stubble felds near Glei-
chen. A sport that typically runs from April-November at the latest, Schulte with 20 plus years fying
experience says he has never before been able to handgilde in this area in the winter months. But this
season he accomplished fights in December, January and now February. He hopes the mild weather
holds so he can fy in march and have the bragging rights of handgliding every month of the year in
this area. Left: As the truck continues to pick up speed michael continues to climb. At approximately
2500 feet above the ground michael releases the tow-line from his glider and slowly makes his way
to the ground. With the lack of the warm thermal winds in the winter months each fights only lasts
about 20 minutes compared to several hours in the summer.

People may be wondering about the new billboards by
Holy Cross Collegiate and Strathmore High School. They
have catchy phrases, like cigarettes are killers that travel in
pack, promoting awareness and making good choices.
The billboards are a part of the Strathmore-Wheatland Ad-
diction Teams (SWAT) newest initiative.
Every month the message on the signs change. The signs
are meant to provide positive messages related to building
assets, encouraging positive behaviour in the community
and good reasons to not use drugs and alcohol.
There are community drug coalitions all over Alberta and
what they are, is theyre an attempt to get multiple agen-
cies with different expertise looking together at a common
problem, which would be the problem of substance abuse
within your community, said Crystal Wahl, a chairperson
with SWAT.
SWAT frst came to the area in 2007, main focusing on pre-
venting risky behaviour and providing education.
If somebody has an addiction problem there are people
we can refer them to and theres treatment centres, but we
were looking at how can we prevent it in this community
more, said Wahl.
Our local coalition uses those 40 developmental assets to
decide what can we do to build those assets and thus reduce
the use of the risky behaviour.
The 40 developmental assets come from a report on put-
ting positive youth development into practice. Included in
the 40 developmental assets are both external and internal
assets that a youth has, or could have. For external assets
some of the examples fall under three headings: support,
empowerment, boundaries and expectations. Under each
of the four listed are subheadings listing the different as-
sets that fall under them. The internal assets main headings
include a commitment to learning, positive values, special
competencies and having a positive identity.
Educating youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol is
one of SWATs main initiatives, and so there is an information
night coming up this month.
Because of all the recent tragedies related to ecstasy use,
both in this community and in Calgary, we are going to have
an information night, said Wahl.
It will take place at the Youth Club of Strathmore build-
ing at 170 Brent Blvd, and the session will run from 7 p.m.
to 9 p.m. It is a drug awareness night, and Wahl says SWAT
members will be making the presentation. There will be dis-
cussion about ecstasy and its effects, and also about other
common drugs.
SWAT is also looking for members. Meetings are held one
Thursday a month at noon at the FCSS offces, and anyone
interested can contact Sharon Tibeau at Family and Commu-
nity Support Services at 934-5335.

How to convention broadens horizons
Jenna Campbell
Times Contributor
The students at Sacred Heart Acad-
emy (SHA) were once again given the
chance to experience what it is like
to go through an educational con-
vention, similarly to what an educa-
tor would experience at a teachers
convention. At SHAs how to con-
vention, Feb. 1 (Grades 1-3) and Feb.
2 (Grades 4-6), community mem-
bers, parents and teachers were able
to share with the kids their talents,
skills and knowledge through infor-
mative sessions. The students rotated
through the variety of sessions, some-
times learning something the kids
would never have chosen to experi-
ence otherwise.
We thought wed give them an op-
portunity to see how you can move
from different sessions, learn new
strategies, tricks and have some fun
with it as well, said SHA teacher and
organizer of the how-to convention,
Dayna Moreau.
The different types of sessions were
left open with no basic theme, and
the intent was to bring in as many
parent and community volunteers as
possible. Throughout Moreaus expe-
riences of the how to convention, the
most positive feedback she receives
from the kids comes after the more
hands-on sessions which require the
students to get involved. The students
experienced proactive sessions, rang-
ing from making fubber to dancing
in a Zumba class.
Sometimes its cooking pancakes,
sometimes its rolling bandages. It
could be ftness, yoga, exercises, just
any random thing that a parent would
like to share their knowledge, skill
or talent (with the students), said
Moreau.
Moreau said the variety of sessions
the how to convention had are very
similar to an actual teachers conven-
tion. Just like a teachers convention
some of the sessions were geared for
kindergarten level, while others ap-
plied more to a high school level.
I believe that there are a number
of sessions out there that every teach-
er could fnd, at least two or three,
that would help them in their class.
Whether they want to go learn more
hands on or if they want to get more
knowledge based stuff, theres a vari-
ety, said Moreau.
Moreau is uncertain as to whether
or not she will be spearheading the
event again next year. Every fall it is
determined which committee within
the school will be in charge of a par-
ticular group of activities for that year.
Next year SHA will again be open
to community members, parents and
teachers to bring to the convention
their knowledge which they would
like to pass onto the students.
On a side note, in commemoration
of SHAs 10th birthday, the school is
in the process of creating a cookbook
full of recipes from SHA current staff
and past alumni.
The introduction will also include a
brief history of how the school came
to be, and it is anticipated that the
cookbooks will be ready for purchase
from the offce by late spring. More
information about the cookbooks can
be found by contacting Vice Principal
Lauren Zulyniak through the school
at 403-901-1544.

1 3/4 cup all-purpose four 1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
1/2 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup light brown sugar 1 egg
1 tspvanilla extract 1/2 cup berry sugar
1 pkg of chocolate candy kisses, unwrapped
Preheat the oven to 375. In a medium bowl, combine four, baking soda,
and salt. Set aside. In another medium bowl, place the chocolate hazelnut
spread, butter, and both sugars. Using a hand mixer, cream the ingredients
together, about 3 minutes. Add the egg and vanilla and blend until incorpo-
rated. Stir in the dry ingredients, just until incorporated.
Shape the cookie dough into walnut-sized balls. Rolls the balls in the berry
sugar, pressing to adhere. Place the cookies on a heavy baking sheet
about 4 inches apart. Bake for 8 minutes. Remove the cookies
from the oven. Quickly place a chocolate kiss in the middle of
each cookie. Return the cookies to the oven and bake for
another 3 minutes. Cool the cookies on a wire rack.
The origins of Saint Valentines Day are
not clear. It is thought that there were a
number of local fertility festivals in Europe
in pre-Christian times. These were often
in the middle of February. Many people
also thought that birds chose their mates
at this time of year. Around the year
1380, the English poet Chaucer wrote
a poem for the frst anniversary of the
engagement of King Richard II to Anne
of Bohemia. This is thought to be the frst
association between celebrations of
romantic love and St Valentines Day on
February 14. The connection remained
important throughout the middle ages.
In the mid-19th century, there was an
increase in interest in Valentines Day,
frst in the United States, then in Canada.
It was promoted by manufacturers of
paper lace and cards, as a means of
increasing their sales. Gradually, this date
was seen as an occasion for a man to
present gifts to a woman with whom he
had or would like to have had a romantic
relationship. It was also customary for
lovers to exchange handwritten notes.
Commercially produced cards have now
largely replaced these.
The red rose was the favorite fower of
Venus, the Roman goddess of love. The
color red stands for strong romantic
feelings making the red rose the fower of
love.
The heart has been the most common
fgure of romantic love over the decades.
Ancient cultures believed the human soul
lived in the heart. The heart may be linked
with love because the ancient Greeks
believed it was the goal of Eros, known as
Cupid to the Romans. Anyone shot in the
heart by one of Cupids arrows would fall
hopelessly in love. Because the heart is
also closely linked to love, its red color is
considered as most romantic.
Cupid is a symbol of Valentines Day.
Cupid was associated with Valentines
Day because he was the son of Venus,
the Roman god of love and beauty. Cupid
often appears on Valentine cards and gift
tokens holding a bow and arrows, as he is
believed to use magical arrows to arouse
feelings of love.

Parliamentary Report
The House of Commons resumed sitting this
week and Members of Parliament are looking
forward to a productive pre-budget Session. Our
Conservative governments top priority remains
jobs and economic growth.
We will continue to try and balance the federal
governments books in two or three years. Bud-
get 2012 will present the results of our request
that each department identify 5-10
per cent budgetary reductions. We
will pursue reforms to Canadas immi-
gration system focussing on bringing
in skilled workers. This will address
much needed labour shortages for
the Alberta economy. We will pass the
legislation to scrap the long-gun reg-
istry and eliminate taxpayer subsidies
to political parties.
The Leader of the Government in
the House of Commons, the Hon. Pe-
ter Van Loan, said this week, Canada
has strong advantages -- a very strong
fscal position, the lowest debt of any of the major
G8 countries. How do we ensure that we stay in
that position? Our priorities remain the same -- job
creation and economic growth. What were able to
do right now, perhaps, is focus on more medium-
and long-term structural changes.
One of my frst duties this week in Parliament
was to speak in the House in support of Bill
C-25, legislation that will create Pooled Retire-
ment Pension Plans (PRPP). This Bill will allow
millions of Canadians to have access to a work
place pension for the frst time. This is important
to many workers in our largely rural and smaller
town constituency where there are fewer large
frms that employ hundreds of workers and of-
fer pension plans. We are delivering low-cost
pooled pension plans to beneft small businesses
and self-employed Canadians. The pooled nature
of PRPP investments and the auto-enrolment of
employees are expected to give members greater
economies of scale and lower costs
compared to smaller, single-employer
group RRSPs. PRPPs will be subject
to pension standard rules. In fact, the
management of PRPPs will be held
to a higher standard than traditional
group RRSPs.
Over my tenure as your Member of
Parliament for Crowfoot, the vast ma-
jority of you have supported control-
ling and reducing federal spending
and eliminating budgetary defcits.
We understand that cutting spend-
ing is a diffcult political exercise.
But taxpayers are prepared to sacrifce in order
to free-up tax dollars from being spent on inter-
est payments to service public debt. In turn, these
funds can be used to either further reduce debt or
be spent on programs and services.
The less debt we have to pay, coupled with re-
duced federal spending, leads to further reduc-
tions in the taxes hard-working Canadians pay.
Canadas low-tax environment is attracting invest-

Fule for Thought
There seem to be a lot of differences between
men and women, but one of the ones that comes
to mind is our reactions to pain and sickness.
Ive always been told that when women are sick,
theyre still able to function and get chores/work
done. That does match up with my experience,
as when Im sick, I tend to fnd the darkest room
in the house, shut myself away, and expect medi-
cines/soup, to be delivered regularly!
Last night I had a really sore neck. Youve read
that Ive been hitting the weights and treadmill,
so I think I may have overdone it (of course for
me, actually doing ANYTHING would have been
overdoing it!).
However, the big problem was that I was too
lazy to go down to the kitchen to get something
to take. This made me also wonder why so many
of us keep medicines in the cupboard above the
stove. Where do we learn to do this, and why?
Anyway, here I was in pain, too lazy to go down-
stairs, so I thought Id check the master bathroom.
There, searching through all the creams, polish-
es, fles, bondo (autobody stuff!) I saw it. It was
almost bathed in a glow (due to my incredible
pain) I had hit the motherload of pain killers
(men this is going to shock a little). I found it,
and Im not ashamed to say it, I popped a Midol!
I have to say, its amazing stuff within minutes,
the neck pain had subsided, and I was able to re-
lax. However, I do have to admit I may have felt
a little different. I may have cried myself to sleep,
and I was sure Debbie tried to make a move on
me. Doesnt she realize that sometimes we men
just want to be held?
As I was dozing off, it made me wonder how
tough women also are. I mean theyre the ones
who, when pregnant have to go through all sorts
of twinges, pains and sickness. If it was ME who
had to be pregnant, I would stop at one child
seeing a video of childbirth would convince me of
that! Also, the pain of labour looks pretty bad. Im
pretty sure Id be like Elvis and ask for all kinds
of painkillers Id have my own trailer-pharmacy
like him RIGHT in my backyard! In fact, Id prob-
ably try to fnd a Costco that deals only with pain-
killers!
Anyway, back to the Midol (and guys, seriously
good stuff takes away the pain, the side
effects may be worth it!) I slept all night, or I
thought I did, because this morning Deb noticed
her cabinet for nail polishes was left open!
Now, I dont remember looking through any
nail polishes, but when she showed me the open
door, I wondered (I also noticed she had some
lovely shades) whoa maybe there are prob-
lems with my strategy from last night! I do have
to admit, the Midol worked like a charm, but I do
have the urge to get Fried Green Tomatoes or
Thelma and Louise on Netfix!

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot
Parliamentary Report
As your Member of Parliament, I
know many seniors are asking, Will my
Old Age Security cheque stay the same?
Other constituents - close to retirement
- are asking whether Old Age Security
will be there for them when they reach
65 years of age.
The answer to both questions is yes.
All MPs in the Conservative National
Caucus are committed to protecting re-
tirement income for todays seniors, and
for future generations of retirees. Cana-
dians receive retirement income from a
variety of sources, including the Canada
Pension Plan and Old Age Security. The
Canada Pension Plan is funded by pre-
miums from each of our paycheques
and it is on a safe, secure, and sustain-
able path. Old Age Security, on the other
hand, is funded from general govern-
ment revenue and is not sustainable in
its current form.
Since it was created in the 1950s, the
OAS has never been adjusted to refect
our aging population, nor has it been
updated to incorporate the fact that
people are living longer and collect-
ing OAS for a longer period of time. In
1975 there were seven working taxpay-
ers for every senior. Because Canadas
population is getting older, today there
are only four working-age Canadians for
each senior. By 2030, the total number
of seniors will nearly double, leaving
only two working-age Canadians for
each senior. Amidst these changing de-
mographics, the annual cost of the Old
Age Security program is projected to in-
crease from $36 billion in 2010 to $108
billion in 2030.
In Canada there is a signifcant demo-
graphic shift that is happening. Over the
past few days, the opposition has cre-
ated, and indeed perpetuated, fear and
confusion among Canadians. They are
intentionally misleading Canadians, and
particularly our seniors, about the old
age security program.
Why is Canada aging? There are two
main factors. First, our birth rate is low.
In fact, it is less than the level needed to
replace ourselves. At the same time, av-
erage life expectancy for each individual
has gone up. The average Canadian can
now expect to live to 81 years old.
When it comes to longevity, our coun-
try ranks among the worlds leaders. We
are living longer than ever and we are
enjoying more years of good health as
we get older. By 2030, 25 per cent of the
population will be over 65, compared to
the current 14 per cent. This new reality
will have a serious impact on the labour
force. With fewer workers, our produc-
tivity will decline, which could slow
down our economic growth.
With fewer workers to pay taxes, we
will also face a shortfall in revenue. A
shrinking tax base means it will be hard-
er to fnance our unfunded social pro-
grams. Looking to the longer term, some
programs, like OAS, will soon become
too expensive and unsustainable if not
addressed.
OAS is 100 per cent funded by tax dol-
lars on a pay-as-you-go basis. There is
no reserve; there is no fund.
It has not been changed to address
the fact that very soon there will be an
unprecedented number of Canadians re-
tired and eligible for OAS. The outdated
nature of the OAS program becomes im-
portant when we return to the point that
taxpayers fund it each and every year.
This means that todays Canadian
workforce pays for todays OAS recipi-
ents. And tomorrows Canadian work-
force will pay for tomorrows OAS re-
cipients.
Today, OAS is the largest single trans-
fer that we make to Canadians, at around
$36 billion a year. By 2030, it will be
$108 billion, nearly triple the cost. The
number of basic OAS pension benefcia-
ries is expected to almost double. The
per cent of GDP expenditures will in-
crease to 3.14 per cent, in 2030, account-
ing for billions of dollars in increased
costs. By that time, as I mentioned, we
will have fewer Canadians contributing
to the tax base and active in the work-
place, compared with those retired. With
those dramatically changing costs and
statistics, the current OAS program will
present a tremendous burden on tomor-
rows workforce and taxpayers if it stays
the way it is.
I guarantee all of my constituents that
any changes to Old Age Security will not
affect anyone currently receiving bene-
fts, nor will they ever affect any indi-
vidual now nearing retirement.
There will not be a cent cut from
pensioners, or from those who are ap-
proaching retirement, Prime Minister
Stephen Harper told the House of Com-
mons during Question Period last week.
Other Canadians, who are not near re-
tirement, will receive substantial notice
of changes to Old Age Security, to en-
sure they have ample time to plan for
their future.
Everyone I have spoken with recent-
ly in our riding agrees that we do not
want the Old Age Security program to
become unsustainable in the long-term.
Our Conservative government will take
responsible action to ensure fnancial
stability for future generations of seniors
and give them confdence that Old Age
Security will be sustainable and avail-
able to them in their retirement.

Marihuana possession search warrant execution
On Feb. 2, at around 1:30 p.m., members of the Rockyview-Chestermere
Fire Station #59 responded to a fre alarm at a residence along the 600 block
of East Chestermere Drive. Chestermere RCMP members also responded to
assist. The fre alarm was called in by an occupant of the residence. It was de-
termined the fre alarm was due to a water spill on to the main electrical panel.
The fre fghters entered the residence and cleared it for any other occupants or
potential hazards. While inside this residence the fre fghters reported a strong
smell of marihuana coming from the basement. This information was passed
on to the Chestermere RCMP members on scene.
RCMP members also smelled the strong odor of marihuana from outside
of the residence forming reasonable and probable grounds to arrest the two
female occupants of the property at the time.
While performing scene security, pending the completion of the search war-
rant, a 46 year old male occupant of the residence came home and was also
arrested outside. This male admitted to the police that there was marihuana
inside the residence and it was his.
Judicial authorization was sought from the Calgary Justice of the Peace
Hearing Offce to authorize the search and seizure under the Controlled Drugs
and Substances Act (CDSA) of this residence. At approximately 8:40 p.m. on
Feb. 3, members of the Chestermere RCMP Detachment executed this search
warrant.
No other persons were located inside the residence. Found and seized from
inside the residence was approximately a pound of cannabis marihuana and
small amounts of hash and hash oil. There were no indications to reveal the
residence was used for a marihuana grow operation.
The 46 year old male will be charged for possession of marihuana Contrary
to Section 4(1) CDSA and has been released from custody for a Strathmore
Provincial Court. Both female occupants were released from custody with no
charges to be laid at this time.
The Chestermere RCMP recognize this drug seizure occurred mainly as a
result of the close working relationships forged with our local fre service.
If anyone has any information in this crime or any other please contact the
Chestermere RCMP at (403) 204-8777 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477
or through the internet at www.tipsubmit.com. Crime stoppers will pay cash
rewards up to $2000 for information that leads to an arrest, the recovery of
stolen property or seizure of illegal drugs. Crime Stoppers does not subscribe
to call display and the identity of the caller will remain anonymous.

Youth advocates approach county council
Sharon McLeay
Times Contributor
Five students from the Strathmore Youth Assem-
bly asked council to appoint a member to their
group, which is dedicated to long-term solutions
for youth in the Strathmore area. Their aim is to
create positive activities which will redirect youth
from criminal activity into constructive venues.
The goal is to create a safe environment for youth,
help mentor understanding of societal rules and
provide education about community leader-
ship and government procedures. Some of their
ideas are: participating in an anti-drug campaign,
a graffti wall where artists could display their
work, and dealing with family violence issues.
The group meets after school in the high schools
every second Wednesday of the month. They ap-
proached council for a $3,000 donation to cover
some operating costs and gain special speakers
for the group. Council said a donation may be
available through community enhancement funds
and will contact the group later with their reply.
AREA RECREATION CENTRE
Council heard an update from Craig Stone, rep-
resentative for Strathmore Golf Course Arts and
Recreation Foundation, about the new recreation
centre that will be proposed to its membership at
the March 15, stockholders meeting.
We couldnt in good conscience bring this for-
ward without feedback from our shareholders,
said Stone.
The plan includes a $6.5 million facility which
would include banquet facilities, meeting rooms,
a fne arts theatre, bowling facility, virtual golf and
a high end restaurant upgrade. The Foundation
is expecting the improvements to serve the com-
munity on a year round basis. Plans were shown
to council as they had expressed interest in the
plans development.
This is not just for the golf course, but will be
an improvement for the whole community, said
Stone.
WASHBOARD CONDITIONS
Area residents complained of washboard condi-
tions on rural roads.
With it being warm and dry, we have been do-
ing quite a bit of grading, said Gerry Van Oost-
waard. But with the warm weather it just isnt
staying.
Crews are using fat blades on their graders and
looking for a little moisture to improve condi-
tions. However if a lot of moisture accumulates
the roads will be in trouble again. Van Oostwaard
said stockpiling of gravel from various sites is al-
most complete.
Telus temporary phone lines exposed
Sharon McLeay
Times Contributor
Telus representatives Errol Gordey, Southern Al-
berta Director of Planning and Engineering, and
Area Construction Coordinator Chris Macdonald
stood before Wheatland County Council to address
concerns over the companys negligence with in-
stalling permanent phone lines and leaving tempo-
rary lines exposed for years on end.
It is a matter of capital budgeting process and
there are a lot of competing priorities, said Gordey.
He went on to explain that there is a $4.8 mil-
lion budget divided over 54 counties in southern
Alberta. He further explained that the company sets
a higher priority on urban and business sites and
population density determines work priority stand-
ing.
Telephones to everyones house is just as impor-
tant if one person is on the line or if many people
are on the line, said Councilman Ben Armstrong.
Many areas in the county rely on landlines because
no cell phone service is available.
The company laid out 14 kilometres of perma-
nent line last year and just over 14 kilometres of
permanent line was done. He said there are sepa-
rate crews for each of the following processes: lay-
ing the temporary line, digging in and installation
of the permanent line, and follow-up cleanup, and
there are often delays between the various stages of
installation. If the county has construction to com-
plete, temporary lines are laid until that construc-
tion is complete.
We try to respond in a timely manner and coor-
dinate our work with the county construction, said
Gordey. We try to avoid laying out temporary line
where possible.
The cost of laying the line is about $30 per metre.
The company does not allot budgets for digging the
permanent lines and cleanup in the same year the
temporary line is laid, so there is no guarantee that
the money will be available to fnish the permanent
line in any one year. Each stage may cross over sev-
eral years of budgeting. If a temporary cable is not
on a major line, work is deferred, as there is not as
great a return on the companys investment.
Gordey stated that there were areas of the pro-
cess that were under the responsibility of other
agencies. Gordey indicated The Ledcor Group of
Companies did the permanent line replacement.
Ledcor only has one permanent crew and two tem-
porary crews for the Wheatland area. The crew to
plow the lines is located in Calgary.
Prior to digging, county crews call First Call, so
no line breaks will occur. Gerry Van Oostwaard,
County Public Works Superintendent, said once the
call is made, it is only good for 14 days. He stated
many times the period has lapsed before anyone
came out to mark the lines, so they had to initiate repeated
calls. He said it was helpful, if coordination were in place
to have a phone lineman on hand during digging, to repair
breaks if necessary.
When asked by council whether there was a timeline of two
or three years to permanent line completion, Gordey replied
the hard business fact is no.
Councilman Ken Sauve noted that he is aware of temporary
lines which have been exposed for over fve years.
Over a fve year period, cutting the grass in and around
the line and being charged if the cable is cut, gets a little old,
said Sauve.
Councilwoman Alice Booth stated that everyone in rural Al-
berta paid a $500 fee for each phone to have permanent lines
installed and there should be money available to install, and
bury, permanent lines and clean up the old lines.
In the last year, Telus has made available to new customers a
Smart Hub, which does not require use of landlines. However,
there were issues with contacting 911 services in rural areas
and some people may not be in range of a tower to get service.
Council asked that Gordey take their concerns to Telus f-
nancial division and provide written feedback as to how the
ongoing issues will be resolved and continue working closely
with the Public Works department to improve service.

The tale of Cinderella and her three evil stepsisters
is coming back to Wheatland Elementary on Feb. 15.
This isnt the frst time the school has had the stu-
dents perform their musical version of the story.
We decided that we would go back and perfect
one that we had already done, said Donna Carlson,
one of the coordinators.
The school has done several musicals and a few
years ago, when they had frst opted to start using the
choir in the performances, they did a production of
Cinderella. Carlson said they have decided to redo the
production, in order to do a better job of it.
This is a little bit different than the regular Cin-
derella. Were not necessarily going with the classic
costuming. The fairy godmother is very disorganized
and her hair is going to be all rumpled and she just
hasnt got her act together really, said Carlson.
Geena Schramm and Ann Sauve will both be in the
production, with leading roles. Schramm plays Cin-
derella, and Sauve is the fairy godmother.
Its just fun being able to be Cinderella, said Sch-
ramm.
Both girls know the classic story of Cinderella, and
have their favourite characters from the story.
I think I liked the coachman and the footman the
best, they were kind of silly, said Schramm.
I like the fairy godmother, said Sauve.
Last year both girls had roles as trees and dancers
in the production of Red Riding Hood, and had been
looking forward to their chance to audition for a role
in this years performance. Both girls admit to being a
little nervous, but also very excited.
Schramm is looking forward to having her cousin,
Rosebud actress Cassia Schramm, see her on stage
this time.
Its really exciting because my cousin, shes an ac-
tor at Rosebud and we always go and visit and see
her shows and its just so exciting for me to see, said
Geena.
It will be free admission for the performance, which
begins at 7 p.m. on Feb. 15, but there will be a dona-
tion box set up for anyone wishing to help out.

Edgefeld ASP gets third reading
Shannon LeCLair
Times Reporter
The Edgefeld Area Structure Plan
(ASP) received second and third read-
ing on Feb. 1. The development is
expected to follow along the Ranch
Market style, and developers are
proposing a potential of 1,400 units,
which would see approximately 3,600
people fll the 325 acres east of town.
There will be an emphasis on con-
nectivity, said Rose-Mary Damiani
with Brown and Associates Planning
Group, and there will also be a right
of way allowance on the east side of
the development to allow for future
connections if needed. A section of
the 325 acres will be developed for
commercial uses, with the rest set to
be residential, green spaces and path-
ways.
HigHway committee
Mayor Steve Grajczyk and Coun-
cillor Bob Sobol will be the council
representatives on the Highway Re-
alignment Committee when the time
comes. The purpose of the committee
will be to assess future potential is-
sues resulting from the realignment.
The Director of Engineering and Op-
erations Jesse Parker, or his desig-
nate, will also be on the committee.
The committee has no scheduled end
date, and the plan is for it to remain in
effect until all areas of concern have
been presented to council for review
approval.
ammonia detection equipment
Administration was directed to bring
the ammonia detection equipment up
to standards at the Family Centre. It
was not budgeted for in 2011, and the
cost is approximately $18,050 plus
GST to bring it up to code. Council ap-
proved the upgrades and the money
will be coming out of the Family Cen-
tre Capital Reserves.

The RCmP held its annual Red Coats for Kids
tournament in Strathmore from Jan. 25 to 27. The

local schools for athletic departments. The town
was also given the framed picture shown above
as a way of saying thanks for hosting the tour-
nament. Vince Olson, left, mayor Steve Grajczyk,
Cory Burton and Scott Burge.

In 1086, The Doomsday Book re-
corded a village in the County of York-
shire, England with the name Laycock.
Like others of British origin, it was frst
assumed by the original owner from
a township descriptive of the name in
Craven, Yorkshire and the possessor of
that surname and property has been al-
ways esteemed the Chief of The Laycock
Family in Britain.
I was privileged to be permitted to
review the family autobiography of
Stu Laycock, which provides a history
of this remarkable pioneer family in
the U.K., United States. and Canada.
Stus grandfather William followed two
younger brothers Thomas and Joe to
Canada arriving in 1887. The
two brothers had sent news of
free homestead land in West-
ern Canada then the North-
west Territories which per-
suaded them to take the giant
step across The Atlantic.
They arrived in Calgary
just four years after CPR did.
Initially, they stayed at The
Grange farm, built by Joe, until they
had built their own farm. Im told the
Grange still stands today in the vicinity
of 4th St NW and 42nd Ave NW.
Between 1886 and 1890, they built
houses in N.W. Calgary and Shepherd,
for all the family. Laycock Park in the
Thorncliffe Greenview Community in-
cludes a monument which reads: Dedi-
cated to the pioneers who built this
great country of ours and in honour of
the Laycock Family, who homestead-
ed here when Alberta was part of the
Northwest Territories.
As the Alberta climate appeared per-
fect for good quality dairy cattle, Thom-
as brought in the frst registered pure-
bred Holsteins, while Joseph brought
several prize head from Toronto. Thom-
as and his sons became very involved
in the dairy stock industry. Thomas later
became a director of The Calgary Ex-
hibition & Stampede. Distribution was
somewhat primitive in 1900, and most
milk was peddled from milk cans car-
ried on a horse drawn wagon.
The Laycock Dairy Co. was built in the
Bridgeland District and opened for busi-
ness in 1910. Five years later they sold
this building to the Carlyle Dairy Co.
and all moved to Shepherd, where the
family-run Laycock Dairy continued in
business. The milk was shipped to Cal-
gary on the CNR passenger train from
Janet Siding. At this time they had about
70 head of cattle and horses.
Stu Laycock arrived in 1923, the
youngest of seven children. He had
three brothers and three sisters. He was
born at the old Holy Cross Hospital and
lived in Shepherd until 1948 where he
attended Janet Elementary School which
taught Grades 1-9.
After leaving school, he spent his frst
year working at the Renown Flour Mill
in Ogden, (which was demolished last
fall). Then he spent a year working for
a seismic company, before going into
partnership with his brother and buying
a dairy farm in Strathmore. This farm
was located at the present site of the
Seed Mill on East Lake Blvd. They sold
this after six years, and Stu went to work
for James Richardson & Sons in Calgary,
where he became a grain inspector.
In 1947, he married Merla Marshall,
and they had two sons and a daughter,
who have provided Stu with
six grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
In 1958 they had moved to
Standard, where Stu became
a Grain Buyer for the next 17
years. He returned to the oil
patch in 1975 as an oil lease
contractor, a job he enjoyed
for the next 34 years. He re-
tired in 2009 at the age of 86, and moved
to Lambert Village in Strathmore. Merla
passed away in 1979.
In his younger years he was a man-
ager and hockey coach for teams in the
Southern Alberta Junior Leagues. All of
his children and grandchildren could
skate, and the boys became very good
hockey players.
The family autobiography, entitled
The Laycocks Pioneers of Alberta,
Their Descendants and Ancestors is
over 200 pages of photographs, family
trees, rural directory maps, birth cer-
tifcates, and records of marriages and
deaths. It is a true detailed history of all
members of this family.
Items include the death of an ancestor
while serving under Lord Nelson at The
Battle of Trafalgar in 1859.
Amongst this mans acquaintances
were Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid
and other members of The Hole-in-the-
Wall Gang.
The neighbour Charlie Russell who
became a well known painter of the Old
West.
And, many, many more.

did You Know?
In the Middle Ages young men and women drew the names from
a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear
this name pinned on their sleeves for one week. This was done
so that it becomes easy for other people to know your true feel-
ings. This was known as to wear your heart on your sleeve.

The Strathmore and District Playschool is
pleased to announce the addition of Janique
Lagac as their Administrator. Janique started
with the Playschool this past November and
has offcially taken over all of the registration
duties, as well as bookkeeping and overseeing
the daily operations of the Playschool for both
the 3 and 4 year old programs.
Janique was born and raised in Eastern
Qubec where she obtained her Education
Degree and taught for 3 years before
relocating to Strathmore in 2000.
After which she taught at the elementary
level in Calgary for 7 years before
becoming a stay at home mom.
We are confdent that Janique, together with
our teachers, Gail Reid and Tanya Molnar,
will make a dynamic team to continue
providing a caring, playful environment for
all the children that attend our school.
After two wins this past
weekend, including
a 2-1 home win over
Blackfalds on Feb. 4,
the Wheatland Kings
closed out the 2011-
2012 regular season
with a 18-17-1-2 re-
cord, good enough for
third place in the South
Division. The Kings will
open the playoffs with
a best-of-seven series
versus Cochrane be-
ginning Feb. 17.

The Wheatland Kings con-
cluded their most successful
campaign in team history by
winning four straight games
to close out the regular sea-
son, including two victories
this past weekend.
The local junior-b team de-
feated the second-place Co-
chrane Generals 3-2 on the
road Feb. 4, before posting a
2-1 over the Blackfalds Ford
Wranglers the following day
at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
With the pair of wins, the
Kings closed out the season
with a franchise best 18-17-
1-2 record, good enough for
third place in the South Divi-
sion.
It was an outstanding
weekend not for the faint of
heart, laughed Kings head
coach Doug Murphy. Were
really happy the guys are
playing really well. The last
two games were against real
high-quality teams and we
found a way to get the win
in both games. Its exactly
the way you want to be play-
ing going into the playoffs.
The Kings entered the
weekend in must-win mode,
trying to avoid falling into
fourth place and facing the
ffth place team in a best-of-
fve series.
By fnishing in third, the
Kings earned a frst-round
bye and almost two weeks
off before facing the Co-
chrane Generals in a best-of-
seven series, starting Feb. 17.
There was certainly pres-
sure once we stumbled
(and lost) in Stettler, we
knew that most likely we
would have to win (the re-
maining games to fnish
third), explained Murphy.
There was defnitely a relief
when the game ended Satur-
day night. You pretty much
knew that Coaldale was go-
ing to get three wins (against
the lowly Banff Bears), so if
we wanted third place, we
would have to win all of our
games.
At the beginning of the
year, we had two main goals;
one was to fnish above .500
and we wanted to fnish in
second or third place, so
were happy with the way
the (regular) season ended
up.
While Coaldale and High
River battle in the frst
round, the Kings will have
11 full days of rest before
their playoff series begins.
Its huge to get the extra
week of rest, said Murphy.
We just fnished playing fve
games in a weeks time and
they were tough games. We
have guys with aches and
pains it gives us a chance
to heal and get rested up.
If the regular season is any
indication, the best-of-seven
series between these two
teams will be a close battle.
The Kings went 1-2-1 ver-
sus the Generals, with all but
one game being separated
by a single goal.
Were defnitely going to
be in a battle, said Murphy.
Like I said before, they are
a well coached team, they
have a winning tradition and
they know what it takes to
win.
Defensively, they control
their own zone very well
and offensively, they con-
stantly pressure you. They
have three guys forecheck-
ing low and the defence
arent afraid to pinch. We
need to adapt our game like
we did Friday night.
We need to be much bet-
ter in our end and we need
to be moving the puck much
quicker when we get it. We
need to be fnishing around
the net.
The Kings open the best-
of-seven series on Feb. 17
when they travel to Co-
chrane. Game 2 is in Strath-
more on Feb. 18 at the Fam-
ily Centre, while Game 3 is
Feb. 21 in Cochrane.
Game 4 shifts back to
Strathmore on Feb. 22.
Games 5-7 (if necessary) will
keep alternating locations on
Feb. 24, 25 and 28. All games
begin at 8 p.m.
Kings quest begins

Strathmore Handi BuS update
It is through generous donations from local businesses and
community members that truly make the Handi Bus Association
a success and with that in mind the Board would like to extend
their sincere appreciation for our donations received in 2011
along with donations to-date for 2012
Thank you to the Strathmore Elks, the Cheadle Lions and
EnCana Corporations. With the help of your donations, our goal
of $50,000.00 in donations is a reality.
The Handi Bus Board and staff would like to inform our
clients, that because of the positive outcome, we are mov-
ing forward for future plans in order that we may provide the
best service possible. We welcomed Sylvia Westgard of the
RC Legion Auxiliary to the Board while applauding the many
years of service and sacrifce of Mr. Bruce Thompson. The
Board agreed to purchase a plaque in his memory. We also
acknowledged Wanda Coldwell for her years of commitment
and thanked her for taking an important role on behalf of the

We thank all of our clients who continually support and
utilize the Handi Bus service. With your patience and coopera-
tion, we strive to serve you with the best service that we can.
Your safety and satisfaction is our priority. It is understood that
due to an inevitable change of cost and the constant struggle
to maintain an affordable service, we rely on the continued
support from donors throughout the year.

Rhiece Cordes is off to San Jose this month with her club volleyball team,
the 403 Selects. Cordes has been a member of the team for the past two
seasons, and also plays on her schools team.

The school volleyball season may be over for the year,
but for one Strathmore teen club volleyball is in full swing.
Power hitter Rhiece Cordes played on her Holy Cross Col-
legiate (HCC) team, and has begun her second season with
the 403 Selects out of Calgary.
Many of Cordes family plays, or have played, volleyball,
and mom Nicole Cordes is the coach of the Jr A HCC girls
team. Darren Perizzolo, Cordes gym teacher, was the one
who suggested she try out for the 403 Selects and she has
been happy to be a part of it since.
I love it, its great, said Cordes.
Club volleyball is a more intense version of volleyball. I
would say Im learning at a faster pace just because its more
committed. There are a lot of other clubs out there but 403 is
really based on having a family sort of experience with the
girls, and just really having an experience that will sort of
affect your life, and not just volleyball.
This month Cordes will be heading to San Jose with her
Local youth chases her dream
15U team to compete in a 16U tourna-
ment. Gaining experience, and focusing
on further developing skills is just one
more thing Nicole Cordes likes about
having Rhiece play with the 403.
The club really focuses on the
younger ages and developing their
skills, really focusing on developing
the skills very well so when they get to
the higher levels they have that totally
down, said Nicole.
The reason they go to the States is
the club believes that its really good
exposure for the girls, because thats
where the colleges and universities in
the US scout for players for scholar-
ships.
All the girls on the 18U team that
played last year, I think all of them got
a scholarship somewhere. Thats the
clubs goal is to have you leave after
18U and with a scholarship to some-
where.
Last year the club had a chance to go
to Stanford University and look around.
Rhiece said it was a good experience
because it helps give a heads up on
what the players may be looking for as
far as universities.
I always talk about Stanford a lot
because it would be really cool to go
there, but Im not totally sure. I think
I want to go somewhere kind of fur-
ther away from homejust because it
would be a really good experience and
just to travel and see different parts of
the world, said Rhiece.
Provincials will be held in Calgary
this year, and nationals are in Toronto
in May. Rhiece said every year the girls
also do a training session in Canmore.
The team spends the weekend together
in a house and they fll their days in the
gym training.
Rhiece has also been playing ringette
since she was in Grade 3, and said next
year she may have to give it up if the
403 Selects ask her back. Practice takes
place three days a week. The team will
have a chance to play in three Alberta
Volleyball Association tournaments,
provincials, and nationals.
The Strathmore High
Spartans and Holy
Cross Hawks faced
each other on the
courts Feb. 6. Both
Hawks teams were
able to pull a victory
over the Spartans, but
not without facing a
good fght to the end.

DIGGENS, Betty
January 29, 1929
- February 5, 2012
Betty passed away at the Strathmore Hospital on
February 5, 2012 at the age of 83. She is survived
by her three sons and their families; Ronald (Annie)
and their children Lynette (Lyle) and Katie as well as
Lynettes children Shanice and Hailey and Katies
son Harlen; Brad (Katie) and their children Melissa
(Mike), Jennifer (Darren), and Samantha; Greig
(Brenda) and their children Jessica and Lenny; and
daughter-in-law Heather and her children Cary,

husband Ron in 2008 as well as her son Larry in
1989. Betty was born in Selkirk, Manitoba, and
shortly afterwards her family relocated to Calgary
where she grew up with her seven siblings and
her loving parents, John and Irene. Betty met and
fell in love with Ron and the two of them raised
their family in Calgary. After the four boys moved
on Betty and Ron moved to the dream home they
built at Chestermere Lake. In 1994 they then
moved to Strathmore where they both lived until
they made the fnal move to be with all those that
went before them. Bettys sharp sense of humor,
the way she would confront every situation openly,
her quick wit, and the way she always said what
she felt at that time, was something all those that
knew her will miss forever. The family would like to
thank the home care personnel in Strathmore and
the wonderful staff and friends at the Strathmore

Ice Cats Ringette
Well the weekend tournament in
Strathmore has wrapped up. It was an
exquisite weekend and our very own
Strathmore Ice Cats did a fantastic job.
The frst game was against Medicine
Hat Blades at Friday noon. There was
a lot of buzz from the dressing room as
the Ice Cats all started to gather.
Parents thought the buzz was be-
cause there was no more school for the
Ice Cats for the day as no goals were
scored for the frst nine minutes. Then
the Ice Cats opened up, scoring eight
goals in the remaining frst period. The
Ice Cats didnt let up and played relent-
lessly showing all the moves they have
been working on throughout the past
months, scoring another four goals in
the second. First game under the Ice
Cat belt was a 12-0 win!
The second game did not come until
8:15 Saturday morning. It was an early
start but as the Ice Cats gathered the
excitement quickly became all about
the upcoming game. The Ice Cats were
taking on the Calgary NW Disco Rings.
The Ice Cats knew they would be a
tough team as many of the other Cal-
gary teams were worthy opponents.
The defensive play was strong and
the offensive was even more impres-
sive. After the frst period, the Ice Cats
narrowly led with a 3-2 score. It was
a back and forth game until there was
nine minutes left and the Ice Cats took
the kept the game at home. Another
game was within the win column with
a score of 12-6.
The third and fnal game for the Ice
Cats took the girls to Standard. The Ice
Cats were putting a lot of pressure on
themselves wanting a win so badly to
end the tournament with three straight
wins. The Red Deer Ring Devils were
already at the Arena when the Ice Cats
start to arrive. Coach Lana, Casey, and
Kevin had a team talk (as they do before
every game) and the Ice Cats came out
of the dressing room ready to roll and
ready to skate to win! The frst period
was defnitely a crowd pleaser. The Ice
Cats were checking hard, skating even
tougher. After the frst period it was 6-6
in favour of the Ice Cats. Was defnitely
not a huge lead and the Ice Cats need-
ed to continue to put the pressure on
Red Deer. The little talk between pe-
riods kept the focus, and the Ice Cats
were intent to put another in the win
column. The Ring Devils did not let up
but when the fnal buzzer sounded, the
Ice Cats were taking a fnal win with a
score of 9-6.
The Ice Cats showed the true spirit of
a team, and were truly amazing this past
weekend. All the Ice Cats got a point in
some way shape or form, whether it be
via a goal or an assist. Tessa Davidson
was solid between the pipes and kept
the Ice Cats on the way to wins. Strath-
more Ice Cats goals scored by Cayley
Boschee(7), Ainsley Olson (7), Justine
Larson (5), Shelby Lane (4), Reagan Bo-
gusky (3), Mackenzie Hansen(3), Laura
Sader(2), Mackenzie Duggan (1), Han-
nah Arsenault (1).
Of course Ice Cat goal scorers are
nothing without the Cats setting up the
plays, Megan Brooks, Payton Jensen,
Avery Aleman and Makayla Grant. Each
and every one of our Ice Cats is truly
remarkable and played absolutely fan-
tastic. Yeah Ice Cats!
Ice Cats end weekend on high note
The Strathmore Fire & ice Junior B team claimed the silver medal at the Laurie Ruppe memorial Tour-
nament this past weekend. With the help of their affliate players, the Fire & ice were a formidable team
against some very tough competition.
