About IIPE Indian Institution of Plant Engineers (IIPE) is a premier professional institution dedicated to improve the utilization and efficiency of plants and to reduce operating costs. The main objective of IIPE is to induce professionalism in Plant Engineering and Management through its various initiatives. A lot of emphasis has been laid to get acquainted with and disseminate knowledge about various problems encountered in day-to-day operations. Solutions through deployment of new technologies and techniques are worked upon with the assistance of experts. With HQ at Chennai, IIPE was founded in 1971 and today has over 6000 members with 18 Chapters, 6 Centres and 9 Divisions spread all over the country. IIPE Conducts National and International seminars, conventions, Lecture Programs on current issues and plant visits. IIPE also offers Diploma / Graduation courses for practicing Plant Engineers and Advance Maintenance Management Program (AMMP) for Senior Managers. and Chhattisgarh. These mines are in operation for more than 4 decades. Total iron ore production by SAIL mines was 25 Million Tonnes during 2008-09. Kiriburu is a picturesque place in the Saranda Forest of Singhbhum (West) of Jharkhand. With a height of about 2800 ft, Kiriburu provides an opportunity to get a glimpse of natures bounty and a forest rich in bio-diversity. Kiriburu mine was commissioned by NMDC Ltd. in 1964 as an export development project. The project was implemented with Japanese collaboration and supplies from it were meant for Japanese steel plants. In 1978 the control of Kiriburu mines was passed on to SAIL. The mine has the distinction of having facilities to process ore in wet and dry streams simultaneously. The wet circuit is equipped for two stages of wet screening. The crushing Plant has two lines. Kiriburus principal linkage is with Bokaro Steel Plant. Rourkela Steel Plant also is a regular consumer of its products. Present finished product capacity of the mines is 4.25 Mtpa. Currently mine is under expansion, after which the capacity will be enhanced to 5.5 Mtpa. About the Seminar Theme: The Present meltdown is posing new challenges to

the Economists, Technologists, Engineers, Plant Managers, Personnel associated with Iron & Steel industry to convert it in to an opportunity to prepare for the next down cycle. Mining is the window to iron & steel industry. The present vibrant steel sector has gone in for a metamorphic shift in growth curve and accordingly iron & steel industry is undergoing profound structural changes presently overshadowed by the financial meltdown but a future outlook shining bright and this is the Indias next growth story. Iron making has now accepted the challenge of depleting reserves and stressing on the maximization of iron ore resources by utilizing low grade iron ore and upgrading them through stateof-art technology. The iron ore reserves in India are about 25 billion tonnes of which hematite ore is 58%, balance is magnetite. Although the reserves wise India has the 6th position, but per capita availability of iron ore (tonnes/person) i.e.22 is the lowest among the large iron ore bearing countries like Australia (2000) Kazakhstan (1267), Ukraine (1417) etc. Besides having a large reserve of iron ore containing average grade of around 58% Fe, the performance of blast furnaces has been at lower levels in comparison with the developed countries. Main reason behind this low productivity is presence of high level of impurities such as silica and alumina in the raw material contradicting to the blast furnace chemistry. The Iron Ore Beneficiation has taken an important position in aligning plant strategies. Leading professionals from the industry have decided to put in efforts to spot ways to make the process more energy efficient, aiming at zero waste management for sustainable development which is synonymous with the concern for environment along with its social and economic goals. Today, with metal companies being freely permitted to import rich ores at low tariffs, mining these lean ores makes bigger challenge to have an economic sense, in order to effectively utilize & conserve the resource. These issues need a detailed discussion Objectives of the seminar There is tremendous potential for growth in the Iron & Steel industry in India as per capita consumption of steel is much lower than the world average. Iron ore being major mineral plays a vital role for the success of Indian Steel industry in the globally competitive environment. Innovative cost effective methods of beneficiation, generation of minimum waste for maintaining the healthy environment are some of the important areas in the growing steel industry. All these prove as positive stimuli for the process engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, Industrial engineering and the allied industry. The seminar will provide platform to share the success stories and actions being taken in this direction and to evolve strategies for further improvement. The Seminar offers a unique opportunity to various plant managers, professionals & practitioners, mining experts, technology providers for iron ore processing, manufacturers of processing plant in the Iron and steel industry etc. to gain practical insights into and to share and debate new ideas, issues and future directions on utilization of low grade iron/lean ore for making Indian iron & steel Industry more productive. This seminar is set to provide a platform to the delegates for a comprehensive understanding, mind change for deeper insight into the developments, growth and direction in area of iron ore beneficiation. Coverage: This seminar has been designed to cover the framework for management of iron ore mines with low grade iron ore as

input to steel plants through effective adoption of technology advancements in process improvement, technology upgradation leading to effective utilistation of low grade iron ore. Present Practices in India and Abroad: Current practices of beneficiation of iron ores in India vis-vis world scenario. The best practices of effective utilization of iron ores. Benchmarking strategy. initiatives against industry leaders'

Identifying the challenges of beneficiation & their solutions. Solutions to low grade ore and slimes : Setting and adhering to standard operating practices and bench marks. Strategies for utilization of low grade ores. To set targets for utilizing low grade ores. To target for zero waste managment either by its reduction during production cycle and/or recycling to a useful input. To identify energy efficient ways for gainful utilization of low grade iron ores. To find ways and means for revolution of Green Productivity (GP) in iron ore mines to promote application of appropriate productivity and environmental management tools, techniques and technologies. Business Opportunities in iron ore beneficiation: Preliminary evaluation of order of investment and running cost of implementation of a few feasible technologies. Identification of agencies (like ancillary units) for implementation of the projects, their names, locations, present product ranges Development of plan for Low Grade Ore Utilization in Iron and Steel Plants Technology development efforts required to be carried out with special context to resource maximisation. Culture for Zero Wastes: Setting and adhering to standard operating procedures and bench marks. Employees Awareness and Involvement for zero waste management. Low grade ore related ecological problems and their solution. Success Stories in Effectively using Low grade iron Ores to a useable product: Besides the learning zones listed above this seminar provides an opportunity to the professionals from industry, research and development, vendors, Government department, academics and experts from the related fields to present papers, make presentation on lesser known pragmatic concepts, case studies for focusing on achievements, creative solutions.

Beneficiaries of the seminar The program has been designed to cover economic, technical and professional aspects of beneficiation of iron ore in Iron and Steel industry and conservation of resources, advancement and applied research in the associated fields, key personnel, policy makers, decision makers, senior and middle level executives, consultants and vendors should attend this program.
