Crime Report
2004-2005

based on the Cognito crime data management system

Report 1, August, 2005
Analysing key trends by processing
over 3,000 ATM recorded crime incidents

A crime data management system from GASA

Preface
Preface
This is the Global ATM Security Alliance's first ATM crime report generated from its own
Cognito crime data management system. I would like to thank the South African Fraud
Prevention Services, and in particular, Pat Cunningham and Riaan Liebenberg, for a top
quality and professional management of Cognito on behalf of GASA. I would also like to thank
APACS, BBA, Fair Isaac, Shell International, LINK Interchange Network and American Special
Risk for contributing crime data to Cognito.
Please send constructive feedback or questions regarding the report to me at
mike@atmia.com.
A data management system like Cognito converts information into intelligence. The latter is
strategically useful. At least three trends are noteworthy from this first ATM crime report.

! The majority of ATM crimes occur between 6pm and 9pm - this period is therefore a
higher risk time for ATMs
! Recent ATM and POS crimes occur at higher-than-average rates in the following
locations: bank branches/bank lobbies and petrol forecourts
! Electronic ATM crimes, especially skimming, easily outweigh the numbers of physical
attacks on ATMs; as a consequence, countering skimming should be a major part of any
current ATM security strategy and programme
