Just to clarify, there is a difference between a check that "bounces" and a check that doesn't "clear." However, they are often related. A check that bounces means that the bank of the person who wrote the check refuse to transfer the funds to the person attempting to cash or deposit the check. Most often this occurs because the issuer of the check doesn't have enough money in his/her checking account to pay the amount of the check. Sometimes it can also occur because the person who wrote the check "cancels" the check. (To do this you must go to your bank and sign a stoppayment order). Checks can also bounce if the bank doesn't believe the check is authentic or there is a question about the amount of the check or if the check hasn't been properly written, endorsed, and/or authorized. Typically, when someone says a check "didn't clear," they are referring to an electronic check verification system. Many businesses and merchants use an electronic scanning system to read the account number of a check and then cross-reference that account number with a database of checking accounts that have outstanding checks that have bounced. For example, if I have recently written a couple of checks that have bounced and then I attempt to purchase some items at the grocery store, the cashier might run my check through a check-scanning machine. It will read my account number and suggest that the cashier refuse my check because it has detected a high-probability that this check will bounce.
Account Closed
A check, which you issued to a company or person, the payee, was cashed by the payee. The payee's bank paid out the money and then sent the check to your bank for reimbursement. However, between the time you issued the check and the time the payee cashed the check, your account was closed. Your bank returns -"bounces" -- the check back to the payee's bank, stating that the account no longer exists.
You issue a check to a company or person, and instead of dating the check the day you issue it, you write a future date. The payee takes that check to his bank, before the date you wrote on the face of the check. The payee's bank should decline to cash the check. The check is not valid, until the date which is written. Sometimes a payee's bank will pay the check, regardless of the future date. The payee's bank then sends that check to your bank, and your bank, seeing the future date, bounces the check back to the payee's bank.
Unsigned Check
Sometimes, people forget to sign checks, before mailing them. A check must bear the legal signature of the maker, who is the person authorized to sign checks for that particular bank account. An unsigned check is not a valid negotiable instrument. The payee's bank should decline to accept it. The payee can return the check to you for signature. The payee may then take the signed check back to the her bank to cash, or to deposit it.
NSF Funds
"NSF" is an abbreviation meaning "not sufficient funds." A check you issued is presented to your bank for payment, but the amount of the check is greater than the amount of money in your account. Insufficient funds in your account forces your bank to bounce your check and to decline payment. Your bank will add an extra service charge to your account for a bounced NSF check.
Those examples mentioned are common causes for bouncing a check. If you made an honest mistake, correcting your error is relatively easy and uncomplicated. However, suppose you deliberately issued a check to pay for goods or services, and you knew the check was not valid and would be "bounced" by the bank. In that case, your incorrectly dating or neglecting to sign the check, closing your account, or, removing money from your account before a check posts for payment may not be considered harmless error. Those willful acts could give rise to significant penalties, including incarceration, should your act later be proved criminal in court.
