A trip to the Magical Mountain
By: Julie Girard Its 3.00AM the morning of February 23, 2007 and Im in San Gerardo, the jumping-off point for the ascent of Mount Chirripo. Tossed and turned all night in anticipation of our 3.30 AM departure. After two months of physical training plus limiting my cocktail hour intake, the moment has finally arrived. Ten of us are about to embark on a three day, 15 kilometer trek to the top of Costa Ricas highest mountain located in the Talamanca range. We are led by Pablo Chespi Elizondo, a member of the San Vito Bird Club and the Asociacion Ornitologia de Costa Rica. Roy May, President of the AOCR, Cecilia Sansonetti from the SVBC as well as six other AOCR members round out our intrepid group. It will be the first trip for most of us and our anticipation is tinged with a nagging question as to whether we will be able to make it to the top. down to San Gerardo. The goal of our trip is twofold, firstly to experience such a rare adventure and secondly, to investigate the possibility of doing annual bird counts of the Chirripo trail in the future.

Sensational sunsets on top of the clouds. A Volcano Hummingbird feeding 6 inches from my ear, yes, really! Temperature variations ranging from almost-shorts weather to icicles, in a tropical country no less! The sense of isolation from the rest of the human race! My space is limited so suffice to say, thanks to my climbing companions, a great group of people, for sharing this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Un viaje a la Montaa Mgica

Cielos de un azul increble atravesando por la copa de unos robles torcidos que parecen unos hombres viejos con la barba gris. Vistas irresistibles por encima de la lnea de los rboles de una meseta cubierta de lagunas. Una vegetacin abundante, una vista rara y nica de flores minsculas y hojas gruesas. Una formacin de rocas increble. Una puesta del sol sensacional por encima de las nubes. Gerardo de Rivas, un pueblo ubicado a los 1475 metros de altura. El refugio para la noche, que debe ser alcanzado el primer da, est ubicado a los 3690 metros. Se prev un largo y arduo da. La meta final la cima del Chirrip- a los 4175 metros est prevista para la maana del segundo da. Al tercer da vamos a regresar a San Gerardo.
