the Burzynski Clinic

In 1967 when Dr. Burzynski was just 24 years old, he received an M.D. from the Medical Academy of Lublin, Poland, where he was first in his class. That same year, Burzynski made a significant discovery when he identified naturally occurring peptides in the body that control cancer growth. In the following year, he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and became one of the youngest candidates in Poland ever to hold both an M.D. and Ph.D. From 1970 to 1977, Dr. Burzynski served as a researcher and assistant professor at the Baylor School of Medicine in Houston, Texas, where his research was sponsored and partially funded by the National Cancer Institute. In May 1977, the Burzynski Clinic was founded in Houston, and over 12,000 patients have been treated there since. At the Burzynski Research Institute, where Dr. Burzynski serves as the President, the research on cancer causes and cancer treatment is continually advancing. Dr. Burzynski is the author and co-author of over 300 scientific publications and he currently holds 234 patents. He has been recognized in many articles and television interviews, and also received several prestigious awards for his contributions to cancer research and treatment. Other groups have replicated and expanded Dr. Burzynskis work, including the National Cancer Institute, the Medical College of Georgia, the Imperial College of London, the University of Turin Medical School in Italy, and the University of Kurume Medical School in Japan. After meeting some eligibility requirements, patients come to the Burzynski Clinic for a general consultation. A treatment plan is formulated by Dr. Burzynski and thoroughly discussed with the patient. Each treatment plan uses innovative therapies in either oral or intravenous form, which may be combined with mild chemotherapy, if necessary. Nutritional counseling guidance is offered to every patient. Patients usually stay in Houston for one to three weeks on an outpatient basis to start treatment. They continue their treatment plan at home under the supervision of Dr. Burzynski and the assistance of their local physician. It is our goal for all patients to return to the comfort of their familiar settings as soon as possible. We believe in treating the whole person - not simply the disease. Every patient gets a carefully developed treatment plan, based on his or her individual needs at that time. The clinic staff works personally with each patient at each step in the treatment process. Quality assurance guidelines are in place to assure the highest level of service for each patient. Personalized Treatment At the Burzynski Clinic we only use FDA-approved medications in treating cancer unless the patient is enrolled into one of our FDA-approved clinical trials. Clinical trials are open for patients with certain types of cancers. Patients should contact the patient scheduling department for more information. Patients must meet certain qualifications in order to be enrolled. Recent studies have shown a strong link between patients gene expression and the effectiveness of cancer treatment. The understanding that all cancers are associated with changes in gene expression (activity) led to dramatic changes in the diagnosis and therapy of cancer and to the creation of personalized medicine. Personalized treatment at the Burzynski Clinic is based on identification of genes involved in cancer in individual patients and the selection of gene-targeted pharmaceuticals that selectively kill cancer cells carrying these abnormal genes. Burzynski Clinic offers treatment plans, customized for each patient based on extensive testing and the results. Some of the tests include identification of oncogenes which enables the doctors to assess the patients prognosis and to determine the most optimal combination of medications. The goal is to match the right patient with the right treatment to achieve maximum effectiveness with minimum side effects.
