DESCRIPTION OF SITE AND LEARNERS

Think of a small county that has about ten little restaurants, two red lights, and two caution lights. Now you get a little vision of my county- Pike. I work at the Pike County Primary School. I teach computers to children from the ages of four years old to about eight years old. The community of our school has very high parent support- due to the small community based county foundation. When looking at the county as a whole- the median income for a household in the county was $44,370, and about 7% of families are below the poverty line. The largest employer in the county is the Pike County School District. There are four other schools in Pike County. Those schools are the Pike County Elementary School, Pike County Middle School, and Pike County High School. My school, the Pike County Primary School has a total of 854 students between the four grades. We have 12 classes of each grade with the exception of Pre-K, which only has 7 classes. We have a high ratio of white students weighing 90% of the population of the school. 44% of our students are classified as economically disadvantaged. We have 54 certified teachers and 3 administrators, 1 counselor, and 29 staff members. Our schools self-importance is known for their creative, dedicated, close bound teachers. Our school has limited funds, and it seems as if the school is sometimes run by fundraisers. We do not receive much Title I funds, so technology has halted in the past 5 years. The Pike County Media Center is an essential feature for the Pike County Primary School. The school has a very high-energy Media Specialist which gives the Media Center an added flair! The Media Center is the second thing parents, students, and teachers alike all pass as they enter the Pike County Primary School. Our school does not subscribe to a literary criticism database; however, if we take inventory of the technology goodies in our library we find that, the Pike County Primary Media Center has 2 computer labs each with a built in Smartboard. There are 5 computers in the main part of the library that are for the Accelerated Reader program and looking up books on Destiny. There are two projectors, one mobile Smartboard, 8 TV/DVDPlayers, 15 Digital Cameras, 5 Flips, 4 Kindles, and 2 mobile laptops. Goodies are not limited to hardware in the world of technology; our library has very useful programs or accessible resources that should be mentioned. Destiny(Library Collection), FastForward (math program), Education City

( Reading/Math), Web based Accelerated Reader, and a few other software programs like STAR reading and Math and Reading Blaster, MAP testing, Galileo, United Steaming etc Being that I have chosen a second grade standard as my topic area, I will go into more depth and detail about this group of students and faculty. There are 247 students in the entire second grade. Of these 247, there 2 ESOL, and 3 special needs students. The reading levels of these students are much diversified. According to our national scores on a CDA (computer adaptive testing) program we are included with -we rank 57% on the nation with 99% being the top. I will be primarily using this compiled data to use as my learning analysis. We have students who rank 99% and go all the way to the 1% factor. The software provided by NWEA gives us MAP testing and ranks us with the nation. This data specifies Lexile Scores as well as many other areas of need and gives our school a very detailed learning analysis of each student individually, each grade, our school as a whole, as well as our district data when the Elementary School data is added to the report. Taking this data, we have grouped our children into tiers. All of of Tier 3 students (lowest) have access to a certified teacher that pulls them out of regular education classes and works with them on their weaknesses. These teachers are funded by Title I funds.

CURRICULUM REVIEW
When deciphering upon my standards for this unit of study, I should go into what the expected outcomes are for this age group. I picked two main standards to work with to eliminate perplexity of my collection development, to also ensure I have done a thorough job clarifying the standards, and to ensure I have appropriately allotted $4000.00 dollars. The following 2 standards were addressed:
Historical Understandings SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history. a. Identify the contributions made by these historic figures: James Oglethorpe, Tomochichi, and Mary Musgrove (founding of Georgia); Sequoyah (development of a Cherokee alphabet); Jackie Robinson (sports); Martin Luther King, Jr. (civil rights); Jimmy Carter (leadership and human rights). b. Describe how everyday life of these historical figures is similar to and different from everyday life in the present (food, clothing, homes, transportation, communication, recreation, rights, and freedoms). Geographic Understandings SS2G1 The student will locate major topographical features of Georgia and will describe how these features define Georgias surface.

a. Locate all the geographic regions of Georgia: Blue Ridge Mountains, Piedmont, Coastal Plain, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau. b. Locate the major rivers: Ocmulgee, Oconee, Altamaha, Savannah, St. Marys, Chattahoochee, and Flint.

These standards will be addressed and elaborated by utilizing many components of the library. a. Digital Video on web and DVD b. Fiction Books i. Leveled-readers c. Non-Fiction Books i. Reference Books ii.Biographies d. Software and Online Programs i. Google Earth ii.Education City iii.Microsoft Office Suite e. Assessment Software/Programs i. MAP Testing ii.AR Testing f. E-books g. Teacher Management Tools i. Education City ii.NWEA Reporting Suite h. Virtual and Non-virtual Maps Both standards will address Georgia. Georgia is the main focus of second grade students. Before students enter third grade they are expected to know about certain Georgia History and the surface that Georgia exhibits. These two standards will be my key components in this collection development plan. My main focus- of course, will be our lovely state of Georgia. I expect my students to understand the standards with a very broad scope of understanding through many types of mediums. I do not expect my students to learn any of this through rote. All strategies used in these unit will be constructivist based learning. We will explore maps, read about historical figures, look up pictures, read and understand why the surface of Georgia is separated into sections- look at these sections through a virtual field trip, discover their culture differences from then to now, use textbooks to obtain a better understanding of all the above, and through these tasks- students will be able to identify key figures in Georgia History along with the roles they played throughout history, locate and label the different part of Georgias surface, locate and label the names of rivers in Georgia, as well as understand the difference of each surface, each river, and each person. Assessments will include formal and informal types: observation, written tests, computer assessments, and comprehension tests.

COLLECTION REVIEW
Upon entering the PCPS Media Center, I first went to Destiny and looked up what information was available. When going through the collection for the standards I choose it is important to mention our curriculum. The responsibilities for our collection lie in the hands of our Media Committee. The Committee consists of an administrator, the Media Specialist and a teacher from each grade level, as well as our literacy coach. This committee decides what our collection should hold. The entire curriculum is based solely off of the Georgia Performance Standards, and those standards are what their selections are based from. The policies that are put into place are then approved by the board. When digging through our collection, I found it very easy. Our library is laid out user-friendly so everything was easily accessible and tables are in all the right spots for getting down to work. After a hour of gathering and searching all the correct spots and keywords through Destiny, I found a total of 36 resources. The resources consisted of fiction books, non-fiction books , reference books, magazines, and videos. I made a chart to show the amount of my particular search in more visual way.

The next chart weighs the library as a whole. You can note the differences and the similiarities if the two.

Upon my search, I loved going through our reference section. However the reason I liked going through the reference section is because everything looked so untouched and new. Nothing was out of order! In actuality this is not a good thing. It meant that the faculty, staff and students were not using the reference section. All the non-fiction books I found were mainly from the Easy section. They had been checked out quite often so wear was very visible. The non-fiction books I found had some wear but not nearly comparable to the non-fiction. Another revelation I found upon my journey was that all books from non-fiction and fiction were AR books with the exception of 2. I found that information worthy- due to the assessment addition of my unit of study. According to data

of our school as a whole, our lowest goal in reading compared to the nation was comprehension, On another note, we were very high in phonics. I will focus some of my unit towards comprehension due to this data. I will also look for appealing information to lead the students be engaged in the standards addressed.

BUDGET SUMMARY
When given $4000.00 to spend on a unit of study, lots of consideration should be put in place. I found out $4000.00 is actually a lot of funds when considering informational material. I considered these areas when looking for materials: Is the age and developmental level appropriate? Is the information current and correct? Is is biased of opionions based on our policies? Does it coicide with our schools philosphy and curriculum? Are there any reviews or rewards to support the book? Is it attractive and appealing to more to the students? I looked for a varied amount of materials, in hopes that if a class did a unit on these particular standards they will be engaged with an array of mediums. In todays time learners are more animated, and seem to enjoy and thrive more from a constructivist style of teaching. I will spend some of the funds on non fiction books, fiction books, reference books, software, online programs, and an artistic, appealing map. I will separate my budget into areas where I spent the funds. These places included: Amazon- My focus lied mostly with nonfiction and references. TitleWave- My focus was on the individuals in the standard. Videos were purchased here..
a. Historical Understandings SS2H1 The student will read about and describe the lives of historical figures in Georgia history Scholastic- focused on pretty picture books with high awards to lure children into checking out the pretty knowledgeable book.

Peachtree Publishers- filler for appealing books to charm to student to check out books and enjoy learning standard.

Software and Programs- Education City and Study Island ( teacher management tools included for assessment) I think that teacher management tools are a great asset for showing a formal way of observation- performed in a medium that students are engaged in, can work independantly, therefore, more data can be compiled on each student- which lead to success of standards addressed. I spent a little more funds here, and to elaborate on this choice I considered and justified funds on reasons: a. Teacher Management Tools- web based and instant b. Students work independantly c. Diffrenetation is similar and more accurate d. More data can be easily compiled and printed for parents and teachers. e. Higher success rate on standards f. Student- Centered

Below, is a list of material below, organized by purchase place of business. I have comiled a caried collection of ooks for the Georgia aspect of the second grade stansdards. I believe students will find the material exciting, varied and appealing. I haved created a Personal Learning Network. The blogs and feeds on my site are filled with exciting changes and informative lessons in Education. The link is http://www.netvibes.com/angienix#General
