s=al&promo_code=E111-1 Certain Cocoa Dark Chocolate Protects Against Colon Cancer, says report (Clinica l Study) Not only is chocolate a sweet treat for the stomach, new research suggests that cocoa can help protect against intestinal diseases like colon cancer. In what th ey claim is the first study of its kind in relation to intestinal pathologies, a research team out of Spain has concluded that cocoa can act as a defense system for the body by interrupting the cell-signaling pathways involved in cell proli feration, a process which results in the formation of tumors. Their study also found that a cocoa-rich diet can help increase a natural proces s known as apoptosis or cell death, in which the body eliminates old, unhealthy cells, to make way for new ones a chemoprevention mechanism that helps ward off ca ncer advancement. For eight weeks, researchers fed rats a cocoa-rich diet 12 per cent and then induced the effects of cancer. Results showed that the rats that consumed a diet high in cocoa had significantl y reduced aberrant crypts, a common manifestation of colon cancer. Researchers at Queen Mary University in London found that neur ons from mice with high levels of endogenous omega-3 fatty acids were protected against stretching or oxygen starvation-induced injury. Scientists compared the neurons of mice expressing fat-1, a fatty acid desaturas e derived from the nematode C. elegans that converts omega-6 fatty acids to omeg a-3s, to those of wildtype mice. Both groups of animals were fed an omega-6-rich diet, which resulted in high circulating omega-3 levels in fat-1 mice. When the researchers subjected the mices neurons to either hypoxia or stretching, they fo und that cells from fat-1 mice showed less injury than wildtype cells rich in om ega-6 fatty acids. Similarly, fat-1 mice subjected to sciatic nerve injury recov ered sensation more quickly than their wildtype counterparts, leading the resear chers to hypothesize that higher endogenous levels of omega-3 fatty acids could have protective effects against nerve injury.
