A love feast
It is Valentines Day a love feast. Couples know how to celebrate well on this day as they gift each other with chocolate, flowers and dinner out somewhere. Just try to get a reservation at the last minute. But look beyond Valentines Day as a couples only day. Look to it, if you will, as a love day mother and child, neighbor to neighbor, friend to friend and even country to country. Look to it as a day to celebrate the reason we are on this planet to love. Each year, a friend of mine gathers a group of women together for lunch at our local general store. It is a lovely way for this group that includes women who are married, divorced, widows, never married, with or without partners. We celebrate friendship on that day. Another friend who owns the local tea shop hosts high tea on the Sunday before Valentines Day. The participants include couples, singles it matters not. We are there to celebrate Valentines Day and enjoy high tea. I am certain there are many Valentine events that are not limited to couples because, in spite of all the florist and restaurant owners who capitalize on this day by advertising it for couples, it is a day to celebrate love in all of its packages. So, consider who it is who means a great deal to you or consider someone who might be alone and use this day to reach out, to express love. It can be fun. Find a recipe for cookies that can be cut into heart shapes, frosted and enjoyed by your family or a friend. After waiting nearly 60 years, Korean War veteran David Masiakowski received the Purple Heart in a formal ceremony last Wednesday at Milestone Senior Living in Eagle River. Pfc. Masiakowski, 81, whose eye was injured by shrapnel during combat in 1952, originally was given the award informally during his recovery in a hospital bed. While reviewing benefits paperwork with Masiakowskis daughter, Tricia Scarlato, Vilas County Veterans Service Officer Scott Jensen discovered there was no military record of Masiakowski receiving the award. He shed blood for his country, said Jensen. Therefore, we submitted a correction for military records and he received a new discharge certificate amended with the award of the Purple Heart. After receiving the certificate, Scarlato organized a surprise ceremony for Masiakowski, whose shock was evident

as he descended from the second floor of the senior living facility to a crowded room of attendees. Following a formal presentation of the Purple Heart award to her father, Scarlato thanked the ceremony guests.
My father gave a lot to his family and he gave a lot to his country, she said. I thank you so much for being here today and being a part of my fathers ceremony, because hes so deserving of this. Masiakowski, whose sur-
prise was still apparent after the service, said he appreciated the award, its observance and the ceremony guests. Its quite an honor, he said. The ceremony was really great, and Im surprised at the turnout.

HOOPS FOR HEART Northland Pines Middle School physical education classes took part in Hoops for Heart Feb. 910, participating in drills and games, including a three-point competition (right). Prior to the event, students were encouraged to seek donations for the American Heart Association which sponsors the event. Students also learned ways to care for their heart and why exercise and eating right will help them live longer. I feel great! Except right after our workouts (sore), I also have lots more energy. I wish it was summer so I could be working in my yard and garden. It will be here soon enough.
I feel much more energetic than before. I feel stronger and I can do exercises I couldnt do in the first and second weeks. I also find that I fall asleep right away instead of lying awake for hours. When this is over, Im making exercise a part of my daily life. I love going to the YMCA!
Already at the halfway point? No, I havent noticed more energy. Ive been working out hard and that helps make me tired. In regard to feeling better, I believe the exercises are helping my back issues. I feel good about the progress Im making in the gym, even if slow.
I have more energy and feel better than I did six weeks ago. Can do more during the workouts and last longer than I did five weeks ago. I think I have improved overall, in the gym and at home/work. Halfway through this challenge, I have a lot more energy, a lot more focus and just feel better overall. This helps keep me motivated to keep exercising and enjoy healthy eating!
At this point my pants are fitting very comfortably, I can look in the mirror and say to myself you are doing this and you can keep doing this! I get up for work around 5 to 5:30 a.m. and I spring right out of bed. I sleep like a baby most nights unless we worked out super hard and I am a little sore. Overall, I feel fresh, happy and full of life!
This week the group worked so very hard! We are at a level of training far beyond what I initially expected at this point. The groups weight loss, overall, was disappointing considering how hard everyone worked and how often everyone exercises. The important part is to not lose sight of the mission. Keep your chin up and forgive past indiscretions. Put it behind you and move on. Almost everyone improved their mile-run time! Keep focus on those positive aspects of your performance and keep going!

Do you ever feel like youre literally working your tail off, but dont see results on the scale? There are many reasons for this: water retention, lean body mass gain (i.e., you gain muscle) and bologna. Yes. Bologna. I want to talk about accountability. Sticking to a calorie-restricted diet is very difficult and its easy to lie about it to others, and to yourself. Keep an eating journal. You dont have to share it with anyone. Keep it to yourself because thats who youre doing this for. Dont look at the journal as temporary. Look at it as accounting for what youre really consuming and use it as a tool to adjust your eating habits permanently. Think of it like getting an education. Dont take the course, study and pass the test and never plan on using what you learned. Commit to making the permanent change in your habits. The first step is understanding the obstacles. Account for what your obstacles may really be. Julia John

Two area registered nurses have partnered their businesses and are working together to provide foot and nail care services. Happy Feet by June is a service provided by June Wedell RN, Certified Foot Care Nurse (CFCN); and InHome Foot and Nail Care is a service operated by Carol L. Miles RN, BSN, both of Eagle River. Services are offered in a clinic setting or home visits and provide foot assessment; hygienic skin and nail care, including trimming, thinning and filing; removal of callous; application of soothing moisturizer; patient education and referral to podiatrist, when indicated, and foot bath available in-home service only; and wellness checks and medication setups are available. The goals of nursing care and patient education are early detection of foot and nail problems; maintenance of skin and nail integrity; and enhancement of patient selfcare and monitoring skills to prevent thermal, mechanical and chemical injuries to feet. Both nurses are independent contractors and will offer foot and nail care clinics in downtown Eagle River by appointment only. Home visits are available in Eagle River, Three Lakes, St. Germain, Sayner, Phelps and Conover. Private visits in senior housing, assisted living and extended-care homes to above communities and Rhinelander also are available. Wisconsin native Wedell was born in Milwaukee and raised in Calhoun and Mequon. She has been married to Al Wedell for five years and lives in town of Washington. Peter and Diane Bugni of Eagle River announce the engagement of their daughter, Katie, to Craig Tomaszewski, the son of Judy Tomaszewski of Lake Tomahawk and the late Don Tomaszewski. Both the bride-elect and prospective groom are 2004 graduates of Northland Pines High School. The bride-elect graduated from UW-Milwaukee in 2010 and earned a masters degree in occupational therapy. She is employed as a pediatric occupational therapist in West Bend and Mequon. The prospective groom earned his bachelors degree in wildlife management and biology from UW-Stevens Point in 2008. He is currently completing his doctorate in
in the State of Wisconsin, she served as a nurse provider at an outpatient Bush dispensary in Zambia, Central Africa. She moved to the North Woods as a full-time resident in 1985. Her interest in foot care was sparked by a fellow member of Senior Eagle River Volunteer Enterprise at Kalmar Senior Center when they lost their regular foot care nurse provider. She attended a foot and nail care course through UWEau Claires continuing education in June of 2010. She became a CFCN in November 2010 and began serving seniors at Kalmar in February 2011. She is currently involved in Partners in Forestry and Northwoods Land Trust and is a member of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle River.
She is a committee member of special ministries of Christ Evangelical and Vilas County Commission on Aging. She provides foot and nail care at her clinic location on Wall Street in downtown Eagle River. Miles hometown Wisconsin Dells. She attended St. Lukes School of Nursing in Racine and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Oshkosh. She married and raised five children. She became an Arizona resident for 20 years, returned to Wisconsin in 2001 and moved to the North Woods in 2003. Along with her husband, Tommy, she served as a Nurse Provider in Cambodian Refugee Camp Clinic in Thailand and Christian Missionary for one year and taught nurses in former Saigon, Vietnam. She co-founded Vital Links
for Humanity Inc., a non-profit Christian organization in 1999, and led medical teams to Vietnam, a Navajo Reservation and Hurricane Katrina. She attended UW-Green Bay and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing in 2006 and foot and nail care for nurses courses at UW-Eau Claires continuing education program in October 2011. She currently serves as a volunteer for Vilas County Commission on Aging and provides in-home foot and nail care and is available at a clinic located in Eagle River. CALL TO ORDER: Vilas County Board Chairman Stephen Favorite called the assembly to order at 9:00 A.M. and instructed the Clerk to read aloud and insert into the minutes the following: A public meeting notice was given to the public by posting on the bulletin boards in the hall by the main entrance to the Vilas County Courthouse, Olson Memorial Library and Eagle River City Hall. All media outlets and members of the public requesting notification of this meeting were notified on January 20, 2012 more than twenty-four hours prior to the meeting. The Clerk requested that all present silence their cell phones and pagers for the duration of the meeting. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: The Chairman asked all in attendance to stand for the Pledge of Allegiance. De Bruyne reported on Communication Committee efforts to resolve Fire & EMS dispatch/paging issues. He recognized Sheriffs Dept. Lt. Gary Peske, who presented a preliminary plan offering solutions to the problems. M. Platner commented on a recent article in the Wisconsin Counties concerning the UW Extension system. She also updated the Board regarding UW Extension Dept. vacancies. J. Behling reported that the Public Health Dept. would soon move into offsite leased office space. An open house of that facility is being planned. E. Teichmiller reported that end of year public donations helped mitigate funding cuts experienced in October and November, allowing for the continuation of meal services provided to area seniors. He wishes to thank everybody that donated funds. He also reported that the Library Committee disbursed 2012 aid to area library funds, along with annual funds provided to Northern Waters Library Service.
