1. Introduction The GMDSS Mass Charger Alarm Interface is used for monitoring the accumulator battery and Mass charger of the reserve supply backup arrangement for the radio installations. Battery voltage and current are displayed on the digital panel meter, visual and audible failure alarms are set according to the regulations of the I.M.O. The Mass GMDSS Interface is intended for installations with one battery bank and one Mass charger, in case two chargers are required Mastervolt advises two GMDSS interfaces to install. The panel contains separate alarm indicators for indication of AC failure, charger failure and low and high battery alarm. The display scrolls the Volts, Amps and Charger Status automatically. The panel is equipped with three potential free change over contacts to make a link to the ships global alarm system. The panel is standard equipped with an external 5V/50mA unregulated power supply for practical integration with the ships global alarm system. The panel does have the possibility to drive direct external indicators(led), buzzer and global mute switch,( alarm accept ) directly. The Panel includes backlight, mute, buzzer and test functions. The display scrolls to all the required functions automatically. The Mass charger alarm interface can be mounted into the Mass Charger enclosure or as remote panel. According to the regulations of GMDSS systems the panel must be installed at a position which is visible from where the ship is normally navigated. The panel must be connected to a DC voltage supply of 8 to 32 volt. (Normally the +24V DC from the accumulator battery) The panel should be connected with a 6 pole telephone RJ45 reverse connected cable to the digital Qrs232 output of the charger. Due to the wide input power range, no backup power is required. The unit will still be powered until the battery voltage drops below the 8V. For accurate current measurement the panel should be connected with a six pole twisted cable to the Mastervolt 500A/50mV shunt which is normally mounted close to the battery bank. The audible alarm and visual indicators , voltage and current meters are powered from an internal galvanic insulated DC/DC converter with operating range from 8V to 32 volt DC. The basic system set points such as low battery level of the Interface will be stored into the EEprom memory of the Mass charger, in case off loss of AC or DC power the GMDSS panel reads back the set points which are stored into the charger. In other words the panel will not loose the DC battery set point in case AC or DC power fails. Set-points like display setting and charge current % are lost and must be set again in case of DC power failure. The Mass Charger alarm interface does has a test alarm function, in this mode the alarms are step by step simulated. This function is helpfully for fast and easy installation, inspection and start up.

4. Instruction menu The two line display shows all kind of information on the status of the battery system and charger. The display can be set in three operation levels. Level 1 operating user menu Level 2 read out menu Level 3 installing menu, To enter level 3 the user should unlock the panel in function F0 Level 1 operating user menu (Main Menu) Display scroll: automatic trough the following lines Status charger => Charge current => Battery voltage & current Mute the alarm The alarm sound is muted by pressing the mute button. A new event will reactivate the alarm sound. The display will show the alarm status. To test the alarm indicator LEDs, buzzer and potential free contacts function F17 in menu level 3 should be activated. Level 2 read out setting menu (Read setting only) To enter this read out setting menu press select button while you are in the main menu for longer then 1 second. To scroll the function menu push the select button again. In level 2 is not possible to change any setting. You can only read To change a parameter of a function, pressing the mute button. In case the parameter does not change unlock the panel by level 3 in function F0. To return to level 1 wait 20 seconds or scroll to function RETURN and hold the select button until you return to level 1. Level 3 installing menu (Change setting) For changing several parameters the panel should be un-locked in function F0. Unlocking the unit: scroll to function F0 hold the select button until the lock is off. Scroll from F1 to F17 by the select button. Change a parameter up or down by the mute button, In case the mute button is hold the parameter goes up or down, to change up or down hold the Select button until the arrow changes of direction. To restore the factory setting of the charger Function F16 must be selected. The new charger/GMDSS setting will be save in the permanent memory of the charger. (Attention: only setting from F8 till F12 are saved in the charger) In case you return to level 1 (main menu) the setting are stored automatically. Note : the unit selects 12volt settings or 24v setting automatically. (24V setting are twice the 12V settings) Function menu

7. Wire by wire detail battery compartment The shunt is the current sensor for the GMDSS Interface Its value is 500A 50mV this rating means that when 500 Amps flows through it there is 50mVgenerated across it. The mV signal is translated into an Amps display in the meter. For example: A 50A load would generate 5mV across the shunt and would be displayed as -50 Amps. Caution: In the diagram below, the darker wires represent primary wiring and should be able to carry full battery load current. Select the correct diameter. Size appropriately!

8. Wire by detail Mass charger compartment The Mass charger communicates (based on the QRS232 protocol) with the GMDSS interface. Information on the status of the charger and AC-present will be send over to the GMDSS interface. The communication time between Charger and interface takes about 2 to 3 seconds. The 6 pole telephone cable should be reversed connected on the RJ45 Plugs. ( pin 1 becomes pin 6)
