1. (a) What is the dierence between quick return motion of crank and slotted lever type and that of whit worth type? (b) Find the distance between the xed centers of a Whitworth quick return motion mechanism if the length of driving link is 40mm, return stroke is 150mm and time ratio of cutting to return stroke is 2. (a) State and Explain Kennedys theorem as applicable to instantaneous center of rotation of three bodies. (b) In the mechanism shown in Figure 3. the crank OA makes 400rpm in the counter clockwise direction. Find i. angular velocity of the link BA and ii. velocity of the slider at A. Deduce the relationship connecting the inclinations of the front stub axles to the rear axle, the distance between the pivot centers for the front axles and wheelbase of the car. (b) A Hookes joint connects a shaft running at a uniform speed of 1200 rpm to a second shaft, the angle between their axes being 20 degrees. Find the velocity and acceleration of the driven shaft at the instant when the fork of the driving shaft has turned through an angle of 15o from the plane containing the shaft axes. (b) Construct the prole of a disk cam with translating at follower with the following data: Rise 3 cm with harmonic motion in 1800 of cam rotation, return with parabolic motion in 1500 of cam rotation and then dwell. The base circle diameter is 15 cm. Determine the width of follower face allowing 0.75 cm clearance. The cam rotates in a counterclockwise direction. Check the possibility for a cusp on the cam. [16] 6. (a) What is higher pair? How gears are classied? (b) Two gears in mesh have a module of 10mm and a pressure angle of 250 . The pinion has 20 teeth and the gear has 52. The addendum on both the gears is equal to one module. Determine i. The number of pairs of teeth in contact. ii. The angles of action of the pinion and the wheel. iii. The ratio of the sliding velocity to the rolling velocity at the pitch point and at the beginning and end of engagement. [16] 7. A shaft running at 200rpm carries a pulley 1.25m diameter which drives a dynamo at 1200rpm by means of a belt 6mm thick. Allowing for the thickness of the belt and a slip of 4%, nd the size of the dynamo pulley and width of belt. Find also the power required if ratio of belt tensions is 2.5. Maximum tension in the belt is not to exceed 3 MPa. [16] 8. (a) Dierentiate between simple a compound gear trains. (b) Figure 8b shows a port indicator for a twin-screw ship. It is found that the pointer P remains stationary if the propellers run at the same speed and drive the gears C and D in the same direction through equal gears A and B. If the number of teeth on G and F are 24 and 50 respectively, nd the ratio of the number of teeth on C to that on D. What will be the speed of the pointer if B runs at 5% faster than A and if the speed of C is 100rpm? [16]

(b) The following data relate to a cam prole in which the follower moves with uniform acceleration and deceleration during ascent and descent. Minimum radius of cam = 25mm, Roller diameter = 7.5mm, Lift = 28mm, Oset of follower axis = 12mm towards right, Angle of ascent = 600 , Angle of descent = 900 , Angle of dwell between ascent and descent = 450 , Speed of the cam = 200 rpm. Draw the prole of the cam and determine the maximum velocity and the uniform acceleration of the follower during the outstroke and the return stroke. [16] 6. (b) Two meshing spur gears with 200 pressure angle have a module of 4mm. The centre distance is 220mm and the number of teeth on the pinion 40. To what value should the centre distance be increased so that the pressure angle is [16] increased to 220 ? 7. The grooves on the pulleys of a multiple rope drive have an angle of 500 and accommodate ropes of 22mm diameter having a mass of 0.8kg per meter length for which a safe operating tension 1200N has been laid down. The two pulleys are of equal size. The drive is designed for maximum power conditions. Speed of both the pulleys is 180rpm. Assuming coecient of friction as 0.25, determine the diameters of the pulleys and the number of ropes when the power transmitted is 150kW. [16] 8. (a) Explain about Epicyclic gear train.

(b) In the epicyclic gear train shown in gure 8b, a gear C which has teeth cut internally and externally is free to rotate on an arm driven by shaft S1 . It meshes externally with the casting D and internally with the pinion B. The gears have the following number of teeth: TB = 24, TC = 32 and 40, TD = 48 Find the velocity ratio between i. S1 and S2 when D is xed. ii. S1 and D when S2 is xed. [16]

(a) State and derive law of gearing.

(b) Following data relate to two meshing involute gears: Number of teeth on the gear wheel = 60, Pressure angle = 200 , Gear ratio = 1.5, Speed of the gear wheel = 100rpm, module = 8mm. The addendum on each wheel is such that the path of approach and the path of recess on each side are 40% of the maximum possible length each. Determine the addendum for the pinion and the gear and the length of the arc of contact. [16] 7. A Flat belt is required to transmit 20kW from a pulley 1.5m diameter running at 300rpm. The angle of contact between the belt and the pulley is 1600 and the coecient of friction is 0.25. The safe working stress for the belt material is 3MPa. The thickness of belt is 6mm and its density is 1100kg/m3 . Find the width of the belt required. [16] 8. Figure 8 shows an epicyclic gear train arrangement. Wheel E is a xed wheel and wheels C and D are integrally cast, and mounted on one pin. If the arm A makes one revolution/sec. counter-clockwise, determine the speed and the direction of rotation of wheels B and F. [16]

3. In a four-link mechanism, the dimensions of the links are as under AB = 50 mm, BC = 66mm, CD =56 mm, and AD =100mm. At the instant when angle DAB = 450 , the link AB has an angular velocity of 9 rad/s in the counter-clockwise direction. (a) The ratio between the width of the front axle and that of the wheelbase of a steering mechanism is 0.44. (b) Determine the maximum permissible angle between the shaft axes of a universal joint if the driving shaft rotates at 800 rpm and the total uctuation of speed does not exceed 60 rpm. Also nd the maximum and the minimum speeds of the driven shaft. (c) What is fundamental equation of steering gears? Explain Ackermann steering gear with a neat sketch. Explain why it is widely used? (b) A tangent cam with a base circle diameter of 50mm operates a roller follower 20mm in diameter. The line of stroke of the roller follower passes through the axis of the cam. The angle between the tangential faces of the cam is 600 , speed of the cam shaft 200 rpm and the lift of the follower 15mm. Calculate, i. The main dimensions of the cam. ii.
