DE-7200 VFD CENTRIFUGE BOWL DRIVE MOTOR JUNCTION BOX

PURPOSE
This Service Bulletin describes the investigation and conclusions relating to a fractured junction box on a Baldor bowl drive motor serial number A1103012047, which was installed on DE-7200 VFD Centrifuge Unit No. CF0005074. The bulletin also provides instructions for properly installing electrical cables to supply the centrifuge motor to prevent a recurrence.

EFFECTIVITY
This bulletin affects all DE-7200 centrifuges equipped with Baldor motors.

DESCRIPTION
Derrick technicians visiting reported that a junction box on a Baldor motor had fractured. The initial inspection revealed a failure of the pipe nipple that connects the junction box to the motor housing (see photo below). The fracture allowed the junction box to separate from the motor housing, exposing wires that must be contained inside the junction box for shielding from the hazardous environment. The initial report was followed by information that identified three other units in the same area having similar issues.

While investigating the incident on location, it was discovered that the power cable was not adequately supported after exiting the junction box. To remove any excess weight from the junction box pipe nipple, the power cable must be supported by means other than the junction box. This discovery requires immediate correction, as this extra weight may be causing and/or contributing to the fracture of the pipe nipple.

PROCEDURE
The following actions must be performed immediately. 1. Inspect all centrifuges in your fleet for any looseness where the pipe nipple enters the motor base. If any pipe nipple is found to be flawed, the complete motor must be removed from service immediately. 2. All motor corrections must be made by Baldor and/or its certified UL service providers. Any repairs not performed by Baldor negates its certification for explosion-proof environments. 3. Any DE-7200 centrifuge known to be installed with the power cables unsupported as described above must be shut down and remedial action taken immediately to provide proper support for the cables. Derrick Corporation has advised Baldor of the problem, and they are reviewing the design to determine the root cause. New motors are available for immediate replacement of any motor identified with this issue. A Derrick technician is currently on location to assist in the inspection process.
